Indiana State Sanatorium walk through the property Part 2
Indiana State Sanatorium walk through the property Part 2
The Indiana State Sanatorium (1909-1968), also known as the "Indiana Tuberculosis Hospital", and formerly the Lee Alan Bryant Healthcare Facility (1978-2012), was a state-run institution designated for the treatment and care of Tuberculosis patients located in Rockville, Indiana. The facility was successful in its treatment of the disease, and the overall mortality rate decreased. The Sanatorium was shuttered in 1968 due to the low number of patients. In the mid-1970s, private investors proposed to convert the space into a nursing home. The facility now known as Lee Alan Bryant was opened in 1978, and gained a negative reputation due to understaffing which resulted the facility to be closed by the state in 2011. The property sat vacant for a decade before being purchased in December of 2020. The new owner hopes to reopen it as a mix-use facility.

Indiana State Sanatorium walk through the property
The towns of Laurel, Rockwell, Spencer, and Greencastle were in the final bid for the facility. After raising extra funds as an incentive, land 3 miles east of Rockville was chosen in 1908 as the site for the Indiana State Tuberculosis Hospital.
The Indiana State Tuberculosis Hospital was completed in the winter of 1910 and opened on April 1, 1911.
In 1919 the name of the Indiana State Tuberculosis Hospital was changed to Indiana State Sanatorium.
In March of 1922, a new superintendents building was planned for construction. In excavating an area for the foundation, several old furnaces were uncovered. Historical research by the local newspaper found that a distillery operated on the site in 1831 and was built possibly earlier than could be evidenced by record.
A new building to accommodate 100 male patients was completed on December 15, 1936. This building was connected to the original building by a heated tunnel. The basement of this building held supplies, storage, and contained suites for employees to stay.
In 1950, a large dedication service occurred in the chapel of the sanatorium while the 1960’s saw the construction of a nursing home building and several residences.
In 2012, the last patents were transferred from Indiana State Sanatorium (known by then as Lee Alan Bryant Healthcare Center). The buildings closed and the property was sold.
On December 31, 2020 the property was sold to the current owners.

Tennessee Wraith Chasers with BRANNON SMITH Ghost Hunt
Brannon is the younger brother of Chris and an aspiring physicist. Like Chris, Brannon was raised in a strict missionary Baptist upbringing and is a skeptic of the paranormal. A student of physics and engineering, Brannon approaches each investigation like an experiment with a hypothesis that needs proving. He looks for logical explanations for what might seem like a haunting and tries to label them using theoretical physics. Only after exploring every possibly scientific avenue will Brannon entertain the idea that something could be paranormal. To help collect evidence, he often challenges supernatural entities head-on to provoke a response and gather data using ghost-hunting gadgets.

The Tennessee Wraith Chasers with CHRIS SMITH Ghost Hunt
Chris became fascinated with hauntings at a young age after a frightening supernatural encounter. While in his grandfather’s barn, he came face to face with a “shadow person,” a shadow-like humanoid figure also known in some cultures as “wraiths” that are usually seen in peripheral vision. Since then, Chris has devoted his life to investigating paranormal activity and later won a spot on SyFy’s Ghost Hunters Academy to train under Steve Gonsalves and Dave Tango of “Ghost Hunters.” After returning home, Chris founded the Tennessee Wraith Chasers ghost-hunting team to investigate paranormal mysteries. Though a skeptic by nature, he’s receptive to the idea that spirits are among us but seeks hard evidence to prove it. Chris is a native of Gallatin, Tenn., where he was raised in a strict missionary Baptist household.

Tennessee Wraith Chasers with MIKE GONCALVES Ghost Hunt
The Tennessee Wraith Chasers (TWC) is a serious team of paranormal investigators that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Each investigation is packed full of Southern charm and wit, but when it comes down to business, TWC doesn’t mess around. TWC’s motto is respect, detect, collect, meaning they rely on a unique combination of scientific method and spiritual faith to navigate investigations. Growing up in a historic, and some say haunted, area of Tennessee has given the team an authentic desire to make sense of the mysterious things they’ve experienced through paranormal research. They take great pride in establishing trusted relationships with witnesses and call on the strengths of each team member to leave no stone unturned. The Wraith Chasers made their television debut as the stars of Destination America’s fan-favorite series “Ghost Asylum,” in which they investigated America’s most frightening asylums, sanitariums, penitentiaries and haunted hotspots.
MIKE GONCALVES
Mike, a musician, songwriter and producer, got his first taste of the paranormal working in the shadows of the show “Ghost Asylum,” and on several occasions experienced his own paranormal events while trudging through the darkness of America's most haunted locations. Mike has spent 15 years in the music industry touring the world and sharing the stage with some of rock’s most notable icons. It was his countless hours spent in recording studios with state-of-the-art technology that made him curious to see if this advanced audio visual equipment would help uncover evidence that the typical paranormal investigator was missing. As a Wraith Chaser, Mike brings his production expertise to the team, lending aid in the quest to uncover the unknown bumps in the night. Mike is a family man, animal lover and follower of Christ along with his fellow Wraith brothers. His charm and witty personality make him the most likely jokester of the team. But don’t let his wit fool you; Mike couldn’t be more serious when it comes to his investigation of the afterlife.

Chilling 'Body Chute' Of Waverly Hills Sanatorium
Chilling 'Body Chute' Of Waverly Hills Sanatorium
Tunnel
The tunnel served as a passageway to transport bodies and supplies in and out of the sanatorium. It was built on the first floor with the rest of the building. The corridor is 500 feet to the bottom of the hill and has a set of stairs on one side, which were the stairs used for the workers. On the other side, there was a cart that moved up and down the staircase which transported supplies and other necessities.
Since antibiotics did not exist in the time that the sanatorium was active, other forms of aid were used to treat TB patients. For example, heat lamps, fresh air, and positive talk and reassurance helped to keep patients alive, since the death rate of TB patients at the time was one death per day. However, at the peak of the disease, the sight of the dead being carried away in full view of the patients lowered the patient morale. Therefore, the sanatorium tried transporting the dead bodies as secretively as possible to increase the morale and lower the death rates, using the tunnel to that end. The doctors and workers of this time also believed that this would help to lower the disease's spreading rate.[14]
Hence, the tunnel was also known as the "Body Chute" or "Death Tunnel" by the locals and paranormal investigators visiting the sanatorium.
Apart from transporting dead bodies out of the sanatorium, the tunnel also served as a temporary air raid shelter during World War II.
