Ben Moore Aura Semi-gloss Review. Klappenberger & Son
https://klappenbergerandson.com/ben-moore-aura-worth-the-money/
Before you drop $75.00 on a gallon of premium paint, shouldn’t you know if Ben Moore Aura is worth it Let’s take a look at seven critical factors.
Ben Moore Aura Paint can
Is it:
Zero VOC
Low Splatter
Water Clean-up
Can it be matched to any color?
Mildew resistant
It uses Genex colors that resist fading with extra UV protection.
Beautiful finish
At $75.00 a gallon, is Ben Moore Arura worth it?
Evaluation # 1. Coverage?
Ben Moore Aura is known for its coverage. It is probably its most significant selling point. It is thick and has great first coverage capabilities.
I have used Arura for at least 15 years and have always found it to cover better than any other latex semi-gloss. With that said, most time, it will still need a second coat.
However, if the new color is close, and you don’t mind a couple of holidays (light spots), one coat might work.
is Ben Moore Aura Worth the money? Yes if you are looking for coverage. this shows excellent coverage
Grade: Coverage 10 out of 10
My rule of thumb is to give a 10 out of 10 if the paint covers in 2 coats. The Arura semi-gloss does that and more!
Evaluation #2. Workability
You will have little problems working with BM Arura semi. It glides on very easily, and I can get around 36-40″ out of one dip of the brush. Which is exceptionally good. If the paint can spread 28-32″, I give it a 10 out of 10. This exceeds that that by plenty.

Workability Grade 10 out of 10
Evaluating its Touch-up ability
I did not paint Arura Semi-gloss on the walls where the light shines in such a way to expose the faintest touch-up spots. But I could not find that applying an additional coat changed the sheen of the paint. I touched up numerous places and found the sheen uniform throughout.
Painting walls with a semi-gloss has gone out of style. When it is done, it is mostly to get maximum washability.
Touch-Up Grade 10 Out of 10
If washability is your number one concern, then my answer to the question of “Is Ben Moore Aura worth it” not for washing.
Is Ben Moore Aura Worth it? Washability is an important factor.
The washability of the Aura did not do very well compared to other premium paints. We applied:
catsup
mustard
pencil
crayon
red wine (Merlot)
coffee (dark roast)
and allowed the stains to dry for 24 hours.
is Ben Moore Aura Worth the money? not if you are looking for a durable paint
The soiled areas were cleaned with;
Krud Kutter
Spray Nine
Simple Green
Orange Cleaner
Bleach and water solution
All of the stains came off after a couple of minutes using a micro-fiber cloth. There were just two problems. First, the paint got very soft and sticky. Second, the paint scratched off with my fingernail.
I do the same test with all the 21 other paints, and only three other products have this issue.
Sherwin Williams Emerald Gloss
Ben Moore Regals Select Semi-Gloss
Ben Moore Ben Semi-Gloss
My guess is when you make a paint zero VOC; you take some of the necessary ingredients out to make a paint washable and durable. I prefer to see low VOC on a paint can unless the customer is pregnant or has special health circumstances.
Washability Grade: 8 out of 10
scratching Aura semi-gloss off wall with fingernail
Durability
The durability of the paint does soften with the cleaning. The stickiness was not subtle. However, if I did not purposely scratch the paint, it would not have come off. Also, once the cleaning surfaces dried, the paint went back to its hard, smooth finish.
Durability Grade 9 out of 10
When cleaners are not applied, the finish is hard, smooth durable. I had no problem wiping off stains with mild dishwasher detergent. However, the house cleaners did soften up the paint if the chemical were left on for a couple of minutes.
To answer the question, “Is Ben Moore Aura worth it?”
My answer may surprise you. Because Arura semi-gloss best quality is its coverage, I would use if:
I was selling the house and wanted to try and change the trim color in one coat.
I had smooth-finished wood doors (not Masonite wood grain doors).
Interior columns and pillars
Smooth woodwork surfaces
Walls – only if you were trying to get away with one coat. It would have to be a slight color change.
When you want the paint to self-level.
Bathroom trim painted with Ben Moore Arura Semi-gloss. It looks nice!
Where I would NOT recommend using Arura Semi-gloss
Kitchen cabinets – due to its weakness in the washability
2. Bookcases – Ben Moore Advance, C2 Cabinet Grade Paint would be better choices
3. Walls – if you are planning on applying two coats.

Ben Moore Semi-gloss Review by Klappenberger & Son
Ben Semi-gloss is an interesting paint. It is moderately priced at around $35.00. The pros of this paint are its coverage, and it does have a nice feel to it.
The negatives are it is difficult to work with. I was only able to spread one dip of the brush about 14-16". I consider a good paint to be more like 24" of spread with one dip of a brush.
The lack of workability means extended time painting and possible fatigue.
Washability is poor.

A pros Review of Duration
Duration Satin Finish is a premium paint from Sherwin Williams.
It is well known for its moisture resistance and its durability. Because of these qualities, it is ideal for kitchens and bathrooms, and other high traffic areas.
It is a moderately expensive paint. Its sale price is $52.00, and it retails for $70.00
About the judge and jury
My name is David Klappenberger, and I am the founder of Klappenberger & Son. I was a painting contractor for over 30 years, and now I am the franchisor of Klappenberger & Son.
I will be evaluating the paint by looking at the Price + Coverage + Washability + Touch-up + Self Priming + Durability + Workability = Value.
Coverage of Cashmere Low-Luster
Duration did not cover any better Promar 200 Eggshell. That was disappointing. If you wanted to avoid applying a second coat, Duration is not your best option. Sherwin Williams Cashmere covers better ($45-$62.00), and Emerald has even better coverage than Cashmere! Unfortunately, Emerald Retails for $92.00 per gallon, so prepare to pay.
Even though I wasn't impressed with the first coat coverage, it was easily covered in two coats. If any paint covers a different color in two coats, it automatically gets a 10.
Grade 10 out of 10
Workability of Duration Satin
Duration Satin paint glided over the primer and itself with ease. When the second coat was applied, there was no difference in workability.
I was able to easily able to cut-in the wall for about 35-40" with one generous dip of the paintbrush. Few paints have better workability unless you move up to the most expensive paints.
The paint is a pleasure to work with.
Grade: 10 out of 10
Washability & Durability: Duration Satin
We applied the Duration and allowed it to cure for 14 days before we applied the list of items below:
• Mustard
• Catsup
• Pencil
• Red Wine (French Bordeaux)
• Coffee
• Crayon
The products listed above dried on the wall for about 2 full days.
Results - Duration Satin has a very durable finish. It can withstand cleaning detergents such as Krud Kutter, Simple Green, Spray Nine, and Orange Cleaner.
All of the stains were removed, and there was no damage to the paint. No Paint came off, and the sheen was not altered after about 3 minutes of cleaning with a microfilter cloth.
Washability Grade 10 out of 10
Durability 10 out of 10
Duration Satin Notes
Sheen
The sheen on this paint is duller than most satin finish paints. In my opinion, it could have been labeled an eggshell paint.
Also, the paint's feel is closer to shark skin than a smooth enamel hard shell finish. I because of its texture, I would not recommend this paint for trim. I think this is much better suited for walls in high traffic areas that need durability and washability.
Touch-up
Other than flat and matte finish paints, most do not touch-very well. Duration Satin can be touched up as long as the wall does not run parallel with windows. Tall foyers and long walls may show a sheen difference from where it was touched up to where it was not. If you are more inclined to touch-up your walls than clean them, the price might not make this the best choice. Other paints like Promar 200, Cashmere, PPG Speedhide may be better options.
Self Priming
I did not need to apply primer over the spackle spots before painting the Duration Satin. Avoiding this step saves time and money.

Is Emerald Urethane a Good Paint?
Let's start with the cost of Emerald Urethane Semi-gloss.
Sherwin Williams Emerald is a premium grade urethane paint that retails for $92.00. Our painters like the paint and are always glad to see it on the job site. But at $92.00, when is the right time to splurge, and what exactly are you getting for $92.00.
With over 30 years of experience in the painting industry, I have tested this paint and would like to share my professional opinion of Emerald Urethane Semi-gloss.
A few notes:
• Zero VOC paint
• Comes in 3 sheens, satin, semi-gloss, and gloss.
• It can be tinted to any color.
• It is both an interior and exterior paint.
• Water clean-up
• It has some similar properties to oil paint.
• Dries quickly
• Can be recoated in 4 hours.
• Click here for a coupon of $66.49 per gallon.
My Opinion of Emerald Urethane Semi-gloss.....Coverage
In my professional opinion of Emerald Urethane Semi-gloss, the coverage was good, not great. It did not cover as well as other premium paints such as Ben Moore Arura.
However, Ben Moore Aura Semi-gloss best feature is its coverage.
When two coats are brushed or rolled, Emerald Urethane Semi-gloss covers easily even when changing colors.
Coverage Grade 8 out 0f 10
Workability
In my opinion, the Emerald Urethane Semi-gloss has great workability, but all premium paints have excellent workability except Regal Semi-gloss by Ben Moore.
The Emerald Urethane glides on easily and effortlessly. I was able to get 32-38" of linear coverage from on dip of the brush. Also, the second coat glides on equally as easy as the first.
Workability Grade 10 out of 10
Touch-up
The Emerald Urethane Semi-gloss touches- up very well. I could not detect how a third coat changed the sheen. I did notice that the smoothness of the wood increased with each coat but not the sheen.
Touch-Up Grade 10 out of 10
Is Emerald Urethane Washable and Durable?
This is where this paint really shines. I applied:
• Catsup
• Mustard
• Red Wine
• Coffee
• Pencil
• Crayon
and allowed it to dry for 24 hours.
Mustard and red wine stains have been the most stubborn stains to be removed. Fortunately, all the stains were removed using Krud Kutter and a microfiber cloth.
Emerald Urethane Semi-gloss seems to have a barrier that prevents the stains from grabbing hold.
In my professional opinion of Emerald Urethane Semi-gloss, it gets an easy 10 out of 10 for washability and durability.
Self Priming
Typically, my self-priming test is to paint the product directly over spackle and see if there is any sheen difference after a few coats. But for this test, I painted the Emerald Urethane directly over oil gloss paint and gloss oil polyurethane. In both cases, Emerald grabbed on to the surfaces. The polyurethane was sanded, but the gloss oil paint was not! This is a great accomplishment from the chemist at Sherwin Williams. Having a paint stick over a glossy oil paint without even sanding is unique indeed.
Self Priming Grade: 10 out of 10
Value and Final Thoughts of Emerald Urethane Semi-gloss
For a retail price of $92.00, this paint better is amazing, and in many respects, it is. It's so easy to apply that it almost jumps out of the can. If this were a $30.00 paint, I would give the coverage a 10 out of 10, but it's not. However, when it comes to workability, washability, durability, self-priming, and touch-up. Emerald Urethane Semi-gloss is as good as any.
It also has one other positive feature; it self-levels very well. Not the best I have ever seen, C2 Cabinet paint and Eco by Fine Paints of Europe surpass have better self-leveling. But better than Ben Moore Regal, PPG Manor Hall Semi-Gloss. To be fair, Regal and Manor Hall are half the cost.
The overall finish:
The feel of the paint is not glassy or extra smooth. It feels to me like sharkskin. PPG Manor Hall, Regal, Aura, and even Ben Semi-gloss all have a much smoother surface.
Where to use:
Smooth Woodwork where washability and self-leveling is important. In my opinion of Emerald Urethane Semi-gloss would be great for:
• Doors
• Door jams
• Windows
• Wanes Cote
• Exterior Trim
• Shutters
• Bookcases
• Painting over oil paint
Not my first choice but still good:
• Kitchen Cabinets Why? It could have better self-leveling capabilities and to feel.
• Mantle Why? I like a mantle that is super smooth.
• Walls Why? To expensive. Other options for half the cost would be Duration Satin.
When NOT to buy:
• Selling your home
• rental properties
• where washability/ durability / and self-leveling are not necessary.
In my opinion, the Emerald Urethane Semi-gloss has excellent value.
Just being able to be an interior and exterior paint can be a great benefit. It also has everything that you would want in a paint.
It does come with an expensive price tag between $66.00 - $92.00, but there is a lot of upsides if you need what this paint offers.
Overall Value 8.5

A Professional Review of Sherwin Williams Cashmere Low Luster
Is Cashmere Low-Luster a Good Value? Yes, and here's why.
Cashmere Low-Luster is a quality paint that is often overlooked by both painting contractors and DIYers.
To determine if Cashmere Low-Luster we will be looking at its:
Price + Coverage + Washability + Touch-up + Self Priming + Durability = Value
Cashmere Low-Luster $$$
The price point of this paint is $45.00 (sale)- $60.00 (retail price).
You may not have ever heard of this paint, but it is not new. Cashmere Paint has been on the shelves at Sherwin Williams since_______.
Most Painting Contractors will either suggest a paint above Cashmere or below it.
Cashmere covered easily in two coats going over this white color.
Grade 10 out of 10
Workability of Cashmere Low-Luster
Cashmere Low Luster paint glided over the primer and itself with ease. When the second coat was applied, there was no difference.
I was able to easily able to cut-in the wall for about 24-30" with one dip of the paintbrush. There are few paints that have better workability unless you move up to the most expensive paints.
Also, keep in mind that the further you can go with one dip of a brush or with a roller, the more productive you will be. Furthermore, it is a likely indication that the paint itself will cover more square feet per gallon, and possibly reduce the amount of paint you will need.
Grade: 10 out of 10
Washability & Durability: Cashmere Low-Luster
We allowed a full 2 weeks to cure before we applied various "high staining" foods and drinks on the wall. The stains were left on the wall for approximately 8 hours.
• Mustard
• Catsup
• Pencil
• Red Wine (French Bordeaux)
• Coffee
• Crayon
Cashmere Low Luster - has a very durable finish. It feels like a hard shell, like a semi-gloss but has the sheen of an eggshell.
Cleaning results of Cashmere Low-Luster - Typically, mustard and catsup stains are the most difficult to remove, but it was the red wine stains that held on ever so slightly.
The walls were cleaned with:
• Krud Kutter
• Simple Green
• Spray Nine
• and wiped with a microfiber cloth.
Washability Grade 9 out of 10
Durability: Cashmere Low Luster
Question: How well does the Cashmere Low-Luster hold up after it has been cleaned? Are there any scars, burnishing, or alterations to the paint?
Answer: No. Cashmere Low-Luster held up perfectly.
Durability 10 out of 10
Cashmere Low Luster Review and conclusion
Touch-up
If you are more likely to touch-up
Cashmere Low-Luster as opposed to cleaning it,
touching-up can be an important consideration.
Cashmere Low-Luster did not touch up very well.
Perhaps you can see the two squares in this picture
where I went back and rolled the third coat in
two small areas. The solution is to paint from top to
bottom, and or from corner to corner as opposed to
just painting the needed areas. After a few years,
it futile to try to touch up anyway.
Self Priming
I was successful in skipping the primer and applying the Cashmere Low-Luster paint directly over the spackled spots with issues. Typically, you will find a sheen difference. The sheen will be sucked into the spackle like a black hole.
Cashmere Low-Luster is an underrated paint. It performs as well as most paints that can cost 50-100% more. In the past, the workability of the paint was an issue. Like most paints, it has been reformulated to meet stricter state requirements. Besides th
