TWO MINUTE TEACHER - RETELL A STORY WITH ROCK PAINTING
Improve reading comprehension using creativity. Children listen to a picture book fiction story. Using paint, paintbrushes, smooth stones, paper, crayons, and pencils they will retell the story they heard in the correct order.
The child listens to the story being read. Adult asks who the characters are, what they are doing, why they are doing these things, and how the story ends.
The child plans how to paint the story on rocks. Ask the child to paint the rocks and place them in the correct order.
After the rocks are dry, ask the child to retell the story to you.
Display the rocks on a shelf. From time to time, ask the child to retell the story or the child may ask friends or family to retell the story back to him.

HOW TO SET UP A MINI-LESSON IN TWO MINUTES - Alphabetizing the States
Materials: Worksheet from my Pinterest board
https://www.pinterest.com/pin/3765432...
You can download the answer key from www.education.com if you are short on time.
This activity is best for grades three and up,. For younger children, you might want to have them identify the state they live in and those next to it by looking at a map.
PROCEDURE: Remind your student to begin with letter A. The first answer, Alabama is filled in. Search for other states with the letter A. Go on to the second letter. Alaska also begins with Al. The third letter is also A. Alaska comes next in alphabetical order. Continue with A. Two states begin with Ar. I comes before K so Arizona is next, followed by Arkansas. No more states with A. None begin with B. Move on with C and continue down the alphabet.
For special needs students or reluctant learners, break up the activity into several sessions. When finished label the states and color the map.
Keep the map in a notebook as a reference for state names and geography lesson.

WHY BOTH CHILDREN AND ADULTS NEED TO KNOW HISTORY
When we are born, become a character in history. Although we have no knowledge of what came before, we are instantly a part of the human story. We have an obligation to find out how we arrived at the point we are today. History is not merely a record of events that occurred in the past, but a story of real people, real lives, and stories of everyday families. When we see how we fit into that story, we develop empathy, moral understanding, and critical thinking skills to assess conflicting opinions. Their past decisions might not have seem correct to us in modern times, but history is evolutionary and changes as people and technology learn from the past and make new and better decisions in the future.
