My favorite Bill Monroe story
This excerpt from a KET series hosted by Bill Anderson, with bluegrass consultant Ricky Skaggs, was part of a series of Bill Monroe anecdotes told by several of the notables present in the group. I wrote this one in an email, and some time later Doyle Lawson related it from memory. He got it or the gist of it sufficient to get a good laugh.

This banjo is a twin to it's FON brother, -88. Only the comment about SPBGMA does not apply to this one, which stayed home on that occasion.

Recording King R80 professional grade banjo (Gary Price)
This is one of the upper levels of Recording King Mastertone-based banjos, discontinued in 2015. From the back, it's
pretty much an RB-3 copy, but the front of the neck is based on prewar RK designs, which in this case is a pretty close copy
of the hearts and flower version used on the Style 6.

Gary H. Price Tradition Model five string banjo
This is the third Tradition model banjo built in March, 2007. The neck and resonator veneer are high grade Honduras mahogany, the rim a regular thickness Tony Pass block rim and the fingerboard of Brazilian rosewood most likely harvested before WWII. Tone ring is a 20 hole Price Classic. Tailpiece is the Price SL-5, nicely engraved with the make and model name and some decorative inlay outlines. The bridge was made by Gary Sosebee of Woodstock GA, I believe from the floor of an old cotton mill. Tuners are Five Star Planets with ivoroid buttons.

Gibson Mastertone RB-3 conversion FON 9489-88
Began as a 1929 40-hole arch top tenor banjo, has the early "fat boy" rim, nice straight flange with good plating, a 20 hole conversion tone ring, uncut rim and decal, properly made wings and bows RB-3 repro neck, aged Brazilian rosewood fingerboard, prewar Presto tailpiece, original Grover pancake tuners. It's a real pleasure to play this banjo, described as "special" at SPBGMA by a fine player.

Originally a 1926 ball bearing TB-3, has the MASTERTONE decal in the rim, ball bearing parts removed and the holes on rop of the rim plugged, rim turned for a "fat boy" one piece flange, and a Price tone ring fitted. Tuners are high grade Czech copies of prewar Grover pancakes, much super to the originals in fit and function.
