Part 6 - Tech Sights Front Tower - AmbGun 10/22 Takedown Project
AmbGun “10/22 Takedown Build Series in Shorts”
https://www.ambgun.com/ambidextral-rifle/backpackrifle/takedown22lr
I was going to use the sights mounted on the Ruger barrel, but I discovered that the receiver’s pic rail blocked them.
Tried mounting a Leupold VX Freedom scope, but there were not enough pic rail slots to get it far enough forward for a proper Turkey Neck cheek weld. I experimented with a red dot, it works well enough.
Ultimately I went back to my desire for irons with a Tech Sights front sight tower with its standard AR post it sits about ½” higher than Ruger’s stock front sight. I had some hope that a Tech Sights SU16 rear peep would fit on the pic rail, but the overhang would not clear the receiver…so I dug out the original plastic rail mounted peep sights that came with my SU16c…not exactly the elegant option for the rifle, but they line up with the Tech Sights front tower.
On a takedown rifle, barrel mounted sights make sense for preserving a precise zero…but within the noise of my marksmanship, I do not think I'll be able to discern a zero shift. I will test that with a magnified optic. My guess is that most claims of a shift in point of impact is often just a matter of being fooled by randomness…something that I think is rampant in the shooting world.
The rear peep has the advantage that it adds 7” to the sight radius over the barrel mounted sights. I suspect the added sight radius carries more benefit than “zero preserving” barrel mounted sights.
For a backpack carbine, I prefer the less bulky and sturdy simplicity of irons…which I will use for the Appleseed Qualification Test…next.

Part 5 - MagPul X22 Backpacker - AmbGun 10/22 Takedown Project
AmbGun “10/22 Takedown Build Series in Shorts”
https://www.ambgun.com/ambidextral-rifle/backpackrifle/takedown22lr
Rifle stock for the AmbGun 10/22 takedown project.
Since I wanted the takedown package to be able to easily slip in and out of a scabbard, I bypassed the rubber over molded Hogue stock.
Given my mountain bike emphasis on bulk and weight, I chose the MagPul X22 Backpacker which is 12 ounces lighter than the Hogue and a whopping 21 ounces lighter than MagPul’s X22 Hunter.
The Backpacker features storage for 3 ten round mags. And some o-ring sealed storage in the grip that’ll hold a really small tourniquet, water purification tablets, or some Skittles. The stock has holes ready for QD sling inserts and while I'm a huge advocate for shooter’s aid sling, I'll leave them unfilled…saving weight and saving $70 for the MagPul Type 1 and Type 2 inserts…four fucking QD inserts that cost almost as much as the stock. Wow.
No stock mounting screws included in the Magpul kit or with the Ruger barrel…another week waiting for a stupid screw. The Brownells receiver thoughtfully included the stock screw for its side of things.
So if You're following along with your own build, get some receiver cross pins and an extra stock screw.
The X22 Backpacker DOES include an elevated cheek riser/storage cover for those who go with optics. The way that the receiver stock and barrel stock link up is beautiful and keeps receiver and barrel from banging together in a backpack. The rubber buttstock pad and angled toe remind me of the MFT Battlelink stock that I like so much.
A terrific takedown stock design, just keep in mind that MSRP will be almost $200 if you want ambi QD inserts.

Part 4 - Ruger Takedown Barrel - AmbGun 10/22 Takedown Project
AmbGun “10/22 Takedown Build Series in Shorts”
https://www.ambgun.com/ambidextral-rifle/backpackrifle/takedown22lr
Barrel choices for the AmbGun 10/22 takedown project.
The AmbGun online survey results found the three options very closely matched.
I went with the Ruger cold hammer forged threaded barrel. The price is ⅓ that of the exotic fiberglass wrapped aftermarket barrels. While it included barrel mounted sights, that turned out to not be an advantage…except for the front sight dovetail.
It would have been nice to combine the Volquartsen bolt and trigger kit with a Volquartsen barrel. I really like how they reverse “cantilever” a pic rail to allow for a barrel mounted optic that is shifted rearward over the receiver…this does require a non-railed receiver so I could not go this route.
The Tactical Solutions Takedown Barrel is a great option and shaves several ounces compared to the Ruger barrel. If I didn't think that Ruger makes very good barrels, I would have gone the TacSol route. Plus I think the TacSol barrel mounted sights would be visually blocked by the Brownell’s Receiver integral pic rail.
Ultimately, the Ruger offers 90% at ⅓ the price.

Went to the range to zero the Palmetto State Armory carry handle sight that sits atop my Bear Creek Arsenal 20” AR.
Once zeroed, I decided to do an “Around the Squares” test…something I often do with optics, but never before with irons
Always aiming at the center square, I use the .43 MOA windage clicks and .53 Elevation clicks to move the hits from square to square.
I start with “checking my zero” firing at and hitting the center square. Then to hit the square to the left of center, I dial in 9 MOA left or 21 clicks on the windage and while still aiming at the center square, look for my hit in the middle left square.
Then using the elevation wheel, I dial up 11 MOA…or 21 clicks. Aim at the center square and anticipate a hit on the upper left square.
Then it’s 18 MOA right, 42 clicks…I ran out of windage clicks to the right so went as far as I could (8 clicks short), aimed at the center square and anticipated a hit near the upper right square.
Then 11 MOA down or 21 clicks on the elevation wheel, aiming at the center square, looking for a hit just to the left of the middle right square.
With the irons, I couldn’t dial down to the bottom row squares, so I did 21 clicks left for 9MOA. If I had been paying attention I could have subtracted 8 clicks to put me back to my zero…fired for the center square, and looking for a hit on the center square…or, in this case, 2 MOA to the left.
I think the test demonstrates that the .43 MOA per click for windage and .53 MOA per click for elevation is correct and that the PSA carry handle sight can legitimately perform the “around the squares” test.

Palmetto State Armory Carry Handle Sight
AmbGun Ambi Known Distance Irons vs ACOG Shootout project
https://www.ambgun.com/ambidextral-rifle/ar15/ironsACOG
Very positive reviews led me to choose the Palmetto State Armory carry handle for a carry handle irons vs optics project. Very positive elevation and windage clicks. Z and numerical elevation marks, as well as the elevation position strike.
The A2 sight embedded in the PSA carry handle is more stable than low to mid-tier offerings.
Like most carry handle sights it “features” huge thumb nuts which I promptly removed and cut the studs shorter. Use steel 5mm nuts with .8 pitch. I torqued to 25 inch pounds. Low drag, less snaggy.
Oddly, the PSA sight was not indexed properly with the sight bottoming out well before the 300 meter 6/3 marking. To get two clean clicks, I needed to move the top index wheel 4 clicks counter-clockwise.
With elevation rotated to 600 meters, the 6/3 under the index line, I backed out the small screw with a 1/16” hex key, held the top index wheel in place while I rotated the bottom wheel four clicks clockwise. Snugged down the hex screw that lock the two halves together.
Nonetheless, the PSA carry handle looks to be the equal of the highly regarded surplus Colt version. It has the coveted square, I believe BASF, foundry mark.
Highly recommended.

Mission First Tactical Battlelink Minimalist Stock
AmbGun's Project related to Bear Creek Arsenal Carry Handle AR15
https://www.ambgun.com/ambidextral-rifle/ironsACOG
Mission First Tactical Battlelink Stock
https://missionfirsttactical.com/BMSMIL
When shooting my son’s Rifle Dynamics RD700 fitted with the Mission First Tactical Battlelink stock, I totally overlooked the MFT minimalist stock.
It took Bear Creek Arsenal sending me a carry handle rifle for a coming project that was fitted with the BattleLink to really appreciate the MFT offering.
Key is the location of the sling QD which allows perfectly mirrored ambidextrous use of a GI sling as a shooter’s aid. That alone motivated me to ask Mission First Tactical to send me one for my BCM RECCE
The stock is 65 grams lighter than my old BCM stock. And the Battlelink design lets you hang your rifle in the closet. Some worry about the unreinforced buttpad, but not only do I find it very durable, but I think it is better to break the stock than damage the buffer tube.
The angled toe probably delivers some minor benefit for performing ambidextrous transitions.
I would like to see stops in the sling QD to constrain it within 45 degrees on each side so my sling doesn’t accidentally get twisted upside down.
Mission First Tactical Battlelink minimalist stock is most definitely Ambidextral Gunfighter recommended. The design has been around a long time. I’m rather surprised that I overlooked it for so long.

Legacy Safety and Security Ballistic Ball Cap - Minuteman Review
Legacy Safety and Security Ballistic Ball Cap
https://legacyss.net/product/legacy-safety-armored-baseball-hats/
Legacy Safety and Security Ballistic Ball Cap features Level II protection…handgun rounds like 22LR, 9mm, and 45acp
In paintball we learned that If making ambidextrous “optimal use of cover” it is unlikely that you will get shot in the chest, but a portion of your head IS exposed. Possible that some head armor is more important than body…for the ambidextral gunfighter.
Testing with my head at risk, about as useful as the “ow my balls” gun channels, the hat stopped the projectile with no noticeable backface deformation. Annnnd
Picking it up, you immediately notice that it's heavier than your standard cap
But it is surprisingly comfortable to wear all day.
At first it tends to stand tall on your head, but seems to settle in for a more conventional snug fit.
Rather generic looking Hat shell needs a velcro morale patch area. But you Can move the armor to most other hats.
Backface deformation…yeah you’ll probably suffer a concussion or maybe a TBI. I think the cap will function similarly to MIPS (Multi-Directional Impact Protection System) on bike helmets, rotating a bit to disperse impact.
It would be nice if that liner were offered standalone. I’d like to see a version with Fudd ear flaps that could be dropped down for more temple protection. I would like to close up the back hole…since I wear my hat backwards when shooting rifles
Legacy Safety and Security Ballistic Ball Cap-Armor that you’re more likely to be wearing when things go down.

Viridian RFX44 Closed Emitter Green Dot - Minuteman Review
Viridian RFX44 is a green dot, closed emitter competitor to the Aimpoint ACRO P2…Advanced Compact Reflex optic.
The RFX key advantage is a lens that is about 50% larger than the Aimpoint. All in a package that is smaller…including almost 1/10” narrower which is a better fit for most RMSc optics ready pistols…but not the Zev Tech “universal” RMSc cut.
The vertical supports are thinner on the RFX44 meaning that with both eyes open it is easier to get the optic body to ghost away with the dot superimposed on the target.
The RFX44 is 12 grams lighter than the Aimpoint reducing reciprocating mass on pistols…which will theoretically reduce the risk of cyclic malfunctions.
Part of the size and weight advantage comes from the smaller 1632 battery vs 2032 used in the Aimpoint…the Viridian runs for 30,000 hours thanks to motion activated energy savings vs the Aimpoint’s 50,000 hours of constant on.
Small CR1632 battery for 30,000 hours of motion activated use vs Aimpoint’s constant on 50,000 with the 2032
The RFX44’s size and weight advantage is at the expense of less environmental protection.
The Viridian’s IPX6 water resistance is outclassed by Aimpoint’s 115’ submersible ACRO.
And its operating temperature range is 64% less than the ACRO…not great for a firearm used outdoors during Wyoming winters or stored in a vehicle during our summers.
-4 to 130 vs -49 to 160
134 degree temperature range vs 209
Cold temp of -4 vs Acro’s -49
High temp of 130 vs Acro’s 160
Green dot vs red? In my area with more red rock than trees, the green is an advantage. In vegetation rich areas, red is probably better. Maybe the next generation will offer the ability to dynamically switch between red and green.
I tried the RFX44 mounted atop the Vortex Spitfire on my RDB. This allowed three stages of sighting….head up high for run ‘n gun, down to canted left or right CQB, and then tight cheek weld for precision with the Spitfire 5x.
The choice: reduced visual obstruction of the affordable RFX44 vs the rugged Aimpoint.

Walther P22 Q - Minuteman Review
The Ambidextral Gunfighter Minuteman Review of the Walther P22Q
Low grip ratio is comfortable, but not optimal to index for point shooting.
Rounds per size and weight are not the equal of modern peers….LCP, P17, or P322
Wobbly rear and plastic sights are inconsistent with Walther quality.
Manual safety and standard pic rail for dry firing with MantisX. I did 320 rounds of dry fire before range testing with 600 rounds of live.
Mag disconnect safety…yuch
Short leverage mag release Paddles are stiff. This is my least favorite paddle mag release and it is still way better than any button.
Plastic take down clip feels breaky and can break a fingernail.
Pokey spring protrudes slightly from hammer
Good single action trigger.
Double action allows for hammer down, round in chamber carry as well as second strike capability.
However, Frequent, but intermittent failures to fire in double action ultimately led me to take advantage of Walther’s generous 30 day money back guarantee. Given size and limited capacity compared to the Ruger LCP II, I’m not willing to go down the “get it running” rabbit hole.

In my opinion, it would be borderline irresponsible to own a CCW pistol and not have Laser Academy Pro, the targets, a training laser, and MantisX. Everytime I get a new pistol, I dry fire it for a thousand shots before doing any live fire.

22LR Ruger LCP II - Minuteman Review
22LR Ruger LCP II - Minuteman Review
Possibly the smallest 10 round 22LR semi-auto pistol available…the LCP II.Excellent deep concealment pocket pistol. Certainly the most adorable with its tiny, tilting barrel.
Fun and very easy to shoot fast
Many people report great reliability out of the box, it took a Galloway Precision Spring kit to get mine working well.
Accidental magazine disengagements are a problem. Stiffer mag release spring helps a bit. The Alabama pocket holster with protection of the mag button is the solution. Problem would be best solved with a P17 like paddle mag release.
Magazine safety disconnect is stupid, but is easily removed when installing the Galloway Precision Spring kit or stiffer mag release spring. Neither is an easy task, but if you lack the focus and attention to detail required, maybe CCW is not for you either.
The LCP thrives on CCI Mini-Mag. Federal punch, due to slightly longer case, has the occasional issue.
Gloves routinely get caught in trigger. Only a problem when you’re trying to change hands or holster.
Until KelTec releases an LCP sized, 10 round version of the P17, the Ruger 22LR LCP II is my favorite deep concealment pistol.
Viridian e-series laser helps with the short sight radius.
