Loy Krathong festival Koh Kret and Pak Kret city in Thailand
Loy Krathong [ลอยกระทง] is one of the biggest festivities in Thailand. It is when people take to the waters to release small, illuminated boat offerings made of banana stalks and leaves. Over the years the sight of lights floating across the country’s rivers and canals has become a point of intrigue for visitors from all over.
Loy Krathong is a festival celebrated by the Thai people on the full moon night of the twelfth month of the Thai lunar calendar. In the modern calendrical system, this event usually occurs in the month of November, though the date varies from year to year. Regardless of the exact timing, Loy Krathong is always considered as an occasion for joy, gratitude, and new beginnings.
The term “Loy Krathong” is derived from word “loy” – meaning “to float”- and the word “krathong” – which refers to type of small, floating religious offering. True to its name, the highlight of the festival is the floating of krathongs across small and large bodies of water all over the country. The objective for this act varies depending on customs and beliefs, but can be generally identified as follow:

Wat Bangchak timelapse at Koh Kret in Nonthaburi Thailand
Wat Bang Jak or Wat Bang Chak in Ko Kret, Pakkred, Nonthaburi, Thailand. It is an old Raman (Mon) monastery on the bank of Chao Phraya River, within the monastery, there is a temple of Thai architectural style built from reinforcement concrete. Wat Bang Chak is located on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River, opposite Koh Kret island. The temple s large but aesthetically unappealing Buddha image looks out across the river, and is clearly visible from Koh Kret. The large Buddha image can be seen from near Wat Sao Thong Thong on Koh Kret island, from the Koh Kret cruise boats and river boats coming up the river from Bangkok.

24 Meters Tall Si Hu Ha Ta at Nonthaburi Province in Thailand
The massive 24-metre-tall statue, possibly one of the largest in the world, stands majestically over more than six rai of land owned by Subinnimit Foundation with a large number of both Thais and foreigners flocking in to pay homage and ask for blessing from this deity said to shower them with wealth and prosperity.
According to the legend Indra transformed himself into the four-eared and five-eyed deity to test the morality of farmers during a time of hardship.
He trampled over their paddy fields to see whether they would show him kindness. Even though some farmers attacked him, he was not harmed.
However one sympathetic farmer brought him some food to eat but he would not touch it. At nightfall as it got cold, the farmer lit some firewood to keep him warm, but Sihuhata suddenly picked up a red-hot firewood and put it in his mouth and incredibly spewed out gold to the delight of the farmer.

The latest from Koh Kret Island Nonthaburi Province Thailand
Koh Kret (เกาะเกร็ด) is not a natural island, it was formed in 1722, during the construction of a canal, now known as the Om Ket river.
As the canal was widened a number of times, it eventually cup off a chunk of land, and formed what is today known as Koh Kret (เกาะเกร็ด). If you’re a good swimmer, you might be able to swim to the other side of the river, but it’s still pretty wide.
The island was settled by Mon people from central Thailand, and many people living on the island now are still Mon.

Wat Ku Temple at Pak Kret Bang Phut sub district Thailand
Wat Ku in Pak kret is a stunning temple with a tragic history. Built in 1752, the temple is of Mon architecture with mural paintings in the same style. One of the buildings was built in commemoration of King Rama V’s Queen Sunandha who died tragically. The story is heart wrenching: the Queen drowned in a shipwreck while pregnant and could not be saved despite the presence of many onlookers. This was due to the law stating that commoners could not lay eyes on or touch royalty on pain of death. This law was later revoked and Wat Ku was named after the tragedy.
Wat Ku in Pakkred is one of many temples in the area, but it is the only one to share such a dark past. Historical records show that the Queen’s remains were temporarily placed in the monastery before Lying-in-State in Bangkok. The capsized ship’s wreck was later and kept in the dock near the edifice enshrining a big reclining Buddha. The is another pavilion built in Bang Pa-In Palace built in remembrance as the palace was her original destination before the Queen’s untimely death at the age of 19.
Wat Ku in Pakkred, Nonthaburi. Visitors can get there by car or by boat from Pakkred Pier.
