Raising Monarchs from Egg Laying Onward (Part 7)
This post we show the first caterpillar that hatched in our first post has made it to chrysalis (pupa). This is good news. Not out of the woods yet, but this is a very good sign we will be releasing a Monarch buttery. We also update the other caterpillars we have in the three other containers.

Raising Monarchs from Egg Laying Onward (Part 6)
It did not take long after the transfer to the plant that he has now entered his "J" position. This is a crucial time for him. Hopefully he is able to enter the chrysalis (pupa) stage. You can and we have lost them at this point so hopefully this little guy makes it.

Raising Monarchs from Egg Laying Onward (Part 4)
This post shows how quickly they grow. We added a fresh leaf and he went straight to chewing it up. This is the little guy from the first post so you can see how much he has progressed. He is almost ready to be put in the enclosure with a cut plant. Once we do this they require quite less monitoring as the plant folitage will last until they enter the chrysalis stage.

Raising Monarchs from Egg Laying Onward (Part 3)
This post we show the little guy has migrated off the yellowed leaf he was born on and has now started feasting on the new one put into the container. This will continue until he is big enough to add to a cut plant. The other egg shown in this post has also hatched and has started munching away and making poop.

Raising Monarchs from Egg Laying Onward (Part 2)
This post we are adding a fresh leaf for the little guy to feast on. Leaves tend to yellow after a few days (3-4) when not attached to the main stock, so for the health of your little guy you want to keep the foliage fresh until you can transfer him to a plant your have cut for him. Keeping him in the small container allows you to keep an eye on him until he is big enough to spot on a plant you have in a protective enclosure. Please stay tuned.

Raising Monarchs from Egg Laying Onward. (Part 1)
From our last post where we did a release of two butterflies, we were asked how we got to that point of release, so for the next few posts we will describe how urban dwellers can help increase a declining population on Monarchs.

Butterfly Release
We grow milk weed in our garden to conserve the Monarch butterfly. Once discovered as caterpillars, we isolate them from predators while they go through their metamorphosis and then we release them.
