Make your blanks any way you want.

A set of 3 chisels for use in plane making, but in sizes not found in my other set. Made from O1 tool steel, Maple handles & leftover door hardware. All the tools and planes I make become part of my collection.

I don't think wood bodied planes need irons with chip breakers. So, I have O1 tool steel on hand to make my own blades and I'm also buying it for everything else I make. This video is intended to be entertainment only.

Fitting a raw wedge blank into the body of the new plane, then using it and the blade to help complete the final tuning of the bed and the escapement. I also shape the bottom of the round plane. At around 14:45, after I trace the wedge template, you'll see me struggle for a while as I attempt to remove the wedge. The work you watched me do resulted in a wedge that fits so well, so tightly, that it is difficult to remove. This, my friends, will get you a plane that cuts smoothly, has no chatter in the cut and eliminates the need for tapered blades.

Cutting the large rabbit, cutting the escapement, boring and excavating the wedge pocket, fitting the wedge with the plane body and the blade all together. I also installed the refinished handle on the rip saw. Starting at 2:46:30 you'll see me make the final adjustments to the wedge pocket, set the wedge, then check one last time by holding everything up to the harsh light of the lamp. As the wedge was set, blow by hammer blow, you can hear the pitch change. This change in pitch is evidence of the massive amount of friction accumulated by the wedge. After I trace the wedge template, take a look at the time and effort it took to remove the wedge. Still think you need tapered blades?

This segment features saw & chisel work to shape the escapement, creating the opening for the wedge, then the start of tuning everything to receive the blade properly. The livestream of April 20th, 2022 shows the full, unedited footage of the same work done to the round plane and continues to include the fitting of the wedge, iron and plane body, all at once.
