Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan has said preventing women from accessing education in neighbouring Afghanistan would be un-Islamic. In an interview with the BBC, Mr Khan laid out the conditions that would need to be met for Pakistan to formally recognise the new Taliban government. He called for the leadership to be inclusive and to respect human rights. Mr Khan also said Afghanistan should not be used to house terrorists who could threaten Pakistan's security. Last week, the Taliban excluded girls from secondary schools with only boys and male teachers allowed back. But Pakistan's leader said he believed girls would soon be able to attend. When pressed on whether the Taliban would realistically meet his criteria for formal recognition, Mr Khan repeatedly called on the international community to give the group more time. "It's just too early to say anything," he said, adding that he expected Afghan women to eventually "assert their rights".

A third Russian man has been charged with alleged involvement in the Novichok nerve agent poisonings in Salisbury, England in 2018, which left one woman dead and three people critically ill. Security sources say Denis Sergeev led the team on the ground, when the nerve agent was used against the former Russian spy Sergei Scripal. His daughter Yulia was also poisoned in the attack. Another woman who handled a bottle containing the poison was taken ill and died. It’s alleged that Denis Sergeev is a senior member of the GRU - Russian agents who carry out sabotage and assassinations. Two other alleged GRU agents, Anatoliy Chepiga and Alexander Mishkin, have also been accused of carrying out the attack. China will not build new coal-fire projects abroad, a move that could be pivotal in tackling global emissions. President Xi Jinping made the announcement in his address at the United Nations General Assembly. China has been funding coal projects in countries like Indonesia and Vietnam under a massive infrastructure project known as the Belt and Road initiative. But it has been under pressure to end the financing, as the world tries to meet Paris climate agreement targets.

North Korea has tested a new long-range cruise missile capable of hitting much of Japan, state media said on Monday. It suggests the country is still capable of developing weapons despite food shortages and an economic crisis. The weekend tests saw missiles travelling up to 1,500km (930 miles), the official KCNA news agency said. Japan said it had "significant concerns" and the US military said the tests posed threats to the international community.

A major row broke out between leaders of the Taliban just days after they set up a new government in Afghanistan, senior Taliban officials told the BBC. Supporters of two rival factions reportedly brawled at the presidential palace in the capital Kabul. The argument appeared to centre on who did the most to secure victory over the US, and how power was divided up in the new cabinet.

North Korea’s military parade features hazmat suits and gas masks - BBC News North Korea has held a military parade to mark the communist state's 73rd founding anniversary, but did not display any major ballistic missiles. State media photos of the night-time parade showed marching soldiers in what appeared to be bright red hazmat suits and gas masks. According to our correspondent this may be a sign that a special force has been created to help prevent the spread of Covid-19. Leader Kim Jong-un, who looked visibly slimmer, was seen among the unmasked crowds hugging children. On Thursday, state media also released images of fire trucks, tractors, and fireworks at the parade. North Korea is suffering from food shortages and a deepening economic crisis due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Doctors, scientists, intelligence agents and government officials have all been trying to find out what causes "Havana syndrome" a mystery illness that has struck American diplomats and spies. It often started with a sound, one that people struggled to describe. "Buzzing", "grinding metal", "piercing squeals", was the best they could manage.   Havana syndrome first emerged in Cuba in 2016. The first cases were CIA officers, which meant they were kept secret. But, eventually, word got out and anxiety spread. Twenty-six personnel and family members would report a wide variety of symptoms. There were whispers that some colleagues thought sufferers were crazy and it was "all in the mind".  Five years on, reports now number in the hundreds and, the BBC has been told, span every continent, leaving a real impact on the US's ability to operate overseas.

The world’s largest factory to capture carbon dioxide from the air has begun operations in Iceland. Reducing the amount of CO₂ in the Earth’s atmosphere would help reduce the effects of climate change. It showcases a developing technology considered by some to be an important tool in the fight against climate change but sceptics question how much impact it can really have. Is it a futuristic vision of how to save the planet from runaway climate change, or a futile expense that distracts from the urgency of slashing co2 emissions? According to the companies that constructed the plant, Climeworks and Carbfix, when operating at capacity the plant will draw 4,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide out of the air every year.

Lyse Doucet, the BBC's Chief International Correspondent, reports live from Kabul as the final US soldier left Afghanistan. Celebratory gun shots rang out across the capital as US forces ended their occupation of the country - with no US military presence on Afghan soil for the first time since 2001. Leaders of the "Islamic emirate of Afghanistan" gathered at Kabul airport to declare "this victory belongs to us all".

The senior British commander on the ground in Kabul has been speaking for the first time about the UK's evacuation from Afghanistan. The last British troops returned from the country at the weekend after helping to rescue more than 15,000 people.

US officials have said an Afghanistan operation - an air strike involving a drone - targeted a suicide bomber in a vehicle who was aiming to carry out an attack at Kabul airport. "We are confident we hit the target we were aiming for," a military official told the BBC's US partner network CBS. "Initial reports indicate there were no civilian casualties," the official said, adding: "Secondary explosions from the vehicle indicated the presence of a substantial amount of explosive material." A spokesman for the Taliban also said the US airstrike had targeted a suspected bomber travelling in a car, according to the Associated Press.

At least two explosions have been reported near the Abbey Gate, being used for evacuations at Kabul airport. One blast was near the Baron Hotel, being used as a staging post by Western nations for evacuations. A Pentagon spokesman confirmed there had been a "number of US and civilian casualties" in the attack.

US President Joe Biden says the US is "on pace" to meet a 31 August deadline for evacuations, despite previous calls from allies for an extension. Mr Biden said the airlift had to come to an end soon because of an increasing threat from the Islamic State group in Afghanistan. The longer the US stayed in the country, he said, there was an "acute and growing risk of an attack" by the group.
