#bestof #2022 #houseofcommons
Here is a roundup of noble "best of" moments 2022 in the House of Commons in which level-headed MPs barrage the government on the issues.
Highlights are Leader of the Opposition Pierre Poilievre making some clever quips, then-leader of the Opposition Candice Bergen rallying for Canadians, MP Raquel Dancho giving the opposition the business on inflation and other issues, MP Melissa Lantsman sassing back in an appropriately righteous manner, MP Cheryl Gallant won't let up, MP Dane Lloyd calls out the government fiercely, MP Michael Barrett in indignation over Arrivecan, MP Stephanie Kusie using poem to debate, super-serious MP Michael Cooper in persistent inquiry, MP Jasraj Singh Hallan defending Alberta with verbal prowess, MP Shannon Stubbs delivering the facts and stats in rapid fire succession, MP Tim Uppal recalling with clear-sightedness and compassion the difficulties Canadians have faced, and many other moments.
Happy New Year, Canada!

MP Barlow Exposes Government Data Memory Hole!
#justinflation #inflation #data #statscan #cpi #groceries #johnbarlow
Newsflash! Member of Parliament John Barlow exposes the grocery price CPI Index Stats Can Memory Hole (prices of 52 products wiped out, making it impossible to do year by year historical comparisons) just at a time when inflation is highest.
MP John Barlow (Foothills, AB) asked the pertinent questions in Question Period - House of Commons December 14 2022. He also brought to light the issue in the Agri Committee Meeting of December 5, with witness Sylvain Charlebois,
Director, Agri-Food Analytics and Professor, Dalhousie University.
The following was highlighted:
The fact that Statistics Canada changed their format for reporting historical price data. Down the memory hole that data has gone! Normally, you could pinpoint how food prices had changed, comparatively, over the years in order to have a better idea of inflation and costs. Statistics Canada’s historical database showed the average price of fifty-two products sold at Canadian grocery stores going back every year for 25 years. How much was milk in 1999? 2004? This could be known by consulting the database. In mysterious and alarming manner, this 25-year database was removed in May which radically reduced transparency
(“Statistics Canada is Changing How it Monitors Food Prices and ‘It Couldn’t Come at a Worse Time’” by Sylvain Charlebois, Retail Insider).
We know it doesn’t take a database, government bureau or expert to know what consumers know! Shoppers know reality from their wallets, their budgets. and from thousands of shopping trip experiences. They feel the price pain. Each person has a framework of what is expensive or not. Still, that is no excuse for StatsCan not to keep the data that Canadians (and economists, researchers, etc) need to know in this high-inflation period.
Thanks John Barlow for being on the case!

One of Canada's Original Mansions (Stewart Hall)
A drive by one of Canada's original mansions - Stewart Hall. Originally known as Mull Hall (named for Isle of Mull in Scottish Highlands). Charles Wesley MacLean had this residence built in 1915–16 (a new widower - he had married Doris Fulford who tragically died in childbirth as well as their baby). The Fathers of Sainte-Croix acquired the residence for a nominal price. In 1958, they were going to sell it to a real estate developed (and the mansion would be transformed into an apartment high-rise). However, fortunately Walter and May Stewart, neighbours, purchased the hall and then donated it to the city of Pointe-Claire for one dollar. Stewart Hall, comprised of thirty-five rooms, is now a beautiful cultural center, art gallery and meeting place in the city of Pointe-Claire, Quebec, in the West Island of Montreal. It is located on Lakeshore Boulevard on the shores of Lac Saint-Louis (176 chemin du Bord-du-Lac Lakeshore). Lac Saint-Louis flows into the Saint Lawrence Seaway.

Member of Parliament Stephanie Kusie (Calgary-Midnapore) is a voice for Canadians in House of Commons who don't know how they'll buy Christmas presents this year. She rose in Question Period on December 9 to highlight the worry of Canadians this holiday in face of inflation. Watch MP Kusie stand up in House of Commons and talk about how Christmas spending (even basics) is getting out of reach for Canadians in a plea for the reduction of excess taxes and government overspending that is leading to inflation and hardship.

Canada in 1949 (post war period) - "A Snowy Day" - Life in Canada late 1940's
#canada #history
Here is five and a half minutes of a day in Canada in 1949. A glimpse into what our country looked like on one day 73 years ago. A reverend drove around to many small towns in Canada and filmed. Original vlogger. We have edited one edition of this old footage -"best of moments" - and set it to piano instrumental of "The First Noel" with additional holiday and snow clips.
In this short video, you'll see many amazing moments in Canada. It's a "typical day" (a happy day) .... People are having snow fights, trying to get their car out of snow, going to barber shop, chatting with neighours, the dog wants to go along with the people in the car and follows along, a small kid goes to store by herself, original environmental basket in hand, how streets were cleared back then, getting gas Old School, original "photo bomb" - kid wants to get in all the pictures, how kids travelled in cars back then (no car seat), a young WWII soldier shakes hands with an appreciative neighbor on the street, people going shopping in serious amounts of snow with just shoes on...with smiles.
We are grateful to Rev. Leroy (Roy) Massecar (1918-1986) - who filmed many small towns between 1946- 1949. "Stars of the Town: Scenes from around Southwestern Ontario" (UWO) - from which this montage is drawn.
He wanted to capture small town way of life in the immediate post World War II era and what a great job he did! The reverend would film ( using silent, black and white 8mm film) a small town on a given day and then show the town the video in the movie theatre, town halls or community centers with everyone delighted to see themselves. There are hours of this footage - he visited over 100 towns!
This particular town featured is Alvinston, Ontario, east of Sarnia.
Full length video of Alvinston in 1949 can be seen here:

Prophetic Words of Perrin Beatty on the Potential for UNWARRANTED Use of Emergencies Act
#emergenciesact #poec
Words from 1987 of Perrin Beatty, author of the Emergencies Act, on the potential for the UNWARRANTED use of the Emergencies Act, that ring true and are relevant today.
Then defence minister Perrin Beatty had discerning words to say, then and now.
The author of the Emergencies Act, foresaw what could come (the misuse of the Emergencies Act) and regrets the situation of devastating partisanship that prevents proper legislative processes.
You can hear part of his speech from the House of Commons on November 16, 1987. On this day,
MPs began the second reading of Bill C-77,
legislation to enact the Emergencies Act.
Here are some quotes from a great Canadian, Perrin Beatty:
“What I regret in looking at the situation today is how poisoned with partisanship Parliament has become, which then undercuts the ability of Parliament and of parliamentary committees to actually contribute to the legislative process.”
-Perrin Beatty
“The only thing that I can say, as the author of the act, is that wherever you have extraordinary powers, there must be extraordinary accountability."
-Perrin Beatty, 2022
"To ensure public confidence, you had to have the greatest level of transparency possible.”
-Perrin Beatty

Driving to Pointe-Claire Village, Quebec
#westisland #quebec #pointeclaire #beaconsfield #drivingvideo
Driving to Pointe-Claire Village, Quebec on an early winter day. The scenery is beautiful. On this drive, you pass Briarwood Presbyterian Church, the Beaconsfield Yacht Club, Piazza Romana's and Gigi Pizzeria plus many boutiques and stores, including Westmount Florist, Ten Thousand Villages (Dix Milles Villages) and Babar Books.
Pointe-Claire was first mentioned in historical record by Nicolas Perrot (French explorer, fur trader and diplomat) in 1669. The name Pointe-Claire appeared on a map as early as 1686. The town of Pointe-Claire is bordered on the north by Dollard-des-Ormeaux, on the east by Dorval, on the south, Lac Saint-Louis, and on the west by Kirkland and Beaconsfield. Pointe-Claire Village is the historic main part of town. In the village you see heritage homes, a windmill dating back to 1709 and shops, restaurants. The shore line stretches along Lake Saint-Louis (including peninsula). The current mayor of Pointe-Claire is Tim Thomas.
