Ivermectin Authorized in Indonesia as Pharma Issued License for Production to Battle COVID-19:
Indonesia’s now in the middle of its most severe wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Now thanks in part to a wealthy entrepreneur presently serving as the Minister for State Owned Enterprises (SOE), the country’s national drug regulator authorized the use of ivermectin on an off-label basis targeting COVID-19. In 2020, the Indonesian government brought in a wealthy, dynamic, and aggressive businessman to shake up and turn around state-owned enterprises known as “SOE.” Now they’ve turned Erick Thohir loose on COVID-19, and there’s nothing but business. A pragmatic yet big thinker, the new SOE Minister of the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency, known for the acronym BPOM, issued a distribution permit for ivermectin, meaning the regulatory body for this Southeast Asian nation of 270 million, the worlds’ fourth most populous nation, has authorized the use of the generic, low-cost drug as a therapeutic for COVID-19. Based on the results of a study, this BPOM action led to a distribution license to PT Indofarma Tbk; and production now has commenced with plans for distribution of over 4 million units per month.

Unprecedented Pandemic Turnaround in Uttar Pradesh with Dramatic Decline in Cases
The health authorities for the state of Uttar Pradesh are easing up on COVID-19-based restrictions, at least in zones of the state where SARS-CoV-2 infections now fall below 600 cases. The state was already offering ivermectin as part of a population-wide regimen but the health authorities there doubled down their efforts as India’s national COVID-19 guidelines introduced ivermectin just days before.

Story 2 | University of Minnesota ‘COVID-OUT’ Factorial Trial Investigates Potential of Ivermectin, Fluvoxamine & Metformin for Early Onset Mild-to-Moderate COVID-19
The University of Minnesota recently added generic study drugs to critically important yet not widely known clinical trial investigating outpatient treatment for SARS-CoV-2 infection, the virus behind COVID-19. The study, led by Carolyn Bramante called The COVIDOUT clinical trial targets an incredibly important segment of the COVID-19 diseases spectrum, which covers approximately 90% of the total cases that fall in either the asymptomatic or mild-to-moderate symptomatic category. At Present, there are no authorized treatments for this massive population. While a few pharmaceutical companies, such as Merck and Pfizer as well as AstraZeneca, are testing therapies that target this lucrative market, around the world other generic drugs are either under investigation or are in use such as Ivermectin, Favipiravir, and others.

Story 1 | Mexico City Wide Innovative Population-Level Study Administers Ivermectin-based Home Kits with Drastic Reduction in Hospitalizations
Since December 28, the ivermectin-based medical kits were distributed to mild to moderate symptomatic patients. The Mexico City Government sought to measure the effectiveness o f this population-wide intervention inclusive of the ivermectin-based medical kit in overall hospitalization during the pandemic. Using a quasi-experimental research design involving a Coarsened Exact Matching method leveraging hospital and phone call monitoring data, the study team estimated logistic-regression models with a range of observational data and found a significant reduction in hospitalizations among the cohort receiving ivermectin-based medical kit.

Story 2 | Uttar Pradesh Health Officials on Record: Claims Ivermectin as Prophylactic Has Lowered COVID-19 Infection Rate & Death Rate
The government of Uttar Pradesh, the most populated state in India, has declared that the use of Ivermectin as a “Prophylactic and therapeutic” has not only lowered transmission and infection rates but has also served to reduce the COVID-19 death rate as well. It’s been a year since the first cluster of five (5) cases was reported in Agra, and recently, the Health Department has shared positive results with the ongoing program. TrialSite shared August last year that the most populated Indian state embraced Ivermectin as a COVID-19 therapy and prophylactic while no Western press bothered to touch the subject. More recently, TrialSite reported that ivermectin has been included in the national COVID-19 guidance due in part to positive outcomes now emerging. Again, there hasn’t been a peep from the West. Uttar Pradesh was an early mover, embracing a protocol using both the anti-parasite drug as well as Doxycycline for use as a prophylactic and as a therapeutic tool targeting COVID-19. Clinical trials in Bangladesh using a similar protocol were producing results last summer as well. Now the Uttar Pradesh health department shared recently that it also plans on conducting a controlled study once this second wave of the pandemic wanes.

News Roundup | Another New York State Supreme Court Justice Issues Ivermectin Order For 81-Year-Old
John W. Swanson, an 81-year-old farmer from Stafford, New York, a rural area east of Buffalo, was infected with COVID-19, on a ventilator, and according to a legal affidavit, ‘on death’s doorstep’ at United Memorial Medical Center (part of Rochester Regional Health). The patient was given one dose of ivermectin, and started breathing again. But in what is becoming a similar New York State story, the hospital’s doctors then refused to give follow-up doses of ivermectin. And the patient’s family moved swiftly for justice. Swanson’s wife Sandra hired the same attorneys that were able to convince other New York State judges to compel other hospitals to administer ivermectin to dying patients.

Reminder: We here at TrialSite News always recommend seeking advice from a physician for treatment in regards to Covid-19. Additionally as of the filming of this episode, here in the US the official guidelines from the FDA and the NIH are as follows.
First, The FDA has cautioned against its use for Covid-19 saying that they have not approved ivermectin for use in treating or preventing COVID-19 in humans. The FDA also added a notice about the use of the animal version of Ivermectin saying that one should “Never use medications intended for animals on yourself. Ivermectin preparations for animals are very different from those approved for humans.”
Second, The NIH has a softer stance on the subject of Ivermectin, with a more neutral stance, neither for, nor against the use of the drug.

News Roundup | Texas Physician/Researchers Case Series Finds Reduction in COVID-19 Hospitalization
Article 1
Texas Physician/Researchers Case Series Finds Reduction in COVID-19 Hospitalization by 87.6% & Death 74.9%:
A group of Texas-based providers, including physicians, some highly published, recently published in the International Journal of Innovative Research in Medical Science results of a case series type of study initially involving a group of 320 COVID-19 patients deemed high risk—which is to says, over 50 years old with at least one comorbidity. The group was then able to add 549 cases more by the end of the study period, which was December of 2020. This group of physicians, who are part of a small but vocal and dedicated camp, declared that during the pandemic, the medical profession disappointed, turning into “watchful watchers” for the vast majority of COVID-19 cases—especially they claimed, those cases that fit the study patient category—desperately needing care.
