Muay Thai vs. Karate 1974 Showdown: Nongkhai vs. Monoe
Muay Thai vs. Karate: The clash between these two styles is legendary, with encounters in 1964 having ripple effects throughout the martial arts. But on July 16, 1974, at Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, we witnessed another epic clash between the two distinct fighting styles.
Representing Muay Thai, Thailand's own Nongkhai Sor. Prapatsorn stepped into the ring and across from him, hailing from Japan, was Karate champion Katsuhiro Monoe.
Style vs. Style matchups are always intriguing, and this one was no different, but with a dominant performance of skill Nongkhai Sor. Prapatsorn emerged victorious, winning by KO in just 1 minute and 35 seconds of the second round.

Schultz Choke - The Punishing Front Headlock Choke
Breakdown & Analysis of The Schultz Choke or Schultz Fron headlock position named after the legendary Dave Schultz. The submission can come on quickly, and even if it doesn't, it turns the front headlock into a punishing position that helps to open up go behinds, breakdowns and pins. The Schultz Choke also flows together nicely as an Anaconda Choke setup as it encourages your opponent to roll and pin themselves.

Arm Across Guillotine - The Seated Kata Gatame Study
Breakdown & Analysis on The Arm Across Guillotine, also known as The Seated Kata-Gatame, and used recently by Jack "The Joker" Hermanson to score multiple submission victories in Mixed Martial Arts.
Setup from the front headlock, the choke works with other submissions like the Anaconda, Darce and Arm-In Guillotine. While it will have you sitting back like a traditional guillotine choke for the finish, the finishing mechanics are more similar to a head and arm choke or Kata-Gatame, which is why it got the name Seated Kata-Gatame.
I study the other setups of the choke and the other transitions to the defence, including a sweep to the back and moving directly into an anaconda choke. But most interesting may be the finish from the mount, which I called the Assassin choke, taken from a wrestling move called the Assasin, also known as the Kata-Sankaku in Judo.

No-Gi Ezekiel Choke - Alexey Oleynik Breakdown #shorts
A Breakdown of the no-gi Ezekial chokes with a focus on "The Boa Constrictor" Alexey Oleynik. He has won over four decades of MMA competition, including a dozen Ezekiel chokes!
The Ezekiel choke comes from judo, called the Sode Guruma Jime, which means sleeve wheel constriction and is usually performed by grabbing the sleeve of the gi. It got its name in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu after Brazilian Judoka Ezequiel Paraguassú often used it.
In no-gi, it will essentially be set up as a front naked choke, with your arm behind the opponent's head and your bicep blocking the carotid artery on one side. Alexey will help expose the opponent's neck by using his chin to turn their face away. You then grab your own bicep on the other side and look to punch your fist underneath the opponent's chin to compress the carotid artery on the other side and inevitably some of their tracheae also.
It's a choke that can be hit from positons where not many other choking opportunities are available, like from inside someone's closed guard. Alexey Oleynik famously used it in the UFC while he was mounted.
A fun one to play around with!

Slick Trick Of A Karate Whip Kick - Nano Breakdown
A Nano Breakdown of a very tricky karate kick. It looks like it is thrown as a question mark kick, which can be deceptive enough when set up correctly, but the attacker actually holds on to his own foot temporarily before releasing it and landing the kick.
While requiring a fair bit of dexterity, grabbing the foot as he does would interrupt the timing of the kick and also possibly give it a bit of extra whip behind it.

100% Sweep - Study Of A Crankin' MMA & BJJ Sweep
The 100% sweep gets its name from Eddie Bravo in the 10th Planet System as he says that if the sweep is performed correctly it's going to work one hundred per cent of the time. In this breakdown, we look at the technique required to make that happen and how you can chain the 100% sweep together with other front headlock attacks such as the cow catcher and the crucifix neck crank.
You can find Eddie Bravo attempting to use it on Royrler Gracie in both their match ADCC and the rematch at Metamoris but in both cases, Royler was able to slip out due to flexible shoulders. But it has been a staple in the 10th Planet system with one of Eddie's black belts, Erwann Marshall, even earning the nickname "100%" due to his success with it.
Although if you do plan on using it the keys are really to monitor the position of the opponent's free arm and hooking one of their legs to control as this will determine what positions of control you can move to, such as the back of the truck, after you land the sweep.

Front Headlock Crucifix - Neck Crank Control To Pass Guard & Submit
The Crucifix Neck Crank is a brutal finishing submission that can be set up from the Cow Catcher as you transition to the Front Crucifix which is also known as the Full Stocks or Double Arm Bar position. I breakdown some of the entries and ways this powerful hold can be used to manipulate and break the posture of your opponent and then use it to land a takedown, sweep, pass the guard and submit them. Although you will find that this particular position and neck crank is a banned technique in a lot of grappling competitions so be careful!
The position is often called a Reverse full nelson, and I thought it was too when I first started looking at it, but this is technically incorrect as that is when you have two overhooks on the opponent and not two underhooks as we see here.

The Cow Catcher For Wrestling Pins & Jiu-Jitsu Submissions
The Cow Catcher is a powerful wrestling move used to takedown and pin an opponent from the front headlock position. But it is also versatile enough to be used as a throw, reversal and even as a submission in Jiu-Jitsu and of course you can find it well documented in Catch Wrestling where you can both pin and submit.
In the study we look at the various positions the Cow Catcher technique can be used and how it can be chained together with the cement mixer if the Cow Catcher is defended.
One thing I have learned is depending on the region this move can be called any number of names, from a Cement Job, Snake, Whip Over, Brands, Iowa, Pancake, Half Halch and Gator Bacon. But Chael Sonnen will insist that it is called a Death Grip...

The Octopus Guard in MMA - Sweep, Stand Up Or Attack The Back
A breakdown of The Octopus Guard & Half Octopus Guard, focusing on its use in MMA Grappling & Jiu-Jitsu. Eduardo Telles laid the groundwork for this interesting guard, that has been used by Khabib, Michael Bisping & BJ Penn and has worked against the legendary GSP on multiple occasions.
Although submission options do exist from the octopus guard, the main options that it has been used for are taking the back, sweeping and standing back up.
With wrestling up becoming more common in jiu-jitsu, the octopus guard may also see its application useful there as it can provide an entry into what Craig Jones has been calling "false half guard".

Helio Gracie vs. Kimura - 1951 Fight Colourised & Remastered #shorts
Helio Gracie vs. Masahiko Kimura - Colourised & Remastered. The legendary bout between Helio & Kimura took place at Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro on October 23, 1951.
Competing in a judo gi under a ruleset that Helio called the "jiu-jitsu rule". Kimuras initial plan was to knock out Helio Gracie with a throw and was able to hit an ouchi gari, harai goshi, uchi mata and ippon seoi nage but the softness of the mats prevented a knockout.
On the mat Kimura passed Helios guard into side control and secured a kesa gatame. Eventually, as Helio rolled and give up his back, Kimura followed and secured a yoko sankaku jime or side triangle choke. It was during this that Kimura applied enough pressure for Helios ear to begin bleeding and for him to lose consciousness but he regained it as Kimura moved to another dominant position.
Eventually, Kimura locked up a gyaku-ude-garami or Double Wrist-Lock and broke Helio Gracies arm, as Gracie refused to tap Kimura kept cranking on the broken arm until Carlos Gracie threw in the towel and entered the mat to tap out on Kimuras back for his brother.
Kimura was declared the winner, with the move used to break Helios arm now bearing his name in jiu-jitsu circles and the match lives on in history.
The footage was taken from multiple sources to try and get the best quality and has been colourised and remastered. The full footage of the fight wasn't available and was either never released, has been lost or doesn't exist.

Genki Sudo Highlight - Westside Tournament & Bonus [4K Ultra HD 60FPS]
My favourite Genki Sudo Highlight video of all time was when he was at the Westside Tournament, and the Neo Samurai put on a spectacular grappling performance. I must have watched this a thousand times back in the day, and so I have restored it to the best of my ability to 4K Ultra HD resolution with a 60FPS framerate. I have also included a bonus at the end of an interview excerpt with Chris Brennan from my podcast "The Sonny Brown Breakdown". Chris Brennan was the host of the tournament and is the referee you see in the video. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to ask him about what happened that day.
I have been getting into video restoration to help the process of my breakdowns, and I hope you enjoy this historical and classic piece of grappling history.
