Niger Junta Arrests French Official After France Refuse to Leave Country - On Tuesday, September 12th, 2023, France’s Foreign Ministry announced on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, that a French official had been detained in military-run Niger. The ministry announced that Stephane Jullien, counsellor for French citizens abroad — a non-diplomatic, elected post — was arrested on Friday, September 8th, 2023 by Nigerien security forces and called for his “immediate release.” The Foreign Ministry did not comment on where and how Jullien was detained, or whether officials in Paris were aware of his whereabouts. It merely stated that France was closely monitoring the issue and was "fully mobilised" to ensure that he had the same protections as any other official in other countries. The arrest of Mr Stephane Jullien comes after military troops ousted President Mohamed Bazoum from power in July 2023 and ordered all French officials to leave the country. The Nigerien Foreign Ministry asked French Ambassador Sylvain Itte to leave Niger within 48 hours in a letter dated August 25, 2023, that accused him of neglecting an invitation to meet with the ministry. The letter also referred to "actions of the French government that are contrary to the interests of Niger." However, France has brazenly refused to comply with the order to leave the country, claiming that Niger's ruling junta is not the country's legitimate government and as such, has no right to order it out.

However, the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) has reported that the U.S. government is deliberating the possibility of taking action against the leaders of the newly established military administration in Niger Republic, which assumed power in late July. According to the SVR statement the United States is contemplating the potential of taking direct action against the leaders of Niger's National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland, the group responsible for orchestrating the military coup against Niger President Mohamed Bazoum. As per intelligence received by the SVR, the United States is evidently dissatisfied with the unfolding events in Niger, where an interim government led by General Abdourahamane Tchiani recently assumed control following a military coup. Washington is actively exploring strategies not only to curb the rise of Africa as a significant center of influence in the multipolar world—a development seen as potentially perilous for Western interests—but also to assert its influence in the strategically vital Sahel region, effectively taking over the role previously held by France, stated the SVR press office.

Last month, the Los Angeles Dodgers created a ruckus when the team announced it would invite a group of LGBTQ self-styled nuns called the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence to receive an award on Pride Night, June 16. Some enraged Catholic groups and players noted the Sisters’ reputation for “making fun of a religion” and successfully pressured the Dodgers to disinvite the group — only for the Dodgers to do an about-face and reinvite them. The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence reimagine the church and its traditions and perform parodies of gender and sexuality, actions that have long drawn contempt from their detractors. But the group’s history also includes important community work that has been equally, if not more, divisive than their clothing. While the fervor over the Sisters’ inclusion during Pride Night is tied to a rise in anti-LGBTQ lobbying, it is also rooted in the Catholic Church’s long-held rules against the use and promotion of contraceptives and the fact that the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence were the vanguard of safe-sex education during the AIDS epidemic. On Easter weekend 1979, a group of gay men in San Francisco donned nuns’ habits and traversed the city. Driven by boredom and by frustration with the hyper-butch “Castro clone” look that permeated the gay community — which consisted of Levi’s jeans and leather, a muscular physique and a mustache — they wore attire that challenged the status quo. A founding member known as Sister Vicious Power Hungry Bitch explained how the major attention the Sisters received shaped their work: “We should use it as a tool for social change, for the change that we want to see.” That summer, she and four other founders — Sister Missionary Position, Reverend Mother, the Abbess and Sister Hysterectoria — created that change by forming the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence “to promulgate universal joy and expiate stigmatic guilt.” Over the years, the Sisters grew in number in San Francisco and outside the city, with over 40 chapters in the United States and 20 more abroad. The Sisters could be spotted at gay protests, marches, fundraisers and faith events. Over time, they expanded their mission to include a devotion “to community service, ministry and outreach to those on the edges, and to promoting human rights, respect for diversity and spiritual enlightenment.”

By now, the cultural visibility of the transgender, genderqueer and gender nonconforming community has seriously expanded the way that we view gender. And while general awareness about gender diversity has increased, there are still some technical aspects that many people continue to struggle with, chief among those being the use of gender-neutral pronouns. As a genderqueer advocate and media personality who has used gender-neutral pronouns for years, I have many pointers and tips to share. But don’t just take it from me; I also spoke with Nick Adams, director of GLAAD’s transgender media program, about his thoughts on the issue. With our guidance, you can confidently show up to that gender-fabulous dance party. Let’s get to it. Why do people want to use gender-neutral pronouns anyway? What’s wrong with gendered pronouns? It’s not that there is something wrong with gendered pronouns; it’s just that the pronouns “he” and “she” come with a certain set of expectations about how someone should express their identity and relate to the world. For many people, gender normativity can get in the way of self-expression—so the words “he” or “she” can feel limiting. “Some people have a gender identity that is non-binary, and conventional pronouns have the effect of assigning them a binary identity,” says Adams. Take me, for example. I was assigned male at birth, but I’ve spent a good portion of my life trying to get away from the expectations that have been placed on me because of that. Asking people to use the gender-neutral pronoun “they” instead of “he” to refer to me has been a big step in my journey toward self-love and self-acceptance. What should I use if someone doesn’t want to be referred to as “he” or “she”? What are the options? In my experience, the most common gender-neutral pronoun used by genderqueer and gender nonconforming people is “they/them/their,” but that doesn’t mean it’s the only option. Some people choose to use the gender-neutral pronouns “ze/hir/hirs” (pronounced “zee/here/here”) or “ey/em/eir” (pronounced “ay/em/airs”), among others. Many gender-neutral pronouns are out there, and they can certainly get confusing. That’s where Google comes in handy!
