Gigantic woodpecker captured by camera mounted by bird feeder
Pileated woodpeckers are the largest species of woodpecker in North America. They would be second to the ivory billed woodpecker, although sadly, it is now believed to be extinct. The pileated is a giant bird that feed on insects burrowed into rotting trees and logs. It uses its keen sense of hearing to detect grubs and beets beneath the wood. Once it locates its prey, it hammers with its powerful beak to uncover and devour the insects. They actually play a vital role in the health of many forests, keeping the population of destructive insects in check.
A pileated woodpecker can be heard for miles as it beats loudly on hollow trees to announce its presence and dominance to other woodpeckers. They are territorial and this display is meant to keep rivals from entering their feeding or breeding area.
A pileated woodpecker grows to an incredible 49cm in height (19inches). It is a heavy bird, weighing up to 300g (2/3 lb). They are also known to eat fruits and berries, including the berries of the poison ivy plant. They will also eat ants in large quantities when the colonies are found in dead trees.
The nest of the pileated is constructed by hammering out large holes in dead trees. The male makes a nest and this attracts a female where they will work together to raise their young. The nests are not used twice and the large cavities often become a shelter for other birds and woodland animals, such as owls. This also plays a beneficial role in the health of forests.
Pileated woodpeckers are a welcome sight at back yard bird feeders such as this one. They love suet cakes that are filled with nuts and seeds. Their large size and bright plumage make them a delightful sight for bird enthusiasts and photographers. This videographer placed a GoPro camera on a pole right beside the suet feeder in his back yard and he was fortunate enough to capture this large male paying a visit.
Providing food for local birds can make a great difference to their survival, especially when harsh conditions make it more difficult to find food.

Wagonload of puppies captures the hearts of veterinary technicians
Veterinary technicians have one of the most wonderful jobs imaginable. Their days are filled with visits from people with dogs, cats, and other beautiful pets. Anyone with a love for animals would be envious of those who enjoy such an occupation. And as fun as their typical days are, a visit from a new litter of puppies like these golden retrievers makes the day even better.
These vet techs at Sherbrooke Heights Animal Hospital in were thrilled to hear the the puppies from As Good As Gold breeders were coming for their checkups. Who can resist a bunch of fluffy puppies like these? The puppies are as energetic as they are adorable and keeping them all together is a feat. Their owner brought them to the clinic in a wagon that is perfect for the job.
The entire clinic was overjoyed at this wagon full of cuteness and they all gushed over them through the entire visit. They all received a clean bill of health and made their way to the door to go home. The techs all gathered around to see them off!

Hungry squirrel performs perfect 'Cookie Monster' imitation
Squirrels are among the cheekiest of all the creatures that we are likely to see at the back yard bird feeders. And as adorable and entertaining as they are, they often take more than their share of the food that we put out for our little feathered friends.
This squirrel is the boss of this feeder, commanding respect with his size and agility, chasing away all who would dare to land here and try to carry off a peanut. Even the blue jays wait their turn when he arrives and takes his position on the platform where the food is piled. But, despite his dominance and relaxed attitude, he eats in such a hurry that the shells of the peanuts fly and fall all around him. He nibbles like he is on a tight schedule to get at the nuts inside the shell. We cannot help but be reminded of that lovable character, Cookie Monster, on the timeless television show, Sesame Street. Cookie monster devoured his snacks with enthusiasm and a complete disregard for tidiness, just like this furry little fellow.
This back yard feeder in Millbrook, Ontario, Canada, was set up initially to provide the neighbourhood crows with a little help getting through the winter. A veterinarian and her family raised a family of orphans when their nest fell from the tree and they were abandoned by their parents. She supplemented their food after they were released and adopted by the wild crows in the area. Ten years later, the ones that relied on this family for help, still come back and occasionally call out a very human-like "hello", as they learned to do when they were being hand fed. Other crows frequent this feeder as well, along with song birds of all kinds.
Although the squirrels here are greedy enough to take a large share, there is always more than enough food for the furry animals, as well as the feathered ones.

Police officer cuddles a lion cub on the best call of his career
Dave loves his job as an Ontario Provincial Police officer. Every day provides an opportunity to help his community and make a difference in the lives of others. And most days it's a lot of fun too. Working in a smaller community, it's a very relaxed pace and his service's relationship with the public has always been good. This career also provides an opportunity to meet wonderful and interesting people. Some days, it can even be an opportunity to meet interesting animals.
Known for being an extreme animal lover, Dave received a call one day that was one of the most unusual and thrilling calls ever. A local resident was fostering a lion cub and the adorable cat would be living at her house for a few weeks while it received some special care. Dave was invited to meet the cub, which was a chance he could not resist.
When his shift was over, Dave made his way back to the station, taking a detour to attend the residence with this unusual house guest. He could not have been more thrilled as he was handed a very snuggly lion cub that was roughly 8 weeks old.
Aslan, the lion was a little ball of the softest fur imaginable. He looked and felt more like a stuffed toy than a real animal. He was deceptively muscular and solid, weighing more than it would appear, but he was all purrs and affection as Dave sat on the stairs and gave him all the attention he wanted.
Aslan laid down his head on Dave's arm and went right to sleep, purring happily. The smile on Dave's face shows exactly how fun all of this was. Aslan eventually woke up again and got down on the floor where he settled in for a second nap. Dave petted his head as Aslan drifted off again. Touching a lion cub is an unforgettable experience and seeing that the cub enjoyed this as well made it all the more fun.
But the story doesn't end there. Dave later told one of his personal heroes, Jim, a 92 year old World War II veteran about this experience. Jim, an animal lover himself, listened in wonder and his eyes lit up. He said he would also love an opportunity to some day meet a lion.
In a touching show of generosity, the facility that owned this cub heard about Jim's dream and they invited Jim to have an experience with their animals. Treated as an honoured guest, Jim spent more than an hour cuddling with lions and tigers. Touched and overwhelmed, Jim left the facility, promising that it was a day he would never forget. True to his word, Jim spoke of that day in his final moments as he passed away peacefully several months later. It had been one of the most wonderful experiences that Jim had ever had. Dave's own experience with the lion cub was one of his best as well, although watching Jim and the lions was more wonderful by a long shot.
This day with Aslan, and the second day with Jim, having his dream come true, were both days that Dave will never forget.

Orangutan adorably makes her bed and settles down to nap
Orangutans are beautiful animals with intelligence that places them at the lead for all of the primates. They are curious and thoughtful animals. Like we do, they have complex social structures and needs. Yet, their habitat is being destroyed at an alarming rate and their populations are declining rapidly. They are critically endangered and we are at risk of losing them forever in the wild.
This is Puppe, a female orangutan who lives at the Toronto Zoo in Canada. She is at least 53 years old, and she is one of six orangutans who live there. But unlike the others, Puppe is the only one who was born in the wild. She has lived at the zoo since 1974 when it opened.
The Toronto Zoo is one of the most highly rated zoos in the North America for providing living conditions and overall care that far exceed the standards. They treat their animals more like family and they strive to create an environment that meets their physical needs, but also their intellectual and emotional needs. Food and play items are provided in a way that stimulates and challenges the orangutans in new ways.
The Toronto Zoo also plays an impressive role in educational programs and conservation efforts around the world.
Because orangutans are being hunted by humans and being shot by farmers, life in the wild is becoming increasing dangerous for them. As their habitat decreases, they are forced to seek food where farmland borders their jungles. This creates conflict with farmers who are intent on protecting their crops. Driven by consumer demand for food that is grown on what used to be the orangutan's home, we are capable of adding to this pressure on the animals without realizing it. By educating ourselves and avoiding food products that contain palm oil, we can reduce the need to cut down trees in distant lands. This is just one example of how our purchases can negatively, or positively, affect the creatures on the other side of our planet.
Puppe is a true performer and she seems to love people. She is engaged with those who visit her and sit near her favourite spot at the glass barrier between her enclosure and the public. She reacts to facial expressions or interesting objects and she will even use a squeegee and bucket of water that is provided for her, to wipe of the glass in what seems to be her imitation of human behaviour. Whether it is for her own entertainment or for ours is difficult to know, but Puppe seems to have a sense of humour as her imitation of the cleaners is surprisingly good.

Concerned farmer uses drone to check on sick calf
JuJube is a calf who is facing some serious challenges. He was born a few weeks ago on a beautiful farm in Ontario, Canada. It's known as an "ethical farm". Family owned and operated, they raise a small herd on a vast expanse of rolling pasture. This farm is much different than the massive factory farms that are profit driven. Here, they treat the animals more like pets here and the farmers place more emphasis on herd health than profit.
The cows have acres of lush, green pasture and meadows to wander and graze on. There is forest for shade and exploration, and there are ponds full of fresh water for drinking.
Bernise is a seasoned mother and she has been a good cow, having lived on this farm for ten years. She has a wonderful disposition and she trusts the farmers. She will even allow them to handle her new baby and treat him, as he has needed since birth.
JuJube was born with difficulty walking and getting up. A cow who cannot stand will not be able to nurse and he will not be able to follow the herd. He will not thrive and eventually, he will starve.
Farmer Dave will not let this happen to JuJube and he felt he owed it to Bernise to do all that he could to help her calf. Dave has had the veterinarian out to the farm every few days to examine JuJube and check on his progress. They initially suspected that he might suffer from white muscle disease, which is a deficiency in selenium. Dave gave JuJube vitamins and supplements by injection and the veterinarian also prescribed anti-inflammatories and antibiotics because JuJube could also be suffering from an infection in his joints.
JuJube has responded well to treatments and he has gained the strength to walk and follow Bernise. But farmer Dave and a helper have been taking turns lifting JuJube to his feet several times each day. He is given extra milk as well, to help him build his strength.

Friendly humpback whale gives woman the experience of a lifetime
Humpback whales are among the most beautiful and gentle creatures on the planet. They are among the largest creatures on land or in the ocean, smaller than only a few other whale species. They are also among the most intelligent creatures to have ever lived. As recently as 100,000 years ago, humpbacks were even more intelligent than the ancestors of humans.
Tonga is one of the few places on earth where people can get in the water with humpback whales. Although there are strict rules about approaching the whales and it is forbidden to touch them, the whales will occasionally approach a human out of curiosity. One look into their soulful eyes will tell you that these are magnificent creatures, full of understanding.
We have long wondered how a humpback instinctively knows that they are capable of injuring a human if they strike or bump one with any force. Their massive bodies dwarf our own and they are powerful animals. Yet, they never harm humans and there are many cases of whales intentionally showing their gentle side by avoiding contact that would inflict injury.
This very lucky swimmer had slipped into the water near a playful male humpback, hoping for a close look and a few photographs. The whale slowly moved in her direction, rising beneath her in slow motion. It repeatedly rolled on its back, exposing its underside and swimming close to her.
This encounter went on for a full 18 minutes before the guide ended the swim so that the whale could enjoy a quiet rest. The numbers of people and the length of interaction are carefully monitored to ensure that the whales are not disturbed.
Humpback whales come to Tonga to give birth and to breed. These waters are free of sharks and orcas that prey on the whales, especially during vulnerable times. Often, male humpbacks will escort or accompany the females for several weeks after they give birth. This offers the females and their young a level of protection, and it possibly provides the male with an opportunity to breed when the female is ready.
It is unfortunate that these beautiful and gentle animals are still hunted in the waters around many countries. To lose them forever would be an unimaginable tragedy.

Mysterious high speed flying object accidentally recorded by drone real
Rumble / Supernatural & Paranormal — This recording shows a very mysterious white object flying directly at and under a small drone that was recording the scenery around Peterborough, Ontario. The day was uneventful. It was sunny and calm with a wind that was barely perceptible. The flight path took the small drone out from the Otonabee riverbank towards a scenic train bridge. The drone operator is directly behind the drone as it begins the flight at 12m (36 feet) above the water.
The drone was flying forward at 40km/h (28mph), lifting slowly, recording at 4k, 30fps. The Silver Bean Cafe is behind the drone and the only reason for drone pilot being here this day is to record the scenery around the cafe. Nothing unusual was seen when the recording occurred. But looking through the footage that evening, the owner saw a fast moving object flying through the field of view at the 15 second point in the video.
Initially, he thought it was a bird, but this is extremely unlikely because birds do not like the noise of a drone and they will simply not fly so close to one if they can avoid it. Closer analysis shows that the object was visible for less than .5 seconds. Frame by frame inspection shows that it appears and clears the camera view in 15 frames. It is first visible when it dips below the tree line somewhere near the train bridge that is well over 150m (450 feet) away from the drone. A calculation estimates the speed of the object at over 1080km/h (671mph). No bird is able to travel a this speed, especially in a horizontal direction.
The slowed down and enlarged footage shows that the object has no wings. It does not look anything like an animal. It is slightly translucent, like plastic and has a different shape than a bird. But litter blowing through the air cannot reach such a speed. It also cannot travel in this manner without extreme wind. A small recreational drone could not remain stable in a gust of wind strong enough to carry this object.
A projectile fired from the shore could possibly reach high speeds, but this is too large for a projectile and it is not the correct shape. The object also approaches at a slightly downward trajectory that is too flat for anything that could be launched from shore. The drone shows a small peninsula with houses and a lake beyond. There are no positions high enough to fire at the drone and doing so would have caused the object to strike the cafe behind the drone, or at least the water right in front of the cafe.
There is simply no explanation that makes sense enough to explain this high velocity object appearing in this video. Any suggestions or discussion is welcome. But for now, this object is complete mystery.
