improvisational loop jam from a 2023 summer project, recorded on September 7th, 2023 (apologies for the slightly-out-of-tune bass) ...

clone cover of "Out Of My Mind" (Trousdale)
attempt at doing a "live" instrumental cover of the title track off Trousdale's new album, Out Of My Mind (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCSFWNIpEek)
the whole album is really good overall, but this song in particular stood out to me the first time I heard it; the melody of the chorus is haunting, in an absolutely lovely way, and the chord progression of the prechorus really amps up the energy leading into that hook.
i tried to do a fairly straightforward cover, attempting to capture the dynamic swells, the rise and falls of intensity, and it was a really fun template to follow, allowing for just a smidge of chaos towards the end. i had tried to record trumpet for the breakdown and ending as well, but it was pretty weak and didn't make the cut. i simply don't have the lip muscles anymore. i put a slight chorus filter on the trumpet parts to help make the tone more palatable. i used a looper pedal with the keyboards for a couple sections, which was risky since I was playing to a steady click (138 bpm), but it worked out for the most part.
in hindsight, it would have been clever to change my bandanas to match the color-coding that the Trousdale trio utilizes in their attire and album art. dang hindsight.
this is my swan song for playing the trumpet I think. onto the saxophone next! hopefully ;)

a song-in-the-making. this tune was sculpted/formulated by jamming over a click at 120 bpm, in drop Eb tuning on the bass. the structure has been solidified over the course of several months.

soundcheck of the day. the loop was a little off, slightly too quick, but it worked out.
there's a cool line in here right before the end that could be bookmarked for later use.

0913 prj004 ; 12 bar blues jam
according to youtube, the audio here is 'copyright-protected content'. "You Got To Pay" is allegedly the song that I am using in this video. the greed is palpable with a title like that.
this is simply a 12 bar blues jam, with the help of a looper pedal to serve as the rhythm track, as I noodle around on top.

just a chill jam with a looper pedal as the basis.
there's a cool melody hook about 90 seconds in, though i failed to harmonize with it properly. could be cool to craft this into a proper tune.

0824 cover of the last third of Trinity (Snarky Puppy) plus a spontaneous jam
this was an attempt at covering the ending of Trinity by Snarky Puppy (https://youtu.be/CSiLPkUopBg?si=RyPKgGgf5j8Ovy6y&t=331)
That horn line from Trinity infected my brain when I first heard it, and the only cure was learning the whole thing. The looper pedal helped make this section feasible to recreate, and was a major asset in working out the complicated horn line. I used a metronome to make the primary loop, and left that faintly in the mix in the beginning for posterity.
I'm going to definitely try this one again sometime, it could be a lot tighter, and it’s a whole lot of fun to play over. I sort of tried to cover Bill Laurance's solo from the Snarky Puppy recording, but without the modulation effect (and a better handle on his actual solo) it was difficult to recreate. I’ll probably try to do a simpler, more original thing next time.
For the bass part, I did not stick to the established line at all, and sort of meandered all the over place. It was interesting exploring the different notes, as the chord progression skipped around so much, there was a number of ‘wrong’ and ‘right’ notes where I was not expecting. I should still probably learn the actual line for next time.
And then I went into a random jam at the end of it, because that groove has a crazy amount of momentum to it. I like the idea of using tunes like this as a launching pad to go into a completely spontaneous jam, and I might try to do this more often, to explore where the trajectory takes me each time.

0824 prj001 soundcheck - cover of Amazonia (Kalabi)
soundcheck of the day, covering the new-ish tune Amazonia by Kalabi (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FymTtMi-PrQ).
I missed a key part of the tune, with the arpeggiations, there's a cool harmony I neglected to incorporate. Still came out decent, using a simple looper pedal. I used a metronome to make the primary loop, and left that faintly in the mix in the beginning for posterity.

0822 - (Crawling) In The Grass - a casual mashup
mashup of:
"In The Grass" by The Flashbulb
+
"Crawling" by Linkin Park
towards the end, i noticed a weird glitch going on with the speakers, cutting in and out at the same points in the song, yet nothing showed up in the recordings. i'm not sure how that happened. hence i'm calling it a glitch in the matrix.
