The hummingbird family (Trochilidae) is a family of swiftlets known as hummingbirds. Small birds hover in the air by flapping their wings rapidly (80 times per second, depending on the size of the bird) and are the only birds that can fly backward. The flying ability of hummingbirds is superb, and they are also called "divine birds", "comets", "forest goddesses" and "corolla". Amazilia saucerrottei (Medellin, Colombia) Mellisuga Helenae weighs just 1.8 grams, making it the smallest bird in the world. Another typical North American hummingbird, the red-throated northern hummingbird (Archilochus colubris), weighs about three grams and is 7.6 centimeters long. The largest hummingbird is the giant hummingbird Patagona gigas, which weighs just 20 grams.
