We stand for God - organ - Practice every day - for God we live - #shorts
One offspring nominated this as her favourite hymn, so I had to put it in the choir schedule and practise it every day and it's been tougher than anticipated. This is the arrangement from the Living Parish Hymnbook.
We stand for God and for his glory,
The Lord supreme and God of all;
Against his foes we raise his standard;
Around the cross we hear his call.
Chorus
Strengthen our faith, Redeemer;
Guard us when danger is nigh;
To thee we pledge our lives and service,
For God we live , for God we’ll die:
To thee we pledge our lives and service,
For God we live, for God we die.
We stand for God! Jesus our master
Has died for us with love untold;
His law divine and truth unchanging
In this our land their place must hold.
We stand for God! in ages olden
He placed “the Cross” our stars beside;
O may our land, gracious and golden,
Be faithful to the Crucified.

Salve Festa Dies - Cool chorus, tricky verses - Easter procession hymn - Hail festival day!
Day 88 of #100daysofchant
You guys probably all go to the Easter Vigil and sleep in on Easter Sunday, don't you? Well, some really cool stuff happens while you guys are all sleeping. Easter Sunday has this little known optional procession.
Do you need a translation here when the words are in the video?
Way back when I put A New Book of Old Hymns together, I could not find a translation anywhere. Now they seem to abound on the internet! So many different versions though! There are even variations for Ascension Thursday and Pentecost.
Salve festa dies toto venerabilis aevo
In tempore paschale: qua Deus infernum vicit et astra tenet.
In die ascensione: qua Deus ascendit victor et astra tenet.
In die pentecoste: qua sacer accendit Spiritus igne suos.
Hail festal day, hallowed forever; On which God defeats hell and seizes heaven.
Ecce renascentis testatur gratia mundi
Omnia cum Domino dona redisse suo.
Behold the beauty of the world reborn bears witness that all gifts have returned with their Lord.
Namque triumphanti post tristia tartara Christo
Undique fronde nemus gramina flore favent.
For indeed, from every side leafy groves and meadow flowers greet Christ as he returns in triumph after the gloom of hell.
Qui genus humanum cernes mersisse profundo,
ut hominem redimeres, es quoque factus homo.
When Thou sawest mankind buried in sin Thou becamest man to rescue man.
Tristia cesserunt infernae vincula legis
Expavitque chaos luminis ore premi.
The cruel bondage of hell's tyranny has passed away, Chaos is in terror of being overwhelmed by the face of light.
Pollicitam sed redde fidem, precor, alma potestas,
Tertia lux redii, surge sepulte meus.
O Nourishing Power, fulfil Thy promise, I pray. The third day dawns. Arise, my buried Lord.
Solve catenates inferni carceris umbrae,
et revoca sursum, quiquid ad ima ruit.
Loose the gloomy chains of hell's prison house and call back whatever is plummeting.
Redde tuam faciem, videant ut saecula lumen
redde diem, qui nos, te moriente, fugit.
Show us Thy face again, that the world may see its light. Show us the daylight that fled from us while Thou wast dying.

Ubi Caritas est vera (with one slip into "et amor") Gregorian Chant
Day 87 of #100daysofchant
I went with the "est vera" version thinking that it would be the better version as the new books were using it - like the way some of the Pre-Urbanite versions of hymns were being revived. Unfortunately, this isn't the way most of the groups I sing with sing it. "Ubi caritas et amor" is pretty entrenched. If I ever get around to the new version of A New Book of Old Hymns, this is one of many little changes to be made.

Stabat Mater - the easy hymn version - Our Lady of Sorrows by the Cross
Day 86 of #100daysofchant
This one's a classic hymn to accompany the Stations of the Cross. The Latin is so brief and concise and beautiful. There's also a Sequence version with a bit more variety to the tune, but when I put together A New Book of Old Hymns, this simpler one was the only one I knew.

Crux Fidelis - Faithful Cross - the 1962 Liber Usualis version
Day 85 of #100daysofchant
I love how the chorus repeats in two parts. Keeps you awake figuring out which chorus comes next. Also makes it a bit more interesting to sing along the chorus. And it is beautiful - recounting the story of Redemption from Eden to Bethlehem to the Upper Room to Calvary to Heaven.

Crux fidelis, inter omnes
arbor una nobilis:
nulla silva talem profert,
fronde, flore, germine.
Dulce lignum, dulces clavos,
dulce pondus sustinet.
Faithful cross, above all other:
one and only noble tree!
None in foliage, none in blossom,
none in fruit thy peer may be:
sweetest wood and sweetest iron,
sweetest weight is hung on thee.
De parentis protoplasti
Fraude Factor condolens,
Quando pomi noxialis
In necem morsu ruit:
Ipse lignum tunc notavit,
Damna ligni ut solveret.
Hoc opus nostræ salutis
Ordo depoposcerat;
Multiformis proditoris
Ars ut artem falleret,
Et medelam ferret inde,
Hostis unde læserat.
Quando venit ergo sacri
Plenitudo temporis,
Missus est ab arce Patris
Natus, orbis Conditor;
Atque ventre virginali
Carne amictus prodiit.
Vagit infans inter arcta
Conditus præsepia:
Membra pannis envoluta
Vrigo Mater alligat:
Et Dei manus pedesque
Stricta cingit fascia.
Lustra sex qui jam peregit,
Tempus implens corporis,
Sponte libera Redemptor
Passioni deditus,
Agnus in Crucis levatur
Immolandus stipite.
Felle potus ecce languet:
Spina, clavi, lancea
Mite corpus perforarunt:
Unda manat, et cruor:
Terra, pontus, astra, mundus,
Quo lavantur flumine!
Flecte ramos arbor alta,
Tensa laxa viscera,
Et rigor lentescat ille,
Quem dedit nativitas;
Et superni membra regis
Tende miti stipite.
Sola digna tu fuisti
Ferre mundi victimam;
Atque portum præparare
Arco mundo naufrago,
Quam sacer cruor perunxit,
Fusus Agni corpore.
Sempiterna sit beatæ
Trinitati gloria,
Æqua Patri, Filioque;
Par decus Paraclito:
Unius Trinique nomen
Laudet universitas.

Adoro Te Devote - Thomas Aquinas' really cool hymn to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament
Day 83 of #100daysofchant
Everyone should know this one. I keep assuming everyone does, and that's probably why I haven't recorded it already. This is one I loved reading in our parish hymnbook during Mass way back in the 80s, in the Gerard Manley Hopkins translation without the Pelican verse. I would spend Mass memorizing it, even though I'm not sure if I understood it all.
You can find more info about it, plus the pdf for the visuals here:

SICUT in holocáustis aríetum et taurórum, et sicut in míllibus agnórum pínguium: sic fiat sacrifícium nostrum in conspéctu tuo hódie, ut pláceat tibi: quia non est confúsio confidéntibus in te, Dómine.
As in holocausts of rams and bullocks, and as in thousands of fat lambs; so let our sacrifice be made in Thy sight this day, that it may please Thee: for there is no confusion to them that trust in Thee, O Lord.

Stella Caeli - the medieval hymn to protect against pestilence, plague or pandemic
Day 65 of #100daysofchant
0:00 some explanation
1:02 Singing Stella Caeli
https://www.ccwatershed.org/2020/03/13/stella-caeli-a-hymn-against-pestilence/
The Star of Heaven that nourished the Lord drove away the plague of death which the first parents of man brought into the world. May this bright Star now vouchsafe to extinguish that foul constellation whose battles have slain the people with the wound of death.
O most pious Star of the Sea, preserve us from pestilence; hear us, O Lady, for Thy Son honours Thee by denying Thee nothing. Save us, O Jesus, for whom Thy Virgin Mother supplicates Thee.

Maria, mater gratiae,
Mary, gracious mother,
Dulcis parens clementiae,
Sweet fount of mercy,
Tu nos ab hoste protege,
Protect us from the foe,
Et mortis hora suscipe.
And receive us in our hour of death.
Jesu, tibi sit gloria,
Jesu, glory be to Thee,
Qui natus es de Virgine,
Born of the Virgin,
Cum Patre et almo Spiritu,
With the Father and the Holy Spirit,
In sempiterna saecula. Amen.
For ever and ever. Amen.
