Metal loss due to rusting made the yoke bores big enough the u-joint caps pushed through with light thumb pressure. Restoring the press-fit this time with a small, sharp center punch to get back on the road. Next u-joint change will also get new axles.

After removing basket rusted u-joint caps from front axle knuckles, the new u-joint caps dropped through the yoke bored with light thumb pressure. Next time, I’ll be replacing the axles along with the u-joints, but repairing it this time by knurling the yoke bored by holding a small, sharp center punch back about 1/16” and banging on it with a hammer about 1000 times until evenly marked up all around.

Use ship air to clear chips from hole & collect it all with shop vac instead of blowing it all over & making huge mess.
