Father shoots and kills daughter’s ex-boyfriend after he attempts to break into their home
OHIO — A father shot and killed his daughter’s ex-boyfriend after he broke into their home, according to video and reports.
The 22-year-old man was shot and killed after smashing through the front door of the Ohio home, while the homeowner stood armed on the other side, authorities said.
In a 911 call to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office at around 11am on Sunday, July 31, a woman said her ex-boyfriend tried to break into her home in Sidney.
The woman’s ex, James Douglas Rayl, started banging on the door of the home, and her father armed himself with a gun and ordered Rayl to go away, she told the sheriff’s office.
Video taken by a doorbell camera captured Rayl pounding away at the door.
Despite a warning from the woman’s father, Rayl started ramming the door with his shoulder, eventually busting it open and going inside.
The father fired three shots and Rayl backed out of the house, collapsing close to the garage.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Shelby County grand jury voted not to indict the homeowner who was involved in the July 31 fatal shooting.
According to a statement by Shelby County Prosecutor Tim Sell, “The grand jury voted 8-1 against indicting the homeowner involved in the shooting.”
Ohio has a “Stand Your Ground” law which allows citizens the right to use deadly force in self-defense.
