CNN witnesses 9-year-old being sold for marriage to 55-year-old man She was sold to a stranger so her family could eat as Afghanistan crumbles By Anna Coren, Jessie Yeung and Abdul Basir Bina, CNN 9 minute read Published 7:48 PM EDT, Mon November 1, 2021 CNN — Parwana Malik, a 9-year-old girl with dark eyes and rosy cheeks, giggles with her friends as they play jump rope in a dusty clearing. But Parwana’s laughter disappears as she returns home, a small hut with dirt walls, where she’s reminded of her fate: she’s being sold to a stranger as a child bride. The man who wants to buy Parwana says he’s 55, but to her, he’s “an old man” with white eyebrows and a thick white beard, she told CNN on October 22. She worries he will beat her and force her to work in his house. But her parents say they have no choice. For four years, her family have lived in an Afghan displacement camp in northwestern Badghis province, surviving on humanitarian aid and menial work earning a few dollars a day. But life has only gotten harder since the Taliban took power in Afghanistan on August 15. As international aid dries up and the country’s economy collapses, they’re unable to afford basic necessities like food. Her father already sold her 12-year-old sister several months ago. Hunger has pushed some families to make heartbreaking decisions, especially as the brutal winter approaches. The parents gave CNN full access and permission to speak to the children and show their faces, because they say they cannot change the practice themselves. “Day by day, the numbers are increasing of families selling their children,” said Mohammad Naiem Nazem, a human rights activist in Badghis. “Lack of food, lack of work, the families feel they have to do this.” An impossible choice Abdul Malik, Parwana’s father, can’t sleep at night. Ahead of the sale, he told CNN he’s “broken” with guilt, shame and worry. He had tried to avoid selling her – he traveled to the provincial capital city Qala-e-Naw to search unsuccessfully for work, even borrowing “lots of money” from relatives, and his wife resorted to begging other camp residents for food. CNN The money from Parwana’s sale will only sustain the family for a few months, before Malik has to find another solution, he said. Parwana said she hoped to change her parents’ minds – she had dreams of becoming a teacher, and didn’t want to give up her education. But her pleas were futile. On October 24, Qorban, the buyer, who only has one name, arrived at her home and handed 200,000 Afghanis (about $2,200) in the form of sheep, land and cash to Parwana’s father. “This is your bride. Please take care of her … please don’t beat her” Abdul Malik Parwana’s father In an initial interview recording with CNN, Qorban did not use the word marriage to describe the sale of Parwana, saying he already had a wife who would look after Parwana as if she were one of their own children. But in a later on-camera recording on the same day, Qorban said “it is my second marriage.” “(Parwana) was cheap, and her father was very poor and he needs money,” Qorban said. “She will be working in my home. I won’t beat her. I will treat her like a family member. I will be kind.” Parwana, dressed in a black head covering with a colorful floral garland around her neck, hid her face and whimpered as her weeping father told Qorban: “This is your bride. Please take care of her – you are responsible for her now, please don’t beat her.” Qorban agreed, then gripped Parwana’s arm and led her out the door. As they left, her father watching by the doorway, Parwana dug her feet into the dirt and tried to pull away – but it was no use. She was dragged to the waiting car, which slowly pulled away. ‘Absolutely cataclysmic’ Since the Taliban’s takeover, stories like Parwana’s have been on the rise. Though marrying off children under 15 is illegal nationwide, it has been commonly practiced for years, especially in more rural parts of Afghanistan. And it has only spread since August, driven by widespread hunger and desperation. More than half the population is facing acute food insecurity, according to a United Nations report released this week. And more than 3 million children under age 5 face acute malnutrition in the coming months. All the while, food prices are soaring, banks are running out of money and workers are going unpaid. Nearly 677,000 people have been displaced this year due to fighting, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA). Hoshang Hashimi/AFP/Getty Images “It’s absolutely cataclysmic,” said Heather Barr, associate director of the women’s rights division at Human Rights Watch. “We don’t have months or weeks to stem this emergency … we are in the emergency already.” The problem is particularly acute for Afghan girls, who have stayed home and watched their brothers return to secondary school since the Taliban takeover. The Taliban said it is working on a plan to allow girls to return too, but have not said when that could happen or what conditions may be imposed. The uncertainty combined with rising poverty has pushed many girls into the marriage market. “As soon as a girl falls out of education, then suddenly it becomes much more likely that she’s going to be married off” Heather Barr Human Rights Watch “As long as a girl is in school, her family is invested in her future,” said Barr, from Human Rights Watch. “As soon as a girl falls out of education, then suddenly it becomes much more likely that she’s going to be married off.” And once a girl is sold as a bride, her chances of continuing an education or pursuing an independent path are close to zero. Instead, she faces a much darker future. Without access to contraception or reproductive health services, nearly 10% of Afghan girls aged 15 to 19 give birth every year, according to the UN Population Fund (UNFPA). Many are too young to be able to consent to sex and face complications in childbirth due to their underdeveloped bodies – pregnancy-related mortality rates for girls aged 15 to 19 are more than double the rate for women aged 20 to 24, according to UNFPA. ‘I don’t want to leave my parents’ Magul, a 10-year-old girl in neighboring Ghor province, cries every day as she prepares to be sold to a 70-year-old man to settle her family’s debts. Her parents had borrowed 200,000 Afghanis ($2,200) from a neighbor in their village – but without a job or savings, they have no way of returning the money. The buyer had dragged Magul’s father, Ibrahim, to a Taliban prison and threatened to have him jailed for failing to repay his debt. Ibrahim, who only goes by one name, said he promised the buyer he would pay in a month. But now time is up. “I don’t know what to do,” Ibrahim said. “Even if I don’t give him my daughters, he will take them.” Magul’s mother, Gul Afroz, feels just as helpless. “I’m praying to God these bad days pass,” she said. Like Qorban, the buyer claimed he would not mistreat Magul and that she would simply help with cooking and cleaning at his home. But the reassurances ring hollow in the face of his threats against Magul’s family. “I really don’t want him. If they make me go, I will kill myself,” Magul said, sobbing as she sat on the floor of her home. “I don’t want to leave my parents.” It’s a similar situation for a nine-member family in Ghor province that is selling two daughters aged 4 and 9. The father has no job, like most in the displacement camp – but he faces even tougher odds with a disability. “If we have food and there is someone to help us, we would never do this” Rokshana Grandmother He is prepared to sell the girls for 100,000 Afghanis (about $1,100) each. Zaiton, the 4-year-old, with wispy bangs and large brown eyes, said she knows why this is happening: “Because we are a poor family and we don’t have food to eat.” Their grandmother, Rokhshana, is distraught. “If we have food and there is someone to help us, we would never do this,” Rokhshana said through tears. “We don’t have any choice.” Zaiton, 4, plays with her brother at their home in Ghor province, Afghanistan. CNN International funding dried up Local Taliban leaders in Badghis say they plan to distribute food to stop families selling their daughters. “Once we implement this plan, if they continue to sell their kids we will put them in jail,” said Mawlawai Jalaludin, a spokesperson from the Taliban’s Justice Department, without elaborating. But the problem stretches beyond just Badghis. And as winter approaches, both the Taliban and humanitarian groups are pleading for more aid, hoping it could stem the rise in child marriages. The Taliban’s rapid takeover of Afghanistan as the United States and its allies withdrew prompted the international community to halt development assistance – money that had been vital in propping up the country’s economy and key services. It’s none of your business what I’m doing with her … that’s my business,’” Malik told CNN. The ominous warning weighs heavily on him as he considers the bleak days ahead. The cold is creeping in, and snow has already begun coating parts of the country. Always we’re told “it’s for the greater good” that we must accept the collateral deaths of the innocent as well as the guilty. Always it’s civilians that die in the greatest numbers like grass harvested or trampled underfoot. Modern wars are prosecuted to keep the powerful in power and to make the rich richer. Provoked or not the answer is always war. As often as not, they’re about oil, the removal of inconvenient uncooperative regimes, and the replacement with those deemed compliant. The rich and Powerful insist they act only to make the world a better, safer place. Is that right? Dreadful People All I see are piles of corpses, heaps of rubble and a world made more dangerous every day for the likes of you and me. I say the likes of US presidents W Bush, Clinton Bill, of course, and also Hillary and Obama are dreadful people with blood on their hands. So too past British Prime Minister Tony Blair, also dreadful, he and his little wizards lied about weapons of mass destruction in the arsenal of Saddam Hussein and then he and George Bush launched an illegal War. If you don’t believe me that that war was deemed illegal, then how about the word of Kofi Anan then Secretary General of the United Nations who said in 2004 “I have indicated that it’s not in accordance with the UN Charter” From our point of view and the UN Charter point of view the war was illegal. The world is littered with aging ghouls, bloody to their elbows but somehow hailed as “Statesmen.” Their cynical advice eagerly sought by their successors and in spite of the body counts, in spite of illegality, in spite of the deliberately fermented International instability, in spite of the revolving door between politics and the military-industrial complex that sees the suits serve their time in elected office declaring Wars and signing off on billion-dollar contracts to arms manufacturers before quitting the scenes of their crimes and taking up lucrative executive positions with the Boeings, Raytheons and Northrup Grummans of the world. Never are there consequences for any of them, not in this life at least. It’s not fingerprints that are left behind by the guilty parties, it’s news stories and sometimes even recordings of their voices calling for the necessary dirty work. No Consequences for the Dreadful People In early 2014 civil war broke out in the Donbass region of Ukraine after a US-backed coup d’etat cleared away the Russian favouring government in Kiev. Well in 2021 she was made under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, so that’s nice, for Victoria. The desiccating ghouls are everywhere. Former U.S. speaker Pelosi’s net worth has rocketed since the 2008 financial crisis. With the help of her husband’s lucrative stock trades, she’s one of the richest people in Congress, pocketing $140 million since the crash. And while she strenuously denies sharing information with her husband, venture capitalist Paul Pelosi. Pelosi many and angry have been the questions asked about trades made by Paul that just happened to coincide with major decisions by her Congress. They are Easy to Spot I say again that dreadful things keep happening because dreadful people are in charge and suffer no consequences. I also say those dreadful people are invariably cowards, which partly explains why they do those Dreadful things or at least stand by while dreadful events unfold. Cowards are easy to spot, just as dreadful people are easy to spot, just as weak people are easy to spot, for they’ll sacrifice actively or passively anyone and everyone they perceive as a threat to their position and burgeoning wealth. And so French Macron, Canadian Trudeau, and Kiwi Ardern, and more besides, keep stepping backwards while simultaneously nudging their populations forwards into harm’s Way. Johnson and The Wages of Sin Another British former Prime Minister Boris Johnson locked down the country in lockstep with all the rest. Leading to death and economic destruction on an unmeasured scale and pushed medical products that were, questionably, neither safe nor effective. Not even in terms of big Pharmas own self-regulating policies on millions of people, children included. He was the NATO bag carrier who scuppered hopes of an early peace deal in Ukraine like Blair, like the Clintons, like Obama, and the rest. He’s now on the luxury lecture circuit trousering a fortune along the way. The wages of sin, as it turns out, come in seven figures, or eight , well that’s my guess. They’ll tell us when there’s an international Health Emergency, and that could easily be on the grounds of their arguably questionable interpretation of the ‘climate crisis’. and if so what the likes of you and me have to do as a result, including being potentially locked down and ordered to submit to medical procedures? And will our Prime Minister, or any of our MPs act to ensure none of this is possible for the people of Britain? I suspect, at most, a shiver runs along the benches in the chamber of the palace of Westminster, desperately in search of a spine to run down one of two perhaps,…. …the usual honourable exceptions, thank you Andrew Bridgen, as always, stand in plaintive defence of ancient Liberty, but not enough, not nearly enough to prevent the inevitable hammering into place of the final nail in the coffin of our freedom. After the revolution, the new United States adopted a radically different economic system in which the government issued its own value-based money, so that private banks like the Bank of England were not siphoning off the wealth of the people through interest-bearing bank notes. The US Government actually took steps to keep the bankers out of the new government. But bankers are nothing if not dedicated to their schemes to acquire your wealth and know full well how easy it is to corrupt a nation’s leaders. First Bank of the United States Just one year after Mayer Amschel Rothschild had uttered his infamous “Let me issue and control a nation’s money and I care not who makes the laws“, the bankers succeeded in setting up a new Private Central Bank called the First Bank of the United States, largely through the efforts of the Rothschild’s chief US supporter, Alexander Hamilton. Founded in 1791, by the end of its twenty-year charter the First Bank of the United States had almost ruined the nation’s economy while enriching the bankers. Congress refused to renew the charter and signalled their intention to go back to a state-issued value-based currency on which the people paid no interest at all to any banker. This resulted in a threat from Nathan Mayer Rothschild against the US Government, “Either the application for renewal of the charter is granted, or the United States will find itself involved in a most disastrous war.” Congress still refused to renew the charter for the First Bank of the United States. The British Prime Minister at the time, Spencer Perceval was adamantly opposed to war with the United States. Spencer Perceval was assassinated and replaced by Robert Banks Jenkinson who was fully supportive of a war to recapture the colonies. Financed at virtually no interest by the Rothschild-controlled Bank of England, Britain then provoked the War of 1812 to recolonise the United States and force them back into the slavery of the Bank of England, or to plunge the United States into so much debt they would be forced to accept a new private central bank. And the plan worked. Even though the War of 1812 was won by the United States, Congress was forced to grant a new charter for yet another private bank issuing the public currency as loans at interest, the Second Bank of the United States. Second Bank of the United States Andrew Jackson succeeded in blocking the renewal of the charter for the Second Bank of the United States. Following the loss of its charter, the Second Bank of the United States tried to operate as a normal bank but failed after just 5 years. Two successive presidents opposed a private central bank, President Zachary Taylor and President James Buchanan. Both men were victims of poisoning. The first died and the second survived. When the Confederacy seceded from the United States, the bankers once again saw the opportunity for a rich harvest of debt and offered to fund Lincoln’s efforts to bring the South back into the union, but at 30% interest. Abraham Lincoln remarked that he would not free the black man by enslaving the white man to the bankers and using his authority as President, issued a new government currency, the greenback. This was a direct threat to the wealth and power of the central bankers, who quickly responded. In 1872 New York bankers sent a letter to every bank in the United States, urging them to fund newspapers that opposed government-issued money – Lincoln’s greenbacks. Goaded by the private bankers, much of Europe supported the Confederacy against the Union, with the expectation that victory over Lincoln would mean the end of the greenback. France and Britain considered an outright attack on the United States to aid the confederacy but were held at bay by Russia. Left free of European intervention, the Union won the war, and Lincoln announced his intention to go on issuing greenbacks. Following Lincoln’s assassination, the greenbacks were pulled from circulation and the American people were forced to go back to an economy based on bank notes borrowed at interest from the private bankers. With the end of Lincoln’s greenbacks, the US could no longer create its own interest-free money and was manipulated during the term of President Rutherford B. Hayes into borrowing from the Rothschilds’ banking system in 1878, restoring to the Rothschilds control of the US economy they had lost under Andrew Jackson. James A. Garfield was elected President in 1880 on a platform of government control of the money supply. Garfield was shot on 2 July 1881 and died of his wounds several weeks later. In 1896, William McKinley was elected President. He favoured gold-backed currencies and a balanced government budget which would free the public from accumulating debt. McKinley was shot by an out-of-work anarchist on 14 September 1901, succumbing to his wounds a few days later. Aldrich Plan In 1910, Senator Nelson Aldrich, Frank Vanderlip of National City (Citibank), Henry Davison of Morgan Bank, and Paul Warburg of the Kuhn, Loeb Investment House met secretly on Jekyll Island, Georgia, to formulate a plan for a US central bank, and created the Aldrich Plan, which called for a system of fifteen regional central banks, openly and directly controlled by Wall Street commercial banks. These banks would have the legal ability to create money out of thin air and represented an attempt to create a new Bank of the United States. Due to the intense public opposition to the Aldrich Plan, the measure was defeated in the House of Representatives in 1912. One year later the bankers would be back. Third Bank of the United States – The Federal Reserve In 1913, the Private Central Bankers of Europe – in particular the Rothschilds of Great Britain and the Warburgs of Germany – met with their American financial collaborators once again on Jekyll Island, Georgia to form a new banking cartel with the express purpose of forcing the United States to accept a private central bank, with the aim of placing complete control of the United States money supply once again under the control of private bankers. Owing to hostility over the previous banks, the name was changed from the Third Bank of the United States to “The Federal Reserve.” It is a privately owned bank, no more “Federal” than Federal Express. Later that same year, and apparently unwilling to risk another questionable amendment, Congress passed the Federal Reserve Act over the Christmas holiday in 1913, while members of Congress opposed to the measure were at home. President Woodrow Wilson signed it as he promised the bankers that he would in exchange for generous campaign contributions. The next year, World War One started, and it is important to remember that before the creation of the Federal Reserve, there was no such thing as a world war. World Wars World War I Although the war started between Austria-Hungary and Serbia, it quickly shifted to focus on Germany, whose industrial capacity was seen as an economic threat to Great Britain. Although pre-war Germany had a private central bank, it was heavily restricted and inflation kept to reasonable levels. Under government control, investment was guaranteed to internal economic development, and Germany was seen as a major power. So, in the media of the day, Germany was portrayed as the prime opponent of World War I. Following the Treaty of Versailles, a peace treaty ending the state of war between Germany and most of the allied powers, Germany was ordered to pay the war costs of all the participating nations, even though Germany had not actually started the war. This amounted to three times the value of all of Germany itself. Germany’s private central bank, to whom Germany had gone deeply into debt to pay the costs of the war, broke free of government control and massive inflation followed – mostly triggered by currency speculators – permanently trapping the German people in endless debt. World War II When the Weimar Republic collapsed economically, it opened the door for the National Socialists to take power. Their first financial move was to issue their own state currency which was not borrowed from private central bankers. Once again, Germany’s industrial output became a threat to Great Britain. Germany’s state-issued value-based currency was also a direct threat to the wealth and power of the private central banks. As early as 1933 they started to organise a global boycott against Germany to strangle this upstart ruler who thought he could break free of private central bankers. As had been the case in World War I, Great Britain and other nations threatened by Germany’s economic power looked for an excuse to go to war, and as public anger in Germany grew over the boycott, Hitler foolishly gave them that excuse. Bretton Woods Towards the end of World War II, when it became obvious that the allies were going to win and dictate the post-war environment, the major world economic powers met at Bretton Woods in July 1944 and hammered out the Bretton Woods agreement for international finance. The British Pound lost its position as the global trade and reserve currency to the US dollar (part of the price demanded by Roosevelt in exchange for the US entry into the war). Absent the economic advantages of being the world’s “go-to” currency, Britain was forced to nationalise the Bank of England in 1946. Executive Order 11110 President, John F. Kennedy understood the predatory nature of private central banking. He understood why Andrew Jackson fought so hard to end the Second Bank of the United States. So, Kennedy wrote and signed Executive Order 11110 which ordered the US Treasury to issue a new public currency, the United States Note. Five months later John F. Kennedy was assassinated and the United States Notes were pulled from circulation and destroyed. Kennedy’s EO 11110 has never been repealed and is still in effect, although no modern President dares to use it. Almost all of the current national debt has been created since 1963. Wilderness Zones and the Petrodollar The nations that ratified Bretton Woods did so on two conditions. One of the conditions was that the US dollar would always be convertible to gold at $35 per ounce. By 1966, the IMF estimated foreign central banks held $14 billion US dollars, however, the United States had only $3.2 billion in gold to redeem those paper notes. So, on 15 August 1971, Richard Nixon “temporarily” suspended the gold convertibility of the US Federal Reserve Notes. This move effectively ended Bretton Woods and many global currencies started to delink from the US dollar. Foreign nations began to get very nervous about their loans to the US and understandably were reluctant to loan any additional money to the United States without some form of collateral. So, Richard Nixon started the environmental movement, with the Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA”) and its various programs – such as “wilderness zones,” “roadless areas,” “heritage rivers” and “wetlands” – all of which took vast areas of public lands and made them off limits to the American people who were technically the owners of those lands. But Nixon had little concern for the environment and the real purpose of this land grab under the guise of the environment was to pledge those pristine lands and their vast mineral resources as collateral on the national debt. With open lands for collateral already in short supply, the US Government embarked on a new program to shore up sagging international demand for the dollar. The United States approached the world’s oil-producing nations, mostly in the Middle East, and offered them a deal. In exchange for only selling their oil for dollars, the United States would guarantee the military safety of those oil-rich nations. The oil-rich nations would agree to spend and invest their US paper dollars inside the US, in particular in US Treasury Bonds, redeemable through the slave labour of future generations of US taxpayers. The concept was labelled the “petrodollar.” In effect, the US, no longer able to back the dollar with gold, was now backing it with oil. Other peoples’ oil. And that necessity to keep control over those oil nations to prop up the dollar has shaped America’s foreign policy in the region ever since. Iraq, already hostile to the United States following Desert Storm, demanded the right to sell their oil for Euros in 2000. In 2002, the United Nations agreed to allow it under the “Oil for Food” programme. One year later the US re-invaded Iraq under the lie of Saddam’s nuclear weapons, lynched Saddam Hussein, and placed Iraq’s oil back on the world market only for US dollars. Over in Libya, Muammar Gaddafi had instituted a state-owned central bank and a value-based trade currency, the Gold Dinar. Gaddafi announced that Libya’s oil was for sale but only for the Gold Dinar. Other African nations, seeing the rise of the Gold Dinar and the Euro, even as the US dollar continued its inflation-driven decline, flocked to the new Libyan currency for trade. This move had the potential to seriously undermine the global hegemony of the dollar. So, the United States invaded Libya, brutally murdered Qaddafi, imposed a private central bank and returned Libya’s oil output to dollars only. The gold that was to have been made into the Gold Dinars, 144 tonnes of it, is, as of the last report, unaccounted for. Emails surfacing as part of the investigation into Hilary Clinton‘s use of a private email server for classified information confirmed that the real reason for the US invasion of Libya was to destroy the threat of the Gold Dinar becoming a pan-African currency, displacing the dollar. According to General Wesley Clark, the master plan for the “dollarification” of the world’s oil nations included seven targets, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Iran. Venezuela, which dared to sell its oil to China for the Yuan, is a late addition. What is notable about the original seven nations targeted by the US is that none of them are members of the Bank for International Settlements, the private central bankers’ private central bank located in Switzerland. This meant that these nations were deciding for themselves how to run their nations’ economies rather than submit to the international private banks.

Oteil Burbridge is an American multi-instrumentalist, specializing on the bass guitar, trained in playing jazz and classical music from an early age. He has achieved fame primarily on bass guitar during the resurgence of the Allman Brothers Band from 1997 through 2014, and as a founding member of the band Dead & Company. Burbridge was also a founding member of The Aquarium Rescue Unit and Tedeschi Trucks Band, with whom his brother Kofi Burbridge was the keyboardist and flautist. He has worked with other musicians including Bruce Hampton, Trey Anastasio, Page McConnell, Bill Kreutzmann and Derek Trucks.

Edwin H. Kramer (born 19 April 1942) is a British recording producer and engineer. He has collaborated with several artists now in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, including Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles, David Bowie, the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton, the Kinks, Kiss, John Mellencamp, and Carlos Santana, as well as records for other well-known artists in various genres, including Anthrax, Joe Cocker, Loudness, Peter Frampton, John Mayall, Ten Years After, Mott the Hoople, John Sebastian, Carly Simon, Dionne Warwick, Small Faces, Sir Lord Baltimore and Whitesnake.
