Krampus parade takes over Munich streets, delighting spectators
For the first time in two years, a parade of Krampuses took over the streets of Munich on Sunday.
Wearing sheepskins and equipped with wooden masks, bells and willow branches, the frightening folk figures made their way in packs through the city centre, with delighted spectators looking on.
“Just seeing the different variations of Krampus – it’s so fun. And the different sized bells and the anticipation of hearing them before you see them. It’s incredible,” said Alissa Shanow, who came all the way from Ohio to see the Krampus Run.
Krampus, a traditional figure from the Eastern Alps is a companion of St. Nicholas. He punishes the naughty children while St. Nicholas rewards the good children with presents.
The creepy masks donned by the Krampus actors are carved from lime, alder or Swiss stone pine wood and can weigh up to 10 kg.
Some 300 people from across the Alpine region participated in the parade, which has taken place in Munich since 2004.
