NASA invited the public to submit ideas for a new space suit waste management system that could handle up to six days of human waste, while still providing a comfortable and safe environment for the astronauts. The winning design was a system called the "MACES Perineal Access & Toileting System," which was tested in a zero-gravity environment and is now being considered for use on future NASA missions. Finally, NASA is also responsible for developing many of the technologies that we use in our everyday lives, including memory foam (originally developed to cushion astronaut seats), solar panels (originally developed for use in space), and water filtration systems (originally developed for use on the International Space Station).
