Chapora Fort: History
Overlooking River Chapora, the fort is one of the most ancient historical structures in Goa. Legend has it that the fort has seen many rulers after the Portuguese captured Bardez. While the structure that exists today was rebuilt in 1717 by the Portuguese colonists, the fort’s history dates to the Adil Shah dynasty. The site, which was then called Shahpura, had a fort built by Sultan Mohammed Adil Shah of Bijapur. The structure served as a watch post for Muslim rulers.
However, after the Adil Shah dynasty fell in Goa, Portuguese colonists took control of the area, rebuilt the existing structure, and named it Chapora Fort. The Portuguese used the fort to defend their territories against Maratha rulers. They also built some underground channels inside the fort that served as escape routes during emergencies.
Chapora Fort was seized by the Marathas many times during the Portuguese rule of 150 years. It was reportedly conquered twice during the reign of Shambhaji Bhosle, the son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. However, the Portuguese conquered the fort again from the Marathas and ruled over it until 1892, before abandoning it for good. In 1961, when the Portuguese left Goa, Chapora Fort passed into Indian hands.
Chapora Fort: Today
Although the fort is in ruins now, its impressive history, undeniable majestic charm and scenic location near the sea make it one of the most loved tourist attractions in Goa. It is a popular vantage point for nature lovers and is frequented by history and architecture buffs alike. A major part of the fort’s outer walls and ramparts still exist.
Chapora Fort: Architecture
Built using irregular laterite rocks and stones, the fort showcases a unique kind of architecture. The fortification walls along the edge or outline of the higher slopes were kept steep and slanting to prevent enemies from climbing and entering the fort. The main entry gate is also a small and narrow one, again to prevent the enemy army from entering the fort easily.
During the Portuguese rule, the fort also housed a church dedicated to St Anthony, but it has disappeared now. Chapora Fort reportedly had bastions, barracks and quarters for guards as well. However, only the ruins of some of these structures remain today.
Things to See in Chapora Fort
The fort is located on a hilltop, so once you reach the site, you can enjoy breath-taking views of Vagator Beach, Ozran Beach and Morjim Beach.
The fort also offers mesmerising views of River Chapora.
Chapora Fort’s sunset view is beautiful. In fact, the fort is counted among the best places in Goa to witness sunsets.
There are wide walls with ramparts, so you can walk on these ramparts and explore the fort.
History buffs will love to spot murder holes, gun ports and arrow slits on the walls of the fort.
When exploring the ruins, you will also see the entry points of underground tunnels or emergency routes that the Portuguese built to escape enemies.
How to Reach Chapora Fort
Goa enjoys good air, rail and road connectivity, so you can reach the state choosing any suitable mode of transportation. If you are taking a flight, Goa International Airport is about 46 km from Chapora Fort. Thivim Railway Station (19 km away) is the nearest option for those reaching by train. Taxis, buses and auto-rickshaws are commonly used for travelling within the state.
The fort can be easily reached from any part of Goa with the help of taxis, buses and auto-rickshaws. Chapora Fort is about 10 km from Mapusa and local buses running from Mapusa to Vagator Beach stop near the fort as well. Once you are near Chapora Fort, a small path will take you to the base of the hill. The fort is perched on top of this hill, so you need to climb a steep path for about 10 minutes to cover the distance.
Lesser-Known Facts about Chapora Fort
Here are some lesser-known facts about Chapora Fort, Goa:
The fort was constructed over the remnants of an ancient Muslim structure. The southern slopes of the hills still feature some Muslim tombstones.

The Double Statue of Mephistopheles & Margaretta : Salar Jung Museum
Children Gallery
The objects on display in the Children’s section of the museum are a testimony to the vast range of interests of Salar Jung III in collecting objects of assorted nature. The objects assimilated by him during his childhood are also on view in this gallery. The exhibits housed in the section provide informational education to children who come to visit the gallery.
The gallery has a good number of bronze figures, porcelain objects, musical boxes, marble sculptures and toys from different parts of the world. Geisha dolls from Japan, a functional train-set from England and a set of the seven dwarfs from ‘Snow White and the seven dwarfs’ are a some of the assortments seen in this section. The gallery not only attracts the youth but also the elderly, a huge collection of toy soldiers arranged to give the viewer a fair idea of warfare during the Second World War. Apart from artillery and infantry, the gallery has toys depicting the Air-force, tanks and medical staff.
Exquisitely modelled wild animals in bronze and metal such as Elephants, Rhinos, Tiger etc. are displayed. Clay models of domesticated animals, soap-stone carvings from Korea and Japan, objects decorated with Mother-of-pearl, sculptures depicting the different breed of dogs in metal and porcelain are found in the gallery.
The collection of fire arms at the museum is rare and varied
The first weapons used by the Stone Age man were knives, axes, spears fitted with sharpened flints. Around 1300 BC iron swords and shields showed up. Cavalry first appeared in about 1300 AD on the battle fields of western Asia and the horse man, armed with sword and lance could run down the infantry easily.
Challenge to the supremacy of Cavalry came first, from long bow and next, cross bow and next, fire arms which date from 1326 A.D. The first firing mechanism was matchlock, introduced in the 15th century. It gave way, in 17th century, to the flint lock, in general use until 1840. Muskets with rifled barrels came in 19th century. With the invention of percussion cap (a small copper cap or cylinder) which also made possible the use of cartridge, revolver became possible. The fully automatic rifle appeared in 1908. Machine gun of the modern type followed in later half of 19th century.
The Salar Jung Museum’s collection of arms comprises 1,236 traditional weapons and 188 fire arms. Besides India, the Museum’s arms come from countries like England, France, Germany, Belgium, USA, Turkey, Persia and China. Majority of them show decorations done in enamelling, damascening, engraving, jewelling and embossing.
In the mixture of Museum’s swords, daggers, guptis (concealed swords), shields, battle-axes, spears, and armour parts like helmets, armguards, coat of mail and char-aina (four protective metal plates) the visitors will find a variety of materials and designs used.
The Indian rulers whose names are inscribed on the swords and daggers are the Mughul emperors Humayum, Jahangir, Shah Jahan, Aurangazeb and Bahadur Shah and Qutub Shahi rulers Abdullah Qutub Shah and Sultan Abul Hasan Tana Shah. About English swords, mention may be made of a sword presented in 1875 by the Prince of Wales to Sir Salar Jung I (1829-1883). The blade was manufactured by Wilkinson in London. A curved sword is a present to Sir Salar Jung I from Viscount Kitchner, the then commander-in-chief of Indian army. The blade is beautifully etched.
The collection of fire arms is equally rare and varied. The flint-locks, match-locks, repercussion-locks, muzzle-loading, breech-loading and automatic guns, blunderbusses, ordinary pistols and revolvers ranging from 17th century to 20th century are interesting. Well-known gun manufacturers represented in the collection are: Smith and Wesson, Samuel Rock, Devisme A Paris, Wood and Sons. The pistol bearing inscription referring to the warrior prince Tipu Sultan is a proud possession of the Museum.

Far Eastern Wood-Carvings
The Salar Jung museum has a large collection of wood carvings from Far-Eastern countries ranging from 17th to 20th century. This collection comprises of wooden sculptures, wooden furniture and lacquered work on wooden objects.
Wood carving as an art form includes any kind of sculpture in wood ranging from the decorative bas-relief on small objects to life size figures in round, furniture and architectural decorations. The wood used varies greatly in their hardness and grain quality. The most commonly used wood is boxwood, pine, pear, walnut, willow, oak and ebony. The tools used for carving are simple gauges, chisels, wooden mallets and pointed instruments. Although this was universally one of the earliest art medium, wood carving has withstood poorly the vicissitudes of times and climate.
The art of wood carving plays an important role in the history of Chinese architecture, painting and sculpture. Wood carving is not only a traditional Chinese art form but also an essential part of the Chinese culture. The development of wood carving can be seen through the era of the Ming to the Qing dynasties. Wood carving was extensively used to decorate imperial palaces, temples and rich merchant residencies. There are mainly two categories of wood carvings, first being the reproduction of the Ming style, second the modern furniture. The Ming style furniture is adored by a vast number of people over the world, its reason being the sententiousness and liveliness.
In Japan much of Chinese type wood carving is apparent. The native carver is fond of massing foliage without the stalk to lead him. He appears to put in his foliage, fruits and flowers first then indicates the stalk. Such a treatment, especially when birds and beasts are introduced has the highest decorative effect.
In Far Eastern countries the carver is unrivalled for deftness of hand. Grotesque and imitative work of the perfection is produced, many of the carvings of these countries, Japan has beautiful works of art, especially when the carver replicates lotuses, lilies or other aquatic flowers.

Salar Jung museum How one man's art collection became a national treasure
Salar Jung museum How one man's art collection became a national treasure
A nobleman of the Salar Jung family of Hyderabad, Nawab Mir Yousuf Ali Khan, Salar Jung III (1889–1949) served as prime minister of Hyderabad during the Nizam's rule. He spent a substantial amount of his income, over a period of thirty-five years, collecting artefacts from all across the world.
After the Nawab died in 1949, the collections were left behind in his ancestral palace Diwan Devdi. The collection was formerly exhibited there as a private museum, named Salar Jung Museum, which was inaugurated by Jawaharlal Nehru on 16 December 1951.[3][4]
Old timers believe that the present collection constitutes only half of the original art wealth collected by the Nawab. His employees siphoned off part of it, since the Nawab depended upon his staff to keep a vigil.[citation needed]
In 1968, the museum shifted to its present location at Dar-ul-Shifa, and is administered by a board of trustees with the governor of Telangana as ex officio chairperson under the Salar Jung Museum Act of 1961. Some more art pieces were lost or stolen during the shifting of the museum from Dewan Devdi to the present site.[5]
In 2003, the museum signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Mission for Manuscripts, and was declared a manuscript conservation centre.
In 2006, a fire broke out in an auditorium in the museum premises. However, it was quickly extinguished and none of the artifacts were damaged.[6][7] After the incident, fire safety facilities were upgraded.[8]

the walking sticks collection and Ancient weapons at salar jung museum
the walking sticks collection and Ancient weapons at salar jung museum
Walking Sticks
The story of Walking sticks dates back to very early times. Walking sticks have been constant companions to humans for time immemorial sometimes as a staff for support, sometimes as an aid for the old and sometimes as a weapon for the young.
It initially started as a staff held by people of authority like chieftains of tribes, village heads to shepherds who tended sheep and cattle. In olden times, even prophets held wooden staffs as a means of support; the staff of Prophet Moses is a fact. As time passed the staff transformed into a scepter which was held as a symbol of authority and power by the kings, later these scepters were embedded with gems and precious stones to symbolize the stature of its master.
A change was brought about when in the 17th and 18th centuries walking sticks became an object of fashion for the Europeans and others who carried them. The sticks varied from person to person, a wealthy person would carry a walking stick decorative enough to flaunt his position, while others with lesser means would use a much simpler stick.
With walking sticks holding a center stage, eminent jewelers of that period took time to make them look striking with inlaid settings of precious and semi-precious stones and to make them look exquisite and suitable for the rich taste. Some of this kind are displayed at the ‘Walking stick Gallery’ in the museum.
The gallery has a variety of walking sticks on display. They are made from cane, Malacca cane, wood, sandal, ivory, fish bone, jade, glass, leather etc. Some are decorated with semi-precious hilts also. This entire collection is the personal collection of the Salar Jung family.

Salar Jung Museum Hyderabad
Salar Jung Museum is a historic art gallery of all the arts, craftsmanship, jewels, earthenware, floor coverings, materials, compositions, furniture from different parts of the world and all the gatherings were sourced from the property of Salar Jung’s family, situated in the Darushifa on the southern banks of Musi River in the city of Hyderabad.
It is the 3rd biggest National Museum in India and it is the lifetime glory of the Nawab Mir Yousuf Ali Khan Bahadur Salar Jung-III, the seventh Nizam of Hyderabad, spent a liberal part of his salary for more than 35 years to build this monumental gathering. The collections that were abandoned in his royal residence, Dewan Devdi were later displayed in a private exhibition initiated by Jawaharlal Nehru in 1951.
There was a saying that the present gatherings are just 50% of the first craftsmanship during his time and most of the art pieces, jewels were lost and stolen during the movement of exhibition hall from Derwan Devdi to the present site in 1968 which is regulated now by the Government under the Salar Jung Museum Act, 1961.
A must visit place for the history lovers, the museum has collections from around the globe. The major attraction is the mechanical clock where the bell strikes every hour. The museum is huge to cover, its spread across 3 buildings of 2 floors each.
One of the three National Museums in the country, this place of heritage is a must-visit in Hyderabad. The location of the museum is on the River Musi, which also makes it an interesting place to visit. The museum is dedicated to ancient arts and houses paintings, sculptures, manuscripts, carvings, artifacts, and more, not only from all over India but from different parts of the world.
This famous three storied museum is very popular in Hyderabad and makes it to every tourist's list.
