I Should’ve Started This Last Week // Raising Meat Chickens {Week 1}
Our meat chickens are a week old and they have already grown quite a bit. This week we’ll put them on the scale so we can start tracking their growth over the remaining seven weeks.
We’re raising Cornish cross meat birds for the first time and want to share the whole experience with you. We’ll be releasing a new video each week all the way through butcher day detailing things that surprised us and what we’re looking forward the next week.

Our first ever meat chickens came in the mail last week. We purchased 30 Cornish cross females from Meyer Hatchery. Cornish cross are incredibly fast growers – from hatch to butcher in only 8 weeks. We’ve done quite a bit of research on this and feel very well prepared but everyone knows there’s no replacement for experience. If you’ve thought about raising meat chickens but just haven’t made that commitment yet I hope you can look to our experiences as something you can learn from. If we can do it, so can you!
For the first week we kept our meat birds separate from our layer chicks using these reusable brooder panels. Now that some time has passed we’re taking down the panels and allowing our meat and layer chickens to run together. When they get older we wouldn’t want to do this but since both sets of chicks are on the same feed right now it is fine. We’re still running two heat lamps as well; in case a bulb in one lamp goes out the birds will be able to gather around the other lamp giving us just a little extra safety.
We’ll have a video on this new chick brooder coming as soon as I can put the video together. This is my happy place – I could sit in here and watch these baby birds for hours. We hope this series interests, inspires, and entertains you. Thanks for watching – see y’all soon!

Cattle Make Me Nervous
Each year we raise a beef steer to put in the freezer and feed our family. I’m still a little worked up about our negative experiences from last year.

Since we bought our farm we have been raising our own beef. Each year we buy a weaned calf from a local farmer and finish it out on grain and pasture until it is time to head off to freezer camp. The beef is absolutely delicious and in regards to the final product we couldn’t be more satisfied.
Most of our focus here on the homestead is our dairy goat herd. If a goat gets out of line it’s not too hard to get them back in the barn but for the most part they are docile and as sweet as can be. If a 600-1200lb cow wants to act up there’s not much this ol’ boy is going to do about it.
The first steer we raised was a dream and was tame as could be. The second one was a little more standoffish and even jumped the fence on the first day but after that we had no more problems. However, last year we bought two at the same time and they were too much to handle. Their first day out on pasture they jumped every fence we had and were gone for a couple of days until a local wrangler could get them brought back to the farm. Our saving grace in this matter was the fact that these steers were large enough that we could just finish them out in the barn together for a few months and they never had to see pasture again. Even after going through all of that the beef was still excellent.
This year we’re doing things a little differently. We bought our calf from a farmer who hand feeds his animals every day. We’ll also be using an electric polywire fence with a plug-in energizer to keep him contained to his designated pasture. If that goes well we’ll probably explore some rotational grazing with him but for now he’ll have a home in the field by the barn.
Our experience last year really soured me on this whole cattle thing and made me feel like I was incapable of doing this anymore until we made some real infrastructure improvements. We are, however, doing it again because this is something I feel like is good for our family. Just because something is difficult I don’t want to shy away from it. We experience great growth in taking on hard things and overcoming challenges and I want my kids to know (and to reaffirm myself, as well) that if you set your mind to something, and learn from past mistakes, you can accomplish anything.
If this message resonates with you I hope you consider subscribing to the channel. If you want to learn more about how we raise our beef or some of the mistakes we’ve made along the way you can check out some of the other videos that we’ve done. See y’all soon!

The Real Reason We’re Quadrupling Our Chicken Flock
Eggs are expensive and chicken is tasty but are we doing too much too fast?

Chickens are the gateway homestead animal. “Let’s get a few chickens. I mean, free eggs, right?” That’s how the conversation starts. For us it was only a few short months from uttering those words until we were looking for a new home with acreage.
A chicken’s “useful” egg laying life is usually from about 20 weeks of age through about year two. They’ll still lay beyond then but their highest production is typically within that window. Most of our flock is going on 3+ years old now and egg production has taken a serious dip. It’s time to bring some younger hens into the fold so we can have steady supply of eggs this year.
Of course these new hens won’t begin laying until July or August at the earliest so in the meantime we found five more hens about one year old. They’re laying right now and with the daylight hours getting a little longer each day our older girls are starting to lay again too. For the first time in months we have eggs again!
All this is in addition to the meat birds that will be coming very soon too. When they arrive we’ll have over 60 baby chickens on the farm at the same time. We’re overhauling the barn to have the ULTIMATE chick brooder in anticipation of their arrival. If you want to see that make sure you’re subscribed to the channel so you can keep up with all the stuff going on here on the homestead!

Don't Be Dumb #shorts

Chicken tractors are designed to be lightweight and portable so you can move them regularly throughout your pastures as part of a rotational grazing plan. We knew as we were building this thing that it was going to be very heavy. However it only needed to move about 8ft at a time, so what’s the big deal?
Moving it from the yard (where we built it) to the field for the first time the little rope I was using for a handle broke. Uh oh. I’ll be replacing that with a bigger, beefier rope, but for the immediate situation I had to do something.
My dad would’ve told me to “work smarter, not harder.” Maybe I could’ve placed a set of hand trucks at the front of the tractor and used them to slowly maneuver the structure into the field. Instead I chose the He-Man approach: find a grabbing point, lift the front of the tractor up, and drag it to its destination.
Lessons learned: Don’t be dumb / treating your body like a rented mule is a good way to put your family in a bad spot if things go south. Don’t overbuild things that are supposed to be lightweight.
And always remember to lift with your legs.

If You Have Livestock You Have Dead Stock

If you’ve watched our channel lately you’re probably aware that recently we brought a couple of new goats home to the farm. Eden and her young doeling came to us from our friends at Sage and Stone Homestead. We have enjoyed them both immensely in their short time with us and we were so excited to have them as a part of our herd.
We took the little doeling to the vet for disbudding (removal of horn buds); a pretty routine procedure. She was doing fine until the next day when her condition started to rapidly decline. Within a few hours she had passed
.
We were shocked at how fast this had transpired and we began wracking our brains trying to come up with a reason for this. Was she sick and we didn’t know it? Was the disbudding botched? It was impossible to tell from looking at her. Thankfully Heather (Sage and Stone Homestead) volunteered to perform a necropsy. At the conclusion of that we are reasonably confident that enterotoxemia is the culprit.
It was incredibly sad to lose this baby. We had grown attached to that goat in a short time and it was heartbreaking for the plans and dreams we had for her to be dashed in a moment. However, a harsh reality of farm life is death. No one likes losing an animal. We pour our heart and soul into these creatures and we take the responsibility of their care seriously. Our goal each and every day is to learn and get better, in not only this but in all other things, too.
Thanks for being a part of our journey. It means the world to us that you watch, like, share, all that stuff. See y’all soon.

Our first ever meat chickens will be arriving in a few weeks. Our plan is to raise them on pasture as part of our rotational grazing strategy and to do that properly a chicken tractor is needed. A chicken tractor is a mobile coop and is designed to be lightweight and easily moveable. In typical “me” fashion I threw those points out the window in favor of this behemoth.
There are two main types of tractor: Salatin style and Suscovich style. Each have their own pros and cons but for our purposes we gravitated toward the Suscovich model. We utilized upcycled metal roofing for the roof of the coop and hardware cloth for the walls.
At the end of the build we had a “hoss daddy” of a tractor that is incredibly difficult to move but should withstand anything Mother Nature can throw its way. And besides, the tractor only needs to move about 8ft at a time, so why does weight matter anyway? (sarcasm font)

Not every goat that is born on our farm will spend the entirety of his or her days here. Two of our 2022 wethers, Kash and Oscar, are about to move on to their future homes.
We’re thankful to have found a family that will enjoy having our goats. Turns out they’re just getting into the homestead life and have moved from the city onto a few acres and are ready to start taking back control of their food sources. It was exciting meeting someone else who shares our line of thinking and to share a little of our story with them.
We’re absolutely SWAMPED with exciting things happening on the homestead right now and we are doing our best to capture it and share it with you. Meat chickens will be delivered soon (plus more chicken “shenanigans”), our beef steer will be arriving this weekend (fingers crossed), and more baby goats are due any day now! Like, share, subscribe, all that good stuff; we sincerely thank you for joining us on our journey!

Trying to Tell Our Goats That Something is a Bad Idea #shorts
They're always trying to hurt themselves. Goats: you can take them off the mountain but you can't take the mountain goat out of them.

Why we’re Nuking our Dairy Goat Plan
After years of struggling with ADGA registration for our dairy goat herd it’s time to blow the plan up and get back to the drawing board. We’re starting this new phase by bringing home a couple of Nigerian dwarf goats from our friends at @SageandStoneHomestead !

When we brought our first dairy goats to the homestead our plan was to have an ADGA registered herd. To us, having a pedigree on our goats and the feeling of security that comes with having registration for the animals you pour your heart and soul into was an idea we liked. However after a couple of years in the goat business and fighting through issues with the American Dairy Goat Association we’ve decided to table that plan and focus instead on putting milk in the pail.
We don’t own “show goats.” Of course we want to raise a herd that conforms to breed standard but show quality animals don’t necessarily put more milk in the fridge or help us reach our homestead dreams.
Enter Eidolon, a Nigerian dwarf goat from our friends down the road at Sage and Stone Homestead. Eidolon no longer fit in to Heather and Levi’s current and future plans and it was time to move her on to another farm. Eidolon, as well as her newborn doeling, both has supernumerary (extra) teats. This is considered a defect amongst show goats even though her milking performance is not impacted at all. It turns out that one of our does, Calamity Jane, also has supernumerary teats, we just didn’t notice until after her kidding a couple of weeks ago.
Getting straightened out with the ADGA is going nowhere fast. And after some thought Megan decided, and convinced me, that bringing Eidolon and baby to our homestead moving away from a registered herd was the right move for our family and our farm at this time.
There are a lot of very exciting things happening around our farm right now and we’d love it if you subscribed and joined us on the journey. Thanks for being here – see y’all soon!

New Year, New Baby! Moments After Goat Birth on the Family Homestead
Another Nigerian Dwarf goat kid born on the farm today! This time Calamity Jane, another first time freshener, gave us an adorable doeling. Stay tuned – our entire dairy goat plan is about to change!

New Year’s Day 2023 and what a way to ring in the new year. Calamity Jane, one of the first goats born on our farm, just welcomed her first kid into the world. We knew it would happen soon but that didn’t keep her from surprising us just a little earlier than we expected!
Mom and baby are both doing great. I’m always amazed at how fast these little ones get acclimated to their surroundings; after a few days they’re hopping all over the place and they practically fit in with the rest of the herd.
We’re about halfway thru our 2022-2023 kidding season. Minnie Pearl, Calamity Jane’s sister, will be the next to kid in another few weeks. Plus, in an upcoming video we’ll discuss why our entire dairy goat plan may be changing. Be sure you’re subscribed to the channel so you won’t miss any of the action around the farm! See y’all soon!
