A red extreme heart warning has been issued for the first time by the UK Met Office for parts of England, meaning a risk to life is likely as temperatures could hit 40C (104F). For the first time, the UN says, "systems have been put in place" to break allegations of a culture of fear at the organisation "head on". India is set to surpass China as having the world's largest population next year, according to figures released by the United Nations. The two countries currently both have more than 1.4 billion people, but China's birth rate is slower. The UN says by 2050, India will have 1.6 billion people, while China will have 1.3 billion.

US President Joe Biden has made a big change in his policy after meeting with Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on his tour of the Middle East. During his election campaign in 2019, President Biden vowed to make Saudi Arabia a "pariah" state. It came after the CIA concluded the crown prince had approved the brutal killing of the journalist Jamal Khashoggi inside the Istanbul consulate.
