Performance Notes:

It is worth noting John Stanley lost his sight at the age of two, but went on to both compose, conduct, and perform quite prolifically. This piece is from one of three volumes of ten “Voluntaries”—opuses 5, 6, and 7. This “Andante Largo” is essentially the middle movement of his “Voluntary V,” opus 6. It may well be Stanley’s most famous work, and is as often performed with a trumpet or trumpets as it is in its original solo form.
Care should be taken to play the dotted-eighth-sixteenth rhythms metrically, or if anything other than square, then erring on the side of double-dotting. The style is somewhat “martial,” but by keeping some length on the dotted-eighths, it is possible to phrase with some elegance and grace.
