Heavy Seas Cause Massive Ships To Bend In Order To Endure
Ship transportation has come a long way since the Titanic. It is now more stable and faster than ever, it can carry more and more weight but we still seem to be afraid of it, and it’s not without a solid reason. No matter how safe we claim ships to be, they are still slaves to the majestic force of the oceans. The dark blue waters are still as unpredictable as ever and it takes a lot of expertise to try and curb them a bit.
Nature is absolutely unpredictable. You can never be too sure what a single tiny movement might do to cause a shift in the whole ecosystem. You can’t predict an earthquake similar as to how you can not predict the weather. You can guess that it’s going to rain based on the ominous dark clouds, but you may never know if a wind sweeps in and blows them all away. The only thing we are certain of is that even a tiny movement of the water might cause a huge swell in the ocean. It would build up and build up, until it gains so much strength that it might turn lethal to the object it crashes against.
Mother Nature is a glorious thing. Just as she creates, she can also destroy her creations in the blink of an eye. That's why mankind has fought her intentions throughout history, creating better, stronger materials to withstand Mother Nature's wrath. We have come a long way, with houses that endure earthquakes and ships that bend to the seas!
The German naval fleet has a container ship called MSC BUSAN. Able to carry almost a whopping 90 metric tonnes, she is a beast. The crew took this footage while encountering some heavy waves out on the ocean. It requires some focus, but a few seconds into the video you can clearly see the body of the MSC BUSAN giving way to the will of nature, in order not to break! Incredible!
In all earnest, any massive seafaring ship worth its weight in salt is supposed to be designed to flex through rough waters. It is all in the math, really, as there are specialized engineers and architects that build these beasts for the seas, crunching the numbers to allow these vessels to twist and bend every which way in order to get their precious cargo from point A to point B. If it weren’t for these mathematics, the ships would literally snap in half under the pressure.
You may call it a compromise, because when a ship is built correctly, it will take a beating not by force, but by a calculated give and take.
