Jacksonville released bodycam of an officer shooting a murder suspect from Vermont during struggle
An officer shot a suspect in the chest during a confrontation on Blanding Boulevard Wednesday evening, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office says. According to JSO, the man was identified as Brenton A. Paquin, a suspect in two armed robberies in Lake County, Florida, and a person of interest in a murder in Vermont.
According to JSO, around 6:30 p.m., an officer noticed a vehicle matching the description of a vehicle used in a robbery in Clermont, Fla.
JSO Chief Alan Parker says Paquin was found approaching the vehicle while walking a dog. Paquin confirmed that the car belonged to him.
When the officer asked him to sit down, Paquin "ignored him, stayed on his phone, and tried to brush past him" to get to the car, Parker said.
According to Parker, the officer attempted to grab Paquin, but he got into the front of a vehicle and pulled out a gun.
"It wasn't as simple as turning around with a gun in his hand," Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters said. "He was very, very close."
The officer fired at Paquin, who then dropped the gun. Aid was rendered once backup arrived to assist the officer. The Jacksonville Fire & Rescue Department then took Paquin to the hospital.
Parker said that as of Tuesday night, Paquin had been through surgery and was in stable condition.

Body cam video shows Illinois deputy fatally shooting Sonya Massey
Sonya Massey ducked and apologized to an Illinois sheriff’s deputy only seconds before he shot her three times, with one fatal blow to the head in her own home, as seen in body camera video released Monday.
The video’s release came days after an Illinois grand jury indicted former Sangamon County Sheriff’s Deputy Sean Grayson. Officials said Massey’s family viewed the footage on Wednesday.
The video confirmed prosecutors’ earlier account of the tense moment when Grayson yelled from across a counter at 36-year-old Massey to set down a pot from the stove just seconds after she started pouring the water into the sink, and the two chuckled over the “hot steaming water.”
He then threatened to shoot her, Massey ducked then briefly rose and Grayson fired his pistol at her three times.
Authorities said Massey called 911 earlier to report a suspected prowler. The video said the two deputies responded just before 1 a.m. on July 6, first walking around the house and finding a black SUV with broken windows in the driveway.
It took Massey three minutes to open the door after the deputies knock, and she immediately said, “Don’t hurt me.”
She seemed confused as they spoke at her front door, and repeated that she needed help, referenced God and told them she didn’t know who owned the car.
The video doesn’t show what led Massey and Grayson to walk inside her house, followed by the other unidentified deputy. The deputies seemed exasperated as she sat on her couch and went through her purse as they asked for identification. Then Grayson pointed out a pot sitting on a visible flame on the stove.
“We don’t need a fire while we’re here,” he said.
Massey immediately got up and went to the stove, moving the pot over near a sink. She and Grayson seemed to share a laugh before she said, “I rebuke you in the name of Jesus.”
“You better (expletive) not, or I swear to God I’ll (expletive) shoot you in your (expletive) face.” He then pulled his 9mm pistol and said, “Drop the (expletive) pot.”
Massey said, “OK, I’m sorry.” In Grayson’s bodycam footage, he pointed his weapon at her. She ducked and raised her hands while still holding two oven mitts.
Grayson was still in the living room, facing Massey and separated by a counter dividing the living room and kitchen. Prosecutors have said the separation allowed Grayson both “distance and relative cover” from Massey.
After Grayson shot her, the other deputy said, “I’m gonna go get my kit.”
Grayson said, “No, it’s a headshot. She's done. You can go get it, but that’s a headshot … there’s nothing you can do, man.”
He added: “What else do we do? I’m not taking hot (expletive) boiling water to the (expletive) face.”
Noting that Massey was still breathing despite losing a lot of blood, he relented and said he would get his kit too. The other deputy responded, “We can at least try to stop the bleeding.”
Speaking to responding police, Grayson told them, “she had boiling water and came at me, with boiling water. … She said she was going to rebuke me in the name of Jesus and came at me with boiling water.”
Grayson, who was fired last week, has pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm and official misconduct. He is being held in the Sangamon County Jail without bond.
If convicted, he faces prison sentences of 45 years to life for murder, 6 to 30 years for battery and 2 to 5 years for misconduct. His lawyer, Daniel Fultz, declined comment on Monday.

7 officers, K9 dog, and 3 others hospitalized after shooting suspects crashes into an armored truck
Seven officers and a K9 were injured in a crash with suspects from a drive-by shooting as they fled from officers. All the officers and the K9 are currently at local hospitals and expected to recover. The suspects were also transported with nonlife-threatening injuries.
Today, July 19, 2024, just before 1:00pm, SWAT and K9 officers had just cleared a call looking for a suspect with a warrant when the K9 officer saw a suspect vehicle from a recent drive-by shooting. The K9 officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but they fled. Due to the severity of the original crime, officers initiated a pursuit.
Officers in an armored vehicle moved in to assist as the suspects fled in to a residential neighborhood. As the suspects fled eastbound on Carlisle, the armored vehicle was approaching southbound on Oak, and the two vehicles crashed in the intersection. The K9 vehicle that was pursuing the suspect car then crashed into the suspect car as well.
Three suspects were detained without further incident and were transported to an area hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries. The K9 was taken to a local vet, while the officers were all transported to the hospital after the scene was made safe. A civilian car was northbound on Oak, saw the oncoming armored vehicle with lights and sirens on, pulled over, and narrowly escaped the collision.
Everyone involved is expected to recover from their injuries. Fortunately, no one else was injured as a result of the suspects’ actions.
“This particular incident highlights the challenges our patrol officers are up against every day with the number of shootings they investigate and the behavior of the suspects, not only while committing these violent crimes, but the great lengths they’ll go to escape. It puts the community at risk,” said Chief Justin Lundgren.
"Several Spokane Police officers were injured today while making an arrest. Any injury is tragic, but I am grateful it did not result in the loss of life. My thoughts are with the officers and their families,” said Mayor Lisa Brown of the incident.

NYPD shoots at suspect who was fleeing from a traffic stop after an officer was struck and dragged
A driver allegedly fleeing a traffic stop struck a police officer in Brooklyn on Friday.
Officers then fired at the vehicle as it sped away from the stop at Hegeman Avenue and Van Siclen Avenue in East New York just after 12:45 a.m.
Jose Urena says he heard the gunshots that police say they fired in response.
"I heard three shots. That's why I looked to the window - I saw him down," Urena said.
Urena says he saw police surrounding their fellow officer, who had been hit by a gray Toyota Highlander with New York license plates as the vehicle fled the scene.
"He could have family like me, you never know. He could've gotten killed right there and die, you know," Urena said.
Fortunately, the officer was treated for a minor ankle injury at the hospital.
Police were attempting to pull over the SUV over for a motor vehicle violation.
The officers involved were assigned to the Strategic Response Group unit in Brooklyn.
A few hours after the original traffic stop, the driver of another vehicle was trying to turn onto Hegeman Avenue from Hendrix Street and crashed into a police SUV, causing a bit of a chain reaction crash.
Police are now investigating whether that driver didn't see their police scene tape that had been set up to rope off the first crash scene.

New York State police trooper pinned against a tree and Amish wagon when stopping a runaway wagon
A New York State Police trooper was recently recognized for his actions in May that are credited with saving the life of a four-year-old Amish girl after a wagon she was the sole passenger in went out of control – and on Friday, state police released body camera footage of the incident.
The incident took place on May 16 when trooper James T. Egan Jr. was driving on state Route 95 in the town of Moira when he observed an Amish wagon traveling at a high rate of speed, according to police, and the horse looked to be out of control, and was running through intersections, police said, and the trooper noticed a four-year-old child as the sole occupant of the wagon.
After many failed attempts to stop the wagon with his vehicle, he led the wagon onto a grassy lawn, then leaped, exiting his vehicle, grabbed the reigns, and continued to pull on the reigns in an attempt to stop the horse, police said. Trooper Egan became pinned between a tree and the wagon, which caused the Amish wagon to stop abruptly. The child was not seriously hurt.

LAPD bodycam video shows suspect armed with machine gun firing at 2 officers during traffic stop
The Los Angeles Police Department released bodycam video Friday of the moments a suspect armed with a machine gun fired at two officers during a traffic stop in the Willowbrook area the night of July 3.
The video shows LAPD officers Stefan Carutasu and Joshua Rodney attempting to pull over the suspect at Broadway and Rosecrans Avenue. The suspect speeds up and comes to a stop on Broadway just north of Rosecrans. Before the officers could exit their patrol car, the suspect, armed with a machine gun, according to authorities, fired at police without warning.
At least one officer was seen returning fire as the suspect fled the scene. The officers pursued the suspect but lost sight of him in the area of 135th Street and Broadway.
Both officers sustained cuts and scratches from glass fragments caused by the suspect's rounds striking the police vehicle windshield, with one officer receiving two graze wounds to his head, LAPD said.
Los Angeles Fire Department personnel transported the officers to a local hospital, where they were treated for their injuries and released the following morning.
Numerous rifle casings from the suspect's weapon were recovered from the scene. No one else was injured in the incident, LAPD said.
The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Malcolm Darnell Guss, Jr., was arrested for attempted murder on July 12.
Guss faces one count of attempted murder of a peace officer, two counts of assault with a machine gun upon a peace officer, one count of shooting at an occupied motor vehicle, one count of possession of a machine gun, and two counts of possession of firearm by a felon, L.A. County District Attorney George Gascón said.
It is further alleged that Guss personally and intentionally discharged a rifle.
Guss was arraigned on Tuesday and pleaded not guilty to all charges. A preliminary hearing is scheduled on July 29. He is being held on $2,025,000 bail.
If convicted as charged, Guss faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Bodycam shows Lakeland officer using force to arrest Marcus Adams, who was smoking and on a bicycle
A man is accusing Lakeland police officers of using unnecessary force, stemming from an incident in February.
Police body cam video of the confrontation, which started when a man named Marcus Adams, says he stopped to smoke a cigarette on the Florida Southern College campus and was asked to leave.
Adams was already off campus when Lakeland police officers caught up with him.
Just 22 seconds into the body camera video, Adams can be seen falling off his bicycle. At 23 seconds, he's on his back, showing his hands. Then, at 25 seconds, officers begin to grab him as he apparently kicks his legs.
Six seconds after he fell from his bike, he's being shot with a taser.
"I was completely caught off guard and did not understand that they thought I had tried to run away," Adams said. "When they said that in the video, I was like, 'are you all crazy?' I fell off the bike, and I repeatedly told them I fell off the bike."
Flipped over, with his hands pinned beneath him, the video allegedly shows officers continuing to yell at Adams to put his hands behind his back.
"I've never had my whole body lock up, and you can't move it," he said. "You can't do anything."
Even as Adams groans in pain, is being tasered and apparently subdued, an officer begins striking Adams with his forearm.
When he asks them why he's being detained — the answer is not trespassing or smoking.
“What am I being stopped for? Why am I being stopped, because of a cigarette? On the campus?” Adams asks.
“No,” the officer responds, “Because you didn't listen to my commands, that's why.”
Community leaders who have repeatedly called upon Lakeland to address several cases of alleged police brutality say they have now seen this video as well.
“Well, immediately when I look at the video, I think of all of the other cases that we've been dealing with Lakeland and saying this is the same pattern,” said Pastor Clayton Cowart with the Poor Minority Justice Association. “This is the same situation. Now, we've seen Black, we've seen white, it's the culture.”
Earlier this month, a high-profile law firm specializing in allegations of police brutality said it would be getting involved in what they called an effort to hold Lakeland police accountable.
Pastor Cowart said he had passed this video along to them and the FBI as well.
“I don't know what it's going to take to get the Lakeland Police Department to realize that there is a serious problem here,” Cowart said.
In the arrest affidavit, police say Adams failed to take the most direct route off campus.
In a statement, Lakeland PD says Adams had not filed a formal complaint, but that all protective actions are thoroughly reviewed.
"Had Mr. Adams complied with the officers' directives,” the statement reads in part. “This incident would not have resulted in protective actions taken by the officers."
According to the police affidavit, Adams was charged with trespassing on school grounds, possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, assault on a law enforcement officer and resisting an officer without violence.
10 Tampa Bay asked Adams if he thought because officers found meth on him that it should change how people view him and his account.
"Because they found drugs in my backpack, yes," he said. "Does that justify them beating me up? No, not whatsoever, not whatsoever."

Medina police fatally shots woman by County Sheriff's deputies while carrying a replica gun, knife
Medina police officials provided more insight into Wednesday evening's fatal shooting of an armed suspect outside of the Medina County Sheriff's Office.
During a briefing on Thursday, it was announced that Medina County Sheriff Terry Grice was the one who shot the suspect, now identified as 37-year-old Victoria Carter of Lafayette Township. In addition, police officials stated that the gun Carter was carrying at the time of her death was a "replica."
"We have a unique situation here where our county sheriff, Terry Grice, was involved in this officer-involved shooting," Medina Police Chief Edward Kinney said in explaining why his department is investigating the incident.
Kinney presented surveillance camera footage of the incident, showing Carter arriving at the Medina County Sheriff's Office and parking her car directly in front of the building. Carter is seen yelling at and running towards an approaching bystander with a knife in one hand and a gun in the other.
The bystander went to the front of the building and spoke through the sheriff's outdoor intercom system. He reported seeing an armed woman in the parking lot acting in an "unruly way." Carter is seen again coming towards the witness before he flees the area.
As Carter marches back towards the front of the sheriff's office, Grice and Medina County Sheriff's Deputy Doug Clinage can be seen approaching her from the side.
Carter initially drops the toy gun on the ground, but eventually picks it back up and charges at Grice and Clinage. According to Kinney, Clinage attempted to use a taser on Carter, but it "had no effect."
The video was stopped prior to the fatal shooting of Carter by Grice.
Kinney stated that Grice and Clinage were "understandably distraught that this tragic situation occurred."
"In a split second, it's impossible for a police officer to determine whether a firearm or a replica firearm is real or not. I think any reasonable officer would have reacted the way they did when presented with those exact same facts," Kinney added.
Kinney stated that while he was not aware of any criminal activity in Carter's past, she did have "an extensive history of mental health issues."
"We've had several calls for welfare checks with her," he explained.
Carter's boyfriend was also incarcerated at the Medina County Jail, which is located in the same complex as the sheriff's office.
Investigators are uncertain as to why Carter was at the facility and why she was armed with weapons. Kinney said that those criminal investigative elements of the case are being handled by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI).

Charge dropped for mom arrested for leaving young daughter in hot car at Hollywood Walmart
Broward prosecutors have declined to pursue charges against a mother who was arrested for allegedly leaving her young daughter inside a hot car while she shopped in a Hollywood Walmart over the weekend.
Bodycam footage showed a police officer responding to the parking lot of the store on State Road 7 around 3:15 p.m. Sunday, shortly after the 4-year-old child had been pulled to safety by fire rescue workers.
Hollywood Police officials said a witness heard the child screaming from a cracked window, and rescue workers were able to pull the child out without breaking the window.
Officials said the engine was turned off while the child was inside the vehicle and that store surveillance cameras revealed the mother, 34-year-old Anastasiya Motalava, was shopping inside the Walmart for around 30 minutes while her child was left in the car.
Motalava was arrested on one count of child neglect in the incident.
But a memorandum from Broward Assistant State Attorney Melissa Kelly released Thursday said charges against Motalava would be dropped.
"There is insufficient evidence to establish that the defendant's failure to provide her child with proper supervision rises to the egregious level of culpable negligence required for a felony charge of child neglect," Kelly wrote in the memo.
According to the memo, the child wasn't harmed and didn't require medical treatment. Motalava also told investigators that she believed she was only in the store for 10–15 minutes.

LASD shoots a 14-year-old when he was armed with a revolver after fleeing from a stolen vehicle
On July 2, 2024, at 1:14 p.m., a deputy assigned to East Los Angeles Station was patrolling Atlantic Boulevard in the city of Commerce when he located a stolen vehicle.
The vehicle came to a stop in a nearby alley. The driver and rear passenger exited the vehicle and fled on foot. A third individual remained in the vehicle and was taken into custody without incident. The driver was later identified as a 16-year-old juvenile from the city of Los Angeles. The rear passenger was later identified as a 14-year-old juvenile from the city of Lancaster.
During a search of the area, the 16-year-old juvenile was located on the roof of a nearby residence and was taken into custody without incident. The 14-year-old juvenile was not located during the search operation, and the search was terminated.

Hospital patient steals ambulance with personnel inside, crashes after police chase
A patient at a Georgia hospital stole an ambulance and led police on a chase before crashing into a light pole.
The Clayton County Sheriff’s Office says the suspect, identified as Ladarius Williams, stole a private Amerimed ambulance from Piedmont Henry Hospital in Stockbridge, from which he had just been discharged after being treated.
Police say Williams drove away with ambulance personnel still in the back of the vehicle.
“Fearing for their lives, the victims jumped from the back of the moving ambulance,” the sheriff’s office said.
The sheriff’s office said Williams drove from Henry County into Clayton County, “where he had no regard for human life or property, using an ambulance as a wrecking ball, hitting multiple police cars, and causing property damage.”
Both the Clayton County Police Department and Georgia State Patrol worked to stop the suspect, which led to a chase and the suspect crashing into a light pole on Tara Boulevard near Dixon Road.
Authorities took out the ambulance’s tires with spike strips and stop sticks, but Williams continued driving.
According to the sheriff’s office, law enforcement then used a PIT maneuver to stop the ambulance.
The sheriff’s office said Williams ran away and was stunned with a Taser before being taken into custody. He is charged with aggravated assault on law enforcement, felony fleeing, obstruction, theft by taking and hit-and-run, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

Bodycam released when a machete wielding man was arrested at Cleveland Hopkins Airport
Police arrested a man with knives and several other weapons including a machete after they confronted him behind a ticket counter at Cleveland Hopkins Airport Monday.
Police got a call for a man with a machete at the ticket counter near the front entrance around 420 a.m.
Police said officers immediately responded and found the man with weapons on the ground behind the Spirit Airlines ticket counter. As officers attempted to talk with the male, he became belligerent and defiant, according to Police.
A witness told 19 News the man was screaming “I am peaceful, I am peaceful, I want to go to Jerusalem.”
Officers tased the man after he made threatening gestures towards them with a knife, but the taser was ineffective. The man jumped over the ticket counter and jumped over a stairwell in an attempt to escape.
Officers were able to arrest him, and he was transported to a hospital for crisis intervention. No injuries were reported from this incident.
