Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the world's longest-reigning monarch, has died after 70 years on the throne, the palace says.
The king, 88, was widely revered in Thailand. He was seen as a stabilising figure in a country hit by cycles of political turmoil and multiple coups.
He had been in poor health in recent years and made few public appearances. The king's death comes as Thailand remains under military rule following a coup in 2014.

Death toll in children’s daycare shooting in Thailand rises to 36
A former police officer has stormed a child daycare centre in Thailand, killing at least 36 people, most of them children, before killing himself and his family.
The attacker, armed with a shotgun, a pistol and a knife, opened fire on children and adults at the centre in Nong Bua Lamphu province at about 12:30 pm (0530 GMT) on Thursday before fleeing the scene in a pick-up truck.
The dead include at least 24 children, said police colonel Jakkapat Vijitraithaya, from the province where the attack happened.
The gunman forced his way into a locked room where children were sleeping at the time, according to a witness.
