19th-century Kapitan Keling mosque In Penang Island Malaysia
The Kapitan Keling Mosque (Malay: Masjid Kapitan Keling, Tamil: காப்பித்தான் கெலிங மசூதி, romanized: Kāppittāṉ Keliṅa Macūti) is a mosque built in the 19th century by Indian Muslim traders in George Town, Penang, Malaysia. It is situated on the corner of Buckingham Street (Lebuh Buckingham) and Pitt Street (Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling). Being a prominent Islamic historic centre, it is part of the World Heritage Site of George Town and lies at the centre of the city's Tamil Muslim neighbourhood, the chulias. It is the first permanent Muslim institution to have been established in the area, dating from the early 1800s.[3] Cauder Mohuddeen Merican is known as the founder of the mosque and leader of the Chulias. In 1801 Sir George Leith, who was then Lieutenant Governor of Penang, appointed a prominent Indian Muslim leader, Cauder Mohudeen, as Captain of the South Indian “Keling” community. He granted a piece of land to build a mosque on the south side of Malabar Street (Chulia Street). Cauder Mohudeen (born c. 1759) was a ship mandoor or foreman from Porto Novo, which the Tamils called Paringgipettai and the Muslims Mahmudbandar, about 50 kilometres south of Pondicherry in India. He was referred to as 'Kapitan Kling.

Padang Kota Lama Esplanade in Penang island Malaysia
The waterfront Esplanade features historical landmarks, such as the Cenotaph war memorial and Fort Cornwallis, scenic promenades and access to several museums of art and culture. Architectural gems include Penang City Hall, which combines Edwardian Baroque and Palladian styles. Cafes, restaurants and bars dot the area, and there’s a handful of hotels. The ferry port offers trips to Butterworth and Langkawi Island.
Padang Kota Lama (GPS: 5.42072, 100.34221), or simply called The Padang, is the parade ground and playing field created by the British colonials in the civic district of George Town. It is bordered by Fort Cornwallis on one side, Jalan Tun Syed Sheh Barakbah, Jalan Padang Kota Lama and Light Street.
The name "The Esplanade" is usually used collectively to denote the whole area that includes Padang Kota Lama and Jalan Tun Syed Sheh Barakbah, although historically The Esplanade refers only to Jalan Tun Syed Sheh Barakbah, between the bend in the road (called Fort Point) and where the road ends, near the Cenotaph.
adang Kota Lama is located in one of the oldest section of George Town and was among the earliest part of town to be cleared. When Francis Light landed at the cape in 1786, he found that this part of the island was uninhabited (there were small Malay and Acehnese riverine settlements along Sungai Pinang) and densely forested. The land was flat but overgrown with hardwood trees such as the Penaga Laut (ironwood). The northern shore was sandy while the eastern shore was covered with mangrove swamp. Light was said to have blasted silver coins into the forest to induce the workers to clear the land. These coins would have landed in the area where Padang Kota Lama is located today.
There were several structures on Padang Kota Lama that has since been destroyed or dismantled. The clubhouse buildings, the Penang Sports Club (Cricket Section) and the Penang Recreation Club were located on the Padang - an arrangement that is similar to what we can see in Singapore's Padang today. Also located on Padang Kota Lama is the Vermont Memorial, a cost iron pavilion for the public, as well as the Municipal Band Stand, a pavilion for public entertainment and ceremonies. Most of these were destroyed during the Second World War and never rebuilt.
Fort Cornwallis was built in 1786 as a simple fort of nibong palms. It was rebuilt in bricks in 1793, and again in 1810. What we see of it dates from the 1810 renovation, with little change thereafter. On the south side of Padang Kota Lama is Light Street, the oldest street of George Town, and built to be a stately thoroughfare for the new British settlement. Across from it was the Police Courts, now the State Assembly Building (Dewan Undangan Negeri), dating from the early 19th century. On the western side of Padang Kota Lama is Town Hall and City Hall, built in 1880 and 1900 respectively. On the seaward side of Padang Kota Lama is a coastal road called The Explanade, which dates to the late 19th century (before that, it was just sandy shore). The Esplanade is now part of Jalan Tun Syed Sheh Barakbah. On a protrusion opposite Jalan Padang Kota Lama is the Cenotaph, dating to after the Second World War.

Clan Jetties of Penang at George Town Penang Island Malaysia
When you are visiting Georgetown and you would like to take a ride in one of the authentic Trishaws, let the owner of the Trishaw decide where you are going. There is a big chance you will visit the Clan Piers or Clan Jetties and their Floating Village. This is a complete village on stilts above the water where Chinese clans live. In the 19th century many Chinese immigrants came to Malaysia. To enlarge their chances clans were established, so together they could survive in their new environment.
The small villages are characterized by old traditions and habits, from candles outside the door to complete prayer temples inside the house. In total there are six of these villages, in every village lives one clan, and every village has their own temple. The houses are built of a special kind of wood, which makes them resistant to the influences of the seawater.
The clans used to live mainly of fishing, but since 2006 most inhabitants work in town. Tourists are welcome and are free to stroll about the wooden piers. The best time of the day to visit the Clan Jetties is in the early morning (around 7am). Penang Street art in Penang island Malaysia
These urban murals throughout the UNESCO-listed historic district depict life & culture in Penang.
The Street Art of George Town in Penang is one of the most attractive things of this UNESCO World Heritage Town. Penang street art gallery is beautified with a splash of colors on street side murals, captivating steel sculptures, wall painting and commercial art. In 2012, Municipal Corporation decided to create a plethora of art depicting the rich history of Penang's George Town on its streets. Filled with imaginations and vivid art along the Muntri Street, Weld Quay, Lebuh Leith, Armenian Street, Ah Quee Street, Penang Art Street Gallery is splashed with these beautiful artworks and caricatures just with bottles of spray paint in the hands of painters like Ernest Zacharevic, Baba Chuah, and many others.
Many eminent artists have contributed to the street art of George Town, including a famous local artist named Tang Mun Kian, who pitched the theme- 'Voices of People' which was a way of telling Penang's history through the wit of its locales. One artist whose artworks have overpowered the other is the London-trained Lithuanian artist, Ernest Zacharevic. His work led tourists to pose against the beautiful illustrations which were otherwise just plain bleak walls. Soon after photos of Geroge Town's street art were made popular on social media, an array of artists head to the streets of George Town to make their contributions too.

Chowrasta Market in Penang Island Malaysia
Chowrasta Market or Pasar Chowrasta is one of the two community markets in inner George Town. The marketplace is the usual watering hole for the local community, and it is usually positioned where major roads meet. In the case of Chowrasta Market, it is bordered by Penang Road, Chowrasta Road, Kuala Kangsar Road and Tamil Street.
Chowrasta Market is probably the most popular spot to get local titbits such as preserved nutmeg, tau33 sa3 pneah4 and other similar items. These used to be de rigueur on the shopping list of anybody, particularly ladies from other states, or their local counterparts before making a visit to their friends of other states. The stalls are still operating today, as before.
Chowrasta Market is the oldest market in George Town to still be functioning in the same spot. That area has always been a pekan, or village heart, when it was populated predominantly by various Indian ethnic groups. Originally an open air market, Chowrasta received its first proper structure when the George Town Municipal Council erected a market building here in 1890. That building is quite similar in appearance to the historic Sia Boey market building that is still standing today. The present market building was erected in the 1960s. It underwent a major facelift in 2012, which included adding a multi-story car park above the wet market area. This rear side makeover was completed in 2015, with full restoration was completed in January 2017.

Explore the Heritage Houses of George Town A UNESCO World Cultural City in Penang, Malaysia
The three things we enjoyed most about George Town — its street food, street art, and heritage houses — are coincidentally all kind of similar. They’re similar in the sense that they aren’t singular attractions. They’re spread out over a city so you can’t go to just one location to appreciate them.
As fascinating as George Town is, it doesn’t have any iconic landmarks. It doesn’t have a Sydney Opera House or a Golden Gate Bridge. Instead, what it has are many individual pieces like these heritage houses that collectively make George Town what it is — a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage City. Home to the largest collection of pre-war buildings in Southeast Asia, the city of George Town IS the attraction.
With all the heritage houses and street art to be discovered here, it almost feels like a giant labyrinthine playground. To fully appreciate it, you’ll need to explore it with a child’s curiosity and that’s exactly what we did. Here’s what we discovered.
The Heritage Houses of George Town, Penang
Without cars (or signs) it looks like you’re in a different time. This was taken on Muntri Street just a few steps from our hostel Ryokan Muntri. Muntri Street was home to rich Chinese tradesmen who favored an architectural style known as the “Straits eclectic-style”. I don’t know anything about architecture but the Straits eclectic-style is described as a fusion of Eastern and Western styles that was popular during a period of affluence in Penang.

Spinning candles at wat Wat Sao Thong Thong Koh Kret Thailand
Wat Sao Thong Tong, an ancient temple is located on Koh Kred Island. Originally, it was named 'Wat Mak' or 'Betel Palm temple'. However, all betel palms were cut down during the temple construction. Until in late King Rama IV reign, Chao Chom Manda Ampa, (King Rama II's concubine), accompanied by Krom Muen Pubaan, and Krom Khun Worachakri visited Wat Sao Thong Tong, and renovated the temple, which was in dilapidated condition. Since all the betel palms had been eliminated, they therefore bestowed the new name to the site as "Wat Sao Thong Tong". It has been called so until nowadays.
