I used to live in an LA neighborhood. I left my bike on the porch for a minute to answer the phone. This was back before the Internet and cellphones were a thing. I heard something on the porch and went to check on it. Two guys wererunning away with my bike, and it was a nice bike. I chased them and ended up in a neighborhood I've never been in, running hard and yelling expletives. When they were about 100yds in front of me, they just stopped and looked back at me. In that moment I had a physical reaction in my body that forced me to take a breath. Something forced me to stop and look around. Why are they looking back at me? I was about to risk my life for a bicycle in a fit of rage. I realized I was in a whole other world with different rules, and those guys knew it too. They turned to keep going and I turned back around the way I came. That visceral reaction has served me well in my career and the different countries I've been too. Situational awareness is critical to your self-defense, as is the ability to walk away.
