Here's what Capetonians had to say about Jacob Zuma's release on remission of sentence
Former president Jacob Zuma will not serve any prison time, even though Correctional Services Commissioner Makgothi Thobakgale decided that former President Jacob Zuma be returned to the Estcourt Correctional Facility. Zuma reported to the Estcourt Correctional Facility on Friday morning, was “admitted” into the system, as according to Thobakgale’s decision. But, he was then released on remission of sentence granted by President Cyril Ramaphosa to low risk offenders. Thobakgale said Zuma arrived at the facility at 6am on Friday morning and was admitted to the system, followed by the administrative processes of the remission of sentence. A remission of sentence, this is where the President uses the powers vested on him by the constitution and the correctional services act to grant remissions which effectively means cutting the sentence short. Justice Minister Ronald Lamola said the decision was taken to address overcrowding in prisons. He said that this remission process started in April. “Upon admission into the system he was subjected to processes that qualify for the remission. He was then released,” Thobakgale said. Zuma was sentenced to 15 months imprisonment in 2021 on a charge of contempt of court after he failed to appear before the Zondo Commission. His incarceration sparked widespread unrest in KwaZulu-Natal and parts of Gauteng with businesses looted and torched and over 350 people killed. Two months following his incarceration, Zuma was released on medical parole by former national commissioner of DCS, Arthur Fraser. In July, the Constitutional Court dismissed an application by the Department of Correctional Services for leave to appeal a ruling by the Supreme Court of Appeal on whether or not Zuma should go back to jail. In the ruling, the court found that the appeal bore no reasonable prospect of success and dismissed the application with costs. On August 4, 2023, the Department of Correctional Services confirmed that it had received representations from relevant parties regarding Zuma’s incarceration. The next phase was for the national commissioner, Thobakgale, to consider every material received, the Judgment of the Supreme Court of Appeal and prescripts within the space of Corrections and to make his decision on or before August 10 that would be communicated publicly.

Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis seeks to portray taxi operators as villains, says Santaco
Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis seeks to portray taxi operators as villains, says Santaco
The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) on Friday said remarks by Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, asserting that the offer which has now been accepted by taxi operators after days of a violent taxi stay away was on the table even last week, are unfortunate and untrue.
“It is not a fair statement and it is also disappointing because it brings into question whether these negotiations and discussions were having, how authentic are they if such kind of statements can be made by the mayor,” Mandla Hermanus chairperson of Santaco Western Cape spoke to broadcaster Newzroom Afrika.
“That seeks to portray us as the villains.”
He said if the offer that has now been accepted by Santaco was the city’s proposal, there would not have been a need for the eight-day stay away.
IOL reported on Thursday that Santaco had called off the stay away by thousands of minibus taxi drivers.
The strike followed an impasse between the union and City of Cape Town over the clampdown by city officials against traffic offenders. Taxi operators had their vehicles impounded, with the city officials insisting they would only be released after operators paid the impoundment fee.
Commuters breathed a sigh of relief after days of chaotic scenes as thousands were stranded, and some had to walk long distances in the absence of taxi services.
On Thursday, Hermanus confirmed the news and said that they would “go back to the task team to finalise the issue they had not yet agreed on.”
Hermanus added that they were able to agree on the fundamental issues.
He also apologised to the public for all the distress and inconvenience that the stay away caused.
The announcement comes after Santaco made an about turn earlier on Thursday and agreed to meet with City of Cape Town officials to discuss issues around the impounding of its vehicles.
The call for a stay away by the taxi association escalated into violence and chaos on the city’s roads.
