January 9, 1961 Officials of the Los Angeles Chargers returned to San Diego Monday to accompany engineers in determining what changes must be made if Balboa Stadium is to be used as a future home for the American League club. Head coach and general manager Sid Gillman was especially critical of what he called totally inadequate dressing room facilities. Other parts of the stadium under criticism of the Charger officials were the crash wall, built for auto racing, and the poor condition of the playing turf. It is hoped that a list of improvements deemed necessary by the Chargers will soon be compiled with cost estimations to be turned over to Mayor Dail and the City Council.

A popular Del Mar beach has been closed after a shark attack was reported around 10 a.m. on Friday. Del Mar lifeguards confirmed that there was a shark attack off the shore near the 17th Street beach. A Great White Shark washed ashore at Torrey Pines Beach less than a week ago on Sunday. The 8-foot-long female was only 2 years old.

At least one person was transported to an area hospital Sunday night after being involved in a possible DUI-related crash, according to Oceanside police. Oceanside Fire Department responded to the 2800 block of Mesa Drive in the Oceanside area of San Diego County around 6:30 p.m. following reports of a crash, officials with Oceanside police said.

The Downtown Association held its annual Improvement and Beautification Awards dinner tonight. Chairman C.J. Paderewski headed the panel of judges. Association president George A. Scott, assisted by Mrs. America Marilyn Mitchell, handed out the awards to stores and businesses which did the most to modernize their buildings. C. Arnholt Smith Jr. accepted a plaque for the new US National Band building. Contractor Morley Golden got a trophy for the Center City construction program.

November 16, 1965 Silent The Board of Education listened for more than 2 and a half hours today to testimony on whether three students…one from Mann Junior High and two from Crawford High…should be transferred to Snyder Continuation School. The boys, all 14 years of age, Ken Pernicano, Larry McSeaton and Norman Lombardo, refused to cut their Beatle-type hair in defiance of school regulations because they said it was part of their rock and roll band uniform. Don Clark, county deputy counsel, represented the school administration. He called as witnesses Eugene Brucker, Mann Junior High principal, and principal and vice-principal of Crawford High. The case established for the boys by their attorney, Conrad Caldwell, was based on the promise the boys would keep their hair trimmed as displayed this afternoon; it would be a hardship to go to Snyder; they did not create disturbances because of their hair and that their hair is part of their uniform. The school’s position was taken by secondary school superintendent Dr. Dwight Twist who said this was not a penalty for the boys but rather an opportunity for specialized educational (the rest of the script is missing).

All eastbound lanes of Coronado Bridge were shutdown Sunday evening following a multi-crash, according to the Coronado Police Department. According to CHP logs, dispatchers received reports of a crash around 2:30 p.m. involving several vehicles that hit each other traveling eastbound on the Coronado Bridge.

Two racehorses collapsed and died at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club on the opening weekend of the track's fall season. "The 5-year-old gelding Kazuhiko collapsed and died while walking back to the barn after the 5th race at Del Mar ... a sudden death," Mike Marten, spokesman for the California Horse Racing Board, told City News Service on Sunday.

National City police arrested a man who could face charges of attempted homicide, elder abuse, child abuse, and arson after he set his ex-girlfriend's National City mobile home ablaze following a domestic dispute, according to officials.
