12 Hours of Darkness PART 2 - Military Surplus LBE, Wool Blanket, MRE
I return to #Camp Coyote to overnight packing my #militarysurplus LBE belt (load bearing equipment), MOLLE pouches (modular light-weight load-carrying equipment), wool blanket and an MRE. It is inclimate winter weather with sleet and freezing rain early and temperatures drop close to freezing over night. Firewood is a crucial component to keeping warm once the day is gone. I gather a lot of wood and make a #bushcraft chair for the shelter. It was a struggle to stay awake to keep the fire going all night and the quality of wood was not up to par. Having more hard wood would have made things better.
I found myself counting the hours until first light. I remember thinking "This is like 12 hours of darkness.....7 pm to 7 am. The cold and fatigue probably had an effect on my judgement, nevertheless, I made it through.
There were sounds of wildlife in the darkness as I did what was needed to survive the cold night. I wanted to prove to myself that I could make it all night with no sleep and no warm sleeping bag or sleep mat. It was a good learning experience and after all, I just enjoy being in the woods.

Winter Creek Fishing Adventure with Danny Angler
#bass #fishing #angler
My friend Daniel, aka (Danny Angler), and I set out to do some fishing on a secluded creek that empties into the river. The creek looked to have some very nice deep pools and we were certain that we would catch our share of fish. Daniel brought everything needed for fish tacos, however, the cold may have played a factor in us not catching anything on the first day. Fishing in the winter months can be tricky and you have to know where the fish are and sometimes they are just not there. Daniel has a lot of experience under his belt and I was fortunate to have been taught some of the ropes of fishing.
We were very disappointed that our catch and cook plans ended with no fish at all. A big fat goose egg (0). The next day we try our luck on the Elkin Creek right in downtown and were determined to catch anything. As for myself, one fish would be satisfying enough knowing that I finally popped that fish cherry. Well....IT HAPPENED!!! and I was beside myself. Excited beyond words as you will see. Maybe I just had a bit of luck. I am definitely HOOKED on fishing now. I only wish that Daniel had caught one too. Not to worry...there will be plenty more fish and plenty more videos to come.
I hope you enjoy this creek fishing adventure

Snugpak Basecamp Ops TSB Sleeping Bag - Review/Test
Today we take a look at the Snugpak Basecamp Ops TSB sleeping bag. After using this bag for nearly a year I finally test the bag in cold temperatures solely by itself to see if it stands up to the ratings given to it by the manufacturer. We are at the basecamp where I tend to spend a lot of time practicing #bushcraft, testing #outdoorgear and #camping outdoors.
In this video I go over some of the troubles that I have found with this sleeping bag and then put it to the test with overnight temperatures in the mid 30's F. If you are considering purchasing this sleeping bag, I hope this video is helpful.

BURNWOOD BUSHCRAFT 4.2 - Spicy Ramen / Flint and Steel
#spicynoodles #ramen #flintandsteel
Today we are hanging out at the base camp. I always enjoy the times spent at my little oasis in the woods behind my house. I love this shelter, even more so after renovating it. The link to that video:
This time the fire starting method of choice is flint and steel, using the Esee Firesteel. For lunch I have a bowl of spicy Ramen noodles called Fire Wok. I love spicy food and couldn't wait to see what kind of heat it brought. The noodles had a good flavor and definitely ramped up the heat but was nothing that I couldn't handle. I think it's fun to sweat and cry it out hahaha. The heat opens up all you senses and gets your motor running. SO FUN!
This is the final video of 2020 on BURNWOOD BUSHCRAFT. Big things are coming to the channel in 2021 and it will start off with a bang!
I hope you enjoy this SPICY lunch in the woods. Thanks for watching!

Camping Overnight in an Old Abandoned Homestead
I am very fortunate to have been allowed to explore, play and camp on private land for the past three years. The sixty acre parcel is owned by my Dad's cousin. The land has been in her family for at least one hundred years and then some. That explains why I see junk and continue to find it in the woods. I have walked by the old #abandoned #homestead countless times and have never bothered to explore it because of a vulture family that nests in the upper loft. In recent weeks I haven't seen the vultures in or near the building. It was time to seize the opportunity to get in an overnighter and do some winter #camping.
I construct a bushcraft style raised bed, or bench, out of piles of scrap lumber that I found. Also, I built a little table that worked out as a nice spot for my Helikon-Tex Matilda backpack to sit. I was very concerned about having a campfire under the shed but managed to safely have a fire with no issues. It was very cool to discover the old tools and vintage soda cans and bottles. The place just smelt old and the firewood I found smelt even worse when burning. Smoke lingered under the shed and made me cough a lot. I eventually kept to the side away from the fire until the fire burned down to nothing but coals. A good night sleep in my US Military gortex bivvy and Snugpak sleeping bag led to a crisp, cold morning where I moved camp from the building to the woods.
Once I laid down for bed, If you listen closely over the hot coals, you can hear the howls from a pack of coyotes off in the distance. They were probably missing me down at Camp Coyote.
It was still a great time despite the old stinky wood and smoke issues. Sometimes a guy is just better off in the woods!
I hope you enjoy this adventure in the old homestead barn.
Thanks for watching!
