PERU | The Road That Shouldn't Exist

Peru 3N
This route we’re planning to drive in Peru can easily be considered one of the most unlikely roads to ever exist. There’s almost nothing written about it online, ‘cause it’s just another highway right? Wrong, far from it. From my research parts of this road can be considered the most switchbacked in the world, with one section containing a staggering 57 hairpin turns in a distance of 1.8 kms as the crow flies. Not only that, the number of landslides can be counted daily, not annually. Carved thousands of feet above sea level into the sides of mountains, the 3N is an anomaly. It chalks up as the most hair raising and dangerous drive we’ve ever attempted. Just an average day here n Latin America.
We’re entering Peru on the North West Coast. Coming from the mountains in Ecuador, this was a shock to the system on all fronts. In some ways it felt like we had entered into a Mad Max film. Dust everywhere. We’ll be following the coast along the Pan American highway until be reach Trujillo. Along the way we’ll be looking for some sand dunes. From there we’ll navigate directly East, towards the 3N.
What started as a leisurely drive through farmland and small villages quickly left us in anticipation for the most intense parts of the route - the game of counting land slides, and the locals who are practicing for the indy 500 on the edge of a cliff.
If you remove the remnants of recent land slides, the perilous cliff edges, pure solitude and 1000M elevation gain through dozens of hairpins, it’s just your average highway right.
The route continues it’s winding snake like story though mountain villages dotted with beautiful murals, locals selling their wares and kids yelling to their parents “gringo gringo!”
Things became more interesting when the road turned to mud. Thankfully the government has interest in maintaining this section but its obvious these land slides are recent, likely from rain in the last few days.
It’s amazing to us that these peaceful mountain villages exist along these crazy roads. We didn’t know it yet, but we hadn’t even seen the real crazy….

They Call it "The Trampoline of Death" | Overland Travel Film
Online articles have cited this road as one of the most dangerous in the world. While travelling sketchy roads has become commonplace for us on Latin America, we’re not sure this road still deserves that monicker, but we’re here to find out.
Built in the 1930’s to transport soldiers during the war between Colombia and Peru, this route did not have travellers in mind. A brief google search returns countless results of cars, trucks and busses succumbing to the dangerous curves and minimal guardrails.
There are no obvious obstacles except other drivers who traverse this road on a daily basis. As long as you keep your vehicle tire side down this feels like just another day in Colombia. However one mistake means death.
The unspoken language of a single lane shelf road. If you’re bigger, sure you go first. If you’re travelling uphill, yes, you can have the right of way. If you’re a full size truck carrying 12 cows and passengers hanging off each corner, ABSOLUTELY, I’ll back up for you. Taxi’s however, they don’t speak the same language. They’ll make sure those passengers make it to their destination as quick as possible, even if that means passing you on a single lane track. The language is reaffirmed in honks and beeps and hand gestures of successful passes, and we love the game.
Curves that throw your equilibrium out the window. You feel as though you’re travelling backwards, because sometimes you are! The road folds through and over itself like the contents in a pot of spaghetti.
Frequent landslides have taken many lives over the years. The death toll is not exact, but one landslide in 1989 sadly claimed over 300 lives. That leaves a mark, knowing how many people rely on this route every day. Unlike the Death road in Bolivia that has a new road built to bypass it, the Trampolin is the only East to West route for the surrounding 300 kms.
As the crow flies we travelled little distance, despite driving for hours already. The prospect of having to find camp on this road is looming in the back of our minds….

Into the Heart of COLOMBIA by 4X4 | An Overland Adventure Film
INTO THE HEART OF COLOMBIA BY 4X4
Driving the Pan American highway actually involves rarely being on the Pan American highway and intentionally going out of your way to see unique, different and exciting things. Sometimes in the middle of beautiful cities, as the tallest cathedral in Colombia.
Quickly overstimulated by the bustling streets of Manizales during a Holiday we’re heading back across Colombias central Andean Mountains. We have a destination pinned on our map, yet campsites or public land are all but non-existent here, that’s going to make things interesting as the sun sets. For now, we’ve got beautiful scenery around us.
We’re in the region called Eye Cafetero, also known as the coffee axis. This region produces the majority of Colombian Coffee. The farm we’re at uses the traditional method of growing, which combines many different medicinal plants, fruit trees and vegetables along with the coffee. This creates a natural ecosystem of defence for the coffee, as opposed to commercial monoculture plantations which have to use pesticides and fertilizers. These old machines are used to strip the shell of the beans, and the second one separates the high quality coffee for export, from the beans they sell to the supermarket.
These Colombian mountain routes are equally exhausting as they are interesting and entertaining. It may all us all day to travel 50 or 100 kms, but the views are amazing, as long as we don’t have to turn around for some reason…
This area is called Tochecito or Finca La Carbonara and these are the tallest Wax Palms in the world. This area concentrates 80% of the world’s wax palms estimated at 600,000. They’re threatened by cattle ranching in the area as the seeds that fall to the ground are mistaken for grass. It’s striking to see palms trees of this size up here at 3000 meters in elevation.
We’re hoping to camp at the top of Cerro Machin. The last time we drove into the crater of a volcano we got stuck for hours in its clay. This time we would face a different terrain hurdle.
Cerro machine is a stratovolcano that’s part of a larger system of volcanos in this region. Since 2010 its seismic activity has steadily increased and is closely monitored. In decades prior it’s been responsible for several evacuations. Now it hosts a small laguna and a farm. I can’t imagine living inside a volcano plug, but camping in it is certainly memorable.

A "Highway" of Unexpected Encounters | Overland Travel Film
Why are we on route 60?
The main reason we took route 60, over other perhaps faster and more optimal routes can be answered quite simply. It sounded fun. We have this thirst for the unknown. Although there’s not much left if any of the planet to be pioneered, we love taking roads less travelled. There were no posts about it on iOverlander, which is uncommon. This sparked curiosity, then we referred to our maps and confirmed the route has hundreds of sharp turns, a few mountain passes and was sure to be full of surprises.
We drive roads like route sixty because we’re constantly looking for the surprise factor. We don’t want everything to be easy, which sounds strange, but we want it to be memorable. These seemingly random dirt roads often tell the best stories, and that’s what we’re all about. So this is our chance to show you the unexpected sights and happenings along route 60
Route 60 is an 855km national road travelling East to West. It is technically one of Colombia’s most important routes, connecting two of the largest cities - Bogota and Medellin. We’re entering just North West of Botoga and will travel roughly 2/3s of its abstract characteristics.
As this route crosses two major mountain ranges in the Andes, it’s frequented by landslides, and parts of it were even closed for over a year back in 2019. There is major deterioration, construction and unmarked obstacles; paved highway turns to dirt, which turns to single lane rutted track. All while locals transport goods and fulfill their economical activities.
The elevation gain and loss along this route is not to be taken lightly. From nearly 3000M in the East, down to almost sea level, and back up again.

Journey to Colombia's LAST Glacier by 4X4 | Overland Travel Film
El Cocuy National Park.
I’ve always wanted to visit a Glacier. Since the dream of this trip arose. I thought it would be in Patagonia, not right here, near the equator in Colombia.
A cowboy once told us that ice is the most powerful force on earth. Seeing how millions of years of frozen water has moved and shaped this landscape, I think he was right.
Getting to the Northern tip of the Andes to see Colombia’s last and only Glacier would be a test and challenge of its own.
From our location we’re about 225 kms away, and the road looks insane.
We know it’s going to be an adventure just to get to the National park.
Colombia is working hard to increase its tourism industry. There used to be a 6 day trek through the East side of the park, but due to complications we learned about between the indigenous, and the government wanting to restore the land it’s no longer open. Additionally, these are the fastest melting glaciers on Earth. So if you want to see them, now is the time.
El Cocuy feels like a hidden gem of Colombia. The route to get here from the West is worth the time alone. It’s the first glacier we’ve been to, and it exceeded our expectations, especially the difficulty of the trek in the altitude. This country is full of surprises and amazing things to discover, and that’s exactly what we’re here to experience. I hope by now we’ve earned your subscription. For behind the scenes content and real time updates, join us on Patreon. Thank you for being here, we’ll see you next time.

Panama to Colombia: The Darien Gap, SKETCHY Bridges & Near Assault.
The Pan American Highway is the longest drivable line on the map. But there’s a catch. Between Panama and Colombia there is no road. There exists only the impenetrable Darien National Forest. This area of land has become the most dangerous migration route in the world. The roadless, lawless stretch of terrain is frequented by cartel drug runners, human traffickers, and northbound illegal emigrants. Not exactly the things we’re looking to find.
The documented vehicle attempts are few, the success’ even fewer - backed by militaries, governments, bottomless budgets and indigenous tribes.
However alluring the mysteries of an unconquered terrain, we’ll be crossing the Darien at sea.
This episode is a crescendo that begins with the process of crossing the Darien Gap, and ends at one of the most exciting routes we’ve driven on four wheel. Let’s get into it.
