Live from Paris on Saturday, July 8, as thousands of demonstrators take part in a march in memory of Adama Traore and against alleged police violence and discrimination. The death of the 24-year-old Black man in police custody in 2016 led to a series of riots and protests. French authorities have banned the annual march due to possible 'serious disturbances to the public order' caused by 'disturbing elements', following the violence of the past few weeks. A wave of demonstrations and riots was sparked by the shooting of a 17-year-old driver of Algerian descent, during a police traffic stop in Nanterre on June 27. 45,000 officers and armoured vehicles were deployed nationwide in an attempt to quell the unrest. According to media reports, over 3,600 protesters were detained, with over 23,000 fires lit, 12,000 cars burned and more than 2,000 incidents of damage on public buildings registered. Organisers of the rally have called for reforms to policing and the use of weapons. Over 90 trade unions, committees, associations and political parties have also demanded changes to the treatment of migrants and to the constitution. Traore’s death itself divided medical experts, with some blaming police restraint and other attributing it to an underlying health condition. Protesters gather in front of the Swedish Embassy in Baghdad on Friday, June 30 following the burning of a copy of the Quran by Swedish-based Iraqi activist Salwan Momika outside a mosque in Stockholm earlier this week. Footage filmed on Tuesday shows the aftermath of the shelling of an apartment block in the city of Kryvyi Rih. The Ukrainian authorities have claimed 11 people died and more than 20 were wounded after Russian missiles hit a building and a warehouse overnight. Russian Ministry of Defence stated that Russian forces launched strikes overnight against targets where AFU operational reserves were amassed, as well as ammunition and weapons depots. Moscow previously denied shelling civilian targets and areas. The strikes took place amid a Ukrainian counter-offensive using equipment provided by Western countries in an attempt to breach Russian defensive lines. Locals find shell fragments around schools in Belgorod Russia suburbs Local residents and schoolchildren in the Razumnoye village in Belgorod region collected shell fragments in various sizes near the secondary and music schools on Monday. Natalya Vaingolts, deputy principal of Razumnoye Secondary School No. 1, said she heard a loud noise on Monday afternoon. "Today, at about two o'clock in the afternoon, we heard a very loud sound and saw a terrible scene. Huge fragments began falling from the sky, [Damaging] the windows and the roof… It was very frightening. We have already collected all the fragments, you see how many of them we have collected. It's the whole box full of these fragments," she noted. In addition, Valentina Khludeeva, caretaker at the nearby A.V. Tarasov Children's Art School, showed the collected fragments. "We were not outside at that moment, but we heard how these fragments falling down on our roof," she said. On Thursday, June 1, Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Andriy Melnyk said in an interview that Kyiv 'does not have any responsibility' over groups fighting inside Russia. The 'Freedom of Russia Legion' claimed responsibility for the Belgorod attacks, reporting via its Telegram channel that since Friday, June 2, it had launched an assault together with the 'Russian Volunteer Corps' on the settlements in the Belgorod region, including the Shebekino and Graivoron districts. Moscow launched a military offensive in Ukraine in late February 2022 after recognizing the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR), claiming that Kyiv had failed to guarantee their special status under the 2014 Minsk Agreements, and urging Ukraine to declare itself officially neutral and give assurances that it would never join NATO. Kyiv denounced the Russian action as an invasion. Drone footage captured on Tuesday shows the aftermath of a reported explosion at Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant that threatens 80 settlements with floods. The images exhibit water spilling from Nova Kakhovka dam, while some buildings at the plant can be seen submerged. According to emergency services, half the span of the dam was reportedly destroyed after the explosion. Both the Russian and Ukrainian sides accused each other of being behind the destruction. The Russian Administration of the Nova Kakhovka district accused Kiev of launching Alder MLRS (RS-2) missiles attack at the station during the night, "the structure of the hydroelectric power station was partially destroyed, which subsequently led to the destruction of three of its spans under water pressure," they added. Ukraine's military accused Russian forces of 'blowing up' the dam, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said that the dam explosion 'only confirms for the whole world that they must be expelled from every corner of Ukrainian land'. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said that 'no immediate safety risk' was reported after the dam failure, adding that it would continue monitoring the situation closely. According to the Ukrainian governor of the Kherson region, Oleksandr Prokudin, about 16,000 residents were in the 'critical zone' on the Ukrainian-controlled right bank of the river. Head of Novaya Kakhovka Vladimir Leontiev from the Russian side also declared the evacuation of residents from the Russian-controlled left bank in the Kherson region has begun. The construction of the dam and its hydroelectric power station took place in 1956, establishing one of the largest energy facilities in USSR.
