A missile hit a train station where thousands of civilians went to flee in eastern Ukraine, killing at least 50 people and injuring dozens on Friday, Ukrainian authorities said, as the region braced for a major Russian offensive.

Photos from the scene showed bodies covered with tarps on the ground and the remnants of a rocket with the words “For the children” painted on it in Russian.

"There were many killed and injured here, there were ambulances, the police, fire engines. The cars were burning nearby. It was hell on earth.” Aleksander Kochura, Kramatork's administration press secretary officer, said on the scene.

This morning, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said no Ukrainian troops were at the station, while Pavlo Kyrylenko, governor of the Donetsk region described it as a deliberate attack.

Meanwhile, the Kremlin denied Russian involvement, saying the missiles said to have struck the station were used only by Ukraine's military and that Russia's armed forces had no targets assigned in Kramatorsk on Friday.
