After the cataclysmic events of the Resonance Cascade, Barney awakens from the elevator crash deep in the bowels of Sector G. He soon discovers that the entire facility has been rocked by interdimensional portal storms, which have brought in hostile and terrifying alien creatures. Making his way through the remnants of the facility, he is told by his surviving colleagues that the only way to safety is through the canals. Armed with nothing but his flashlight and sidearm, Calhoun sets out on his perilous journey to escape Black Mesa.

After a mishap at the tram station, Barney Calhoun arrives at Area 3 Security Facilities to begin his shift at Black Mesa, greeting (and pranking) many of his colleagues along the way. He dons his helmet, vest and sidearm before being assigned his first task of the day - helping scientists in Sector G restore function to an elevator. With the local trams out of service, he makes his way through the service tunnels of the rail system in order to reach his objective, witnessing many strange system crashes and failures along the way as a result of a highly unstable experiment in Sector C. After fixing the elevator, the entire facility is rocked by a Resonance Cascade in the Anomalous Materials lab, plunging Barney's elevator into chaos.

The time is 8:42a.m. Security officer Barney Calhoun boards a tram from the Topside Dormitories to begin a seemingly routine shift at the Black Mesa Research Facility, deep in the heart of the New Mexico Desert. Various unexpected system malfunctions cause delays in his ride, but Calhoun eventually makes it to his workplace at Sector C, where the science personnel seem anxious to start a highly anticipated experiment.
