Today I review a mic that uses the same capsule as the Neumann U47, the Microtech Gefell UMT70s. This is a multi pattern condenser mic with Omni, Cardioid, and Figure-8 patterns with a High Pass filter and -10dB pad. This mic offers a reserved lowend, forward upper mid range, and a tame and controlled top end. It does suffer from a pretty resonant body, so be careful not to bump it while recording and it also picks up quite a bit of ambient noise. If you are looking for a dynamic mic that does great at background noise rejection while offering a brighter top end to get more articulation and a reserved mid section, then this is great. This is an expensive mic, but it offers a powerful low-end without being muddy, a clear and detailed mid section without sound scooped, and an extended and open top-end without sounding over-boosted or artificial. This costs $120, has a great set of accessories, and offers a very modern sound meaning a weighty low end and a dominant top end which gives it a slight v-shape. Today I review one of the most versatile handheld mics I’ve ever tested, the Lewitt MTP 940 CM. This is a multi-polar pattern handheld condenser microphone with a 1” capsule. It also offers two pads and two high pass filter options. In the handheld condenser market, the self noise is pretty respectable, did a great job at off axis coloration, and did great rejecting background noise.
