American Civil War | Civil War | Watch Express
The American Civil War, often known as the War Between the States, was a four-year battle (1861–1655) between the Union and 11 Southern states that seceded to form the Confederate States of America.
After decades of rising sectional hostility over slavery, the Southern states (South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina, in chronological order) seceded in 1860–61 and started these wars. Northern States economies rapidly modernised and diversified between 1815 and 1861. Industrialization had taken hold in the North, where small farms with free labour dominated agriculture. Northerners also invested in a vast transportation system of canals, roads, steamboats, and railroads; financial industries like banking and insurance; and a large communications network of cheap, widely available newspapers, magazines, books, and the telegraph.
