Full recording: Julian Assange appears in U.S. court
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange appeared in U.S. court on Wednesday and pleaded guilty to obtaining and publishing U.S. military secrets in violation of the Espionage Act. The plea was part of a deal which secured his freedom.
Assange left a UK prison earlier this week and flew to Saipan in the Northern Mariana Islands, a U.S. commonwealth in the western Pacific. After pleading guilty, Judge Ramona V Manglona sentenced him to time served.
The court appearance took place in Saipan because of Assange's opposition to traveling to the U.S. mainland, as well as the island's proximity to his home country, Australia. After sentencing, Assange flew to Australia.
This audio recording has not been edited and reflects the entirety of Julian Assange's court appearance.

North Korea detains U.S. soldier who illegally crossed border
North Korea has detained a U.S. citizen who illegally crossed the border while taking part in a tour of the Truce Village in the demilitarized zone separating the two Koreas.
Private Travis King was stationed in South Korea but was recently taken into custody after an altercation with locals. On Monday, he was escorted to Incheon International Airport to face disciplinary action in the U.S., but those escorting him were not allowed to go beyond the customs checkpoint.
After entering the airport's secure area, he failed to go to his gate and instead joined a tour group heading to the demilitarized zone. While there, he reportedly was hearing saying "ha ha ha" before running across the border. He was then taken into custody by North Korean soldiers.

Bodycam: Woman slammed to the ground, pepper sprayed after filming LA deputies
Two Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies are being investigated after a woman was slammed to the ground and pepper sprayed after trying to film her husband being detained. Both officers have been re-assigned from field duty pending further administrative review.
Bodycam footage from the incident was released on July 4, 2023.
The incident happened on Saturday, June 24, 2023, when Lancaster Sheriff’s Station deputies responded to a report of an in-progress robbery at a grocery store in the 700 block of West Avenue K-4 in the city of Lancaster, Los Angeles County, California.
Upon arrival, deputies approached a man and a woman who, according to the sheriff's department, matched the description given by store security personnel in calls placed to 911.
As deputies attempted to detain the man, his wife attempted to film what was happening. This is when one of the officers tried to grab her phone before taking her arm and taking her to the ground.
As the woman tries to get up, the officer pepper sprays her before putting her in handcuffs. Meanwhile, the woman's husband pleads with officers to stop.
"An objective review of the incident will be conducted to determine if the force used was reasonable, necessary, appropriate, and proportional to the level of actions described," the sheriff's department said in a statement, calling the video "disturbing."
"We take the use of force very seriously and are determined to establish the facts of the incident," the statement added.
