Canonicity
Recently in Bible Class, a question was asked about the canon of the Holy Scriptures. We will spend one week on how the canon was formed and how we came to have the books in the Holy Bible that are declared to be our Scriptures and the Word of God.

Third Sunday of Easter
Jesus is the Good Shepherd. He gave His life for the sheep. Risen from the dead, He continues to lead us to the green pastures of His Word and the living waters of Baptism and Holy Communion. He leads us through the valley of the shadow of death, to eternal life. All we like sheep have gone astray, but now we have returned to the Shepherd and Ruler of our souls.

Palm Sunday
On Palm Sunday we welcome Jesus as He comes among us. We cheer Him on with great rejoicing. Our Savior has arrived to save us from sin, death, and hell through His triumphant victory on the cross. Jesus arrives to give His life as a sacrifice for many. “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.” John 12:23-25 Jesus is willing and glad to give His life to us. Hosanna in the Highest! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. The King of Israel has arrived!

Fourth Sunday in Lent
In the middle of the wilderness the Lord provides food to hungry thousands. In the middle of Lent we are given an oasis of joy to see the bread of life that our Lord gives to us. Moses gave the manna in the wilderness and the people died. Jesus gives the bread, by which a man eats of it, he will live forever. The bread Jesus gives is His flesh, which He gives for the life of the world.

Third Sunday in Lent
Jesus casts out demons but is accused of operating in league with Satan. Skepticism abounds, but Christ patiently teaches. He comes to overthrow the devil’s kingdom and all his lies, not work with him. He brings His Word so that the houses of our bodies might have no room for Satan and his demonic activity. Another Sunday in Lent gathers us around the theme of Satan, his deceits, and Christ’s battle to defeat him.

Second Sunday in Lent
The Second Sunday of Lent is known as Remember Sunday (This title comes from the Latin word reminiscere and is drawn from the first word of the Introit, the first psalm of the day, Psalm 25:6). On this Sunday we pray for the Lord to remember us. We pray this though, not on account of any merit or worthiness in us, but according to His mercy. God answers our pleas by giving us His Son Jesus, assuring us that His help is for us and that He remembers us even when we are spiritually and physically destitute. As we are in the season of Lent, we think also of the thief on the cross who asked the Lord to remember him too. Though he had nothing to offer Jesus but faith, Jesus said to this man who had ruined everything in his life and was suffering from capital punishment, “Today you will be with Me in Paradise.” God rejoices in those who come bringing nothing and desiring everything from Him.

Sexagesima
70. 60. 50. 40. The countdown to Easter has begun! On this Sunday known as “Sexagesima” (60 Sunday) we are reminded that in two months we will be there. The suffering of this present age that is caused by our sin will one day come to an end as the joy of everlasting life with Christ and the resurrection of the dead will commence. This Sunday we join the multitudes with Jesus as He tells the parable of the Sower & the Seed. We will learn about the enemies to our faith and how the devil wishes to snatch the Word about Christ from our hearts.

Septuagesima
On Septuagesima Sunday we recount our Lord’s parable the workers in the vineyard. Though life called to the Lord’s work is full of toil and labor in this world of sin and trouble, we also live under a good and gracious master who will give us either what He has promised or more. Though we cannot always understand His ways of operation, we know that He will do whatever is right because He loves us dearly.
