The state of Victoria, in the South Eastern most region of continental Australia, was home to a massive number of ultra-plinian volcanoes and supervolcanoes during the Devonian era. The state is divided in two, with the largest volcanic activity occurring during the early devonian at a site in Victoria where there was a rifting that was taking place. This rifting allowed magma from deep within the earth to rise up, and in doing so, this extremely hot basaltic magma melted the extremely volcanic bedrock basement of Victoria, turning the chemistry of the magma from a low silica mafic one, to an extremely viscous high silica blend, which led to the formation of over 2 dozen massive volcanic calderas in this region. After this we head to Cerro Galan to cover one of South America's own supervolcanoes before heading to the Yellowstone hotspot and covering the past 2 most recent supervolcanic eruptions that have occurred there.

The 1816 Year Without A Summer: A Volcanic Winter
The Year Without a Summer, brought on by the massive 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora in Indonesia, was characterized by a significant drop in global temperatures. This climatic anomaly led to widespread crop failures and food shortages in the Northern Hemisphere. The volcanic winter that ensued caused unseasonable weather, with reports of snowfall during the summer months in some regions, leading to famine and increased mortality. This period also stimulated scientific study into climate variability and inspired works in the arts, including Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein," which was conceived during this bleak time.

The Notorious 1815 Eruption of Mount Tambora
#tambora #indonesia #sumbawa
The 1815 eruption of Mount Tambora was one of the most powerful and destructive volcanic events in recorded history. Located on the island of Sumbawa in the Dutch East Indies (present-day Indonesia), Mount Tambora had been dormant for several centuries before it erupted in April 1815. This cataclysmic event reached a 7 on the Volcanic Explosivity Index, making it a super-colossal eruption.
The eruption was heard as far as 2,600 kilometers away, and it hurled ash and debris up to 43 kilometers into the atmosphere. The immediate effects were devastating, with a death toll estimated to be around 71,000 people, many of whom died from the ensuing famine and disease due to the destruction of agricultural production in the region. The volcanic ash spread across the world, affecting climate conditions globally.
The following year, 1816, became known as "the Year Without a Summer" due to the global cooling caused by volcanic ash in the atmosphere blocking sunlight. This led to widespread crop failures and food shortages in the Northern Hemisphere. The social impact of the eruption and the climate changes it induced were far-reaching, contributing to several historical events, including migration patterns in Europe and North America, the rise of the Cholera pandemic, and even inspiring literary works like Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein," which she wrote during the gloomy summer of 1816. The Tambora event remains a benchmark for the study of volcanic eruptions and their effects on climate and society.

The Volcano That Erupts Precious Gems
#volcano #diamonds #kimberlite #volcaniceruption #kimberlitepipe #volcanicpipe #volcaniceruptions #volcanoeruption #volcanology #geology #geological #geologicalhistory #geoscience #geosciences #earthscience #earthsciences #volcanoes #Kimberley #Southafrica #northerncape #diamond #diamondmine #mirmine #miningdiamonds
Diamonds are associated with a very strange and rare type of volcanic eruption. Volcanic pipes, aren't all that uncommon. What is, though, is the variant of them, which sources magma from close to 700km deep within the Earth. What this means, is this magma, passes through a transition zone known as the Diamond stability field. And as a result of this, it's able to bring diamonds up to the surface when it erupts.
But it's not only this that makes Kimberlite so strange. It's also the fact that the type of magma that kimberlite is comprised of, is known as ultra-mafic. Mafic magma, is known for being relatively non-explosive and more effusive in the way it erupts. This is because of the very low silica levels that Mafic magma inhabits. As you can probably imagine, ultra-mafic magma contains even less silica. Yet, it's able to explode up from depths of over 600 kilometers and surface in a matter of hours.
Kimberlite eruptions also have no magma chamber. They literally just push their way to the surface, at a tremendous speed, propelled forth by a strange chemistry from deep within the Earth, only to surface is an extremely explosive manner. Thankfully, these eruptions aren't anything close to what one would witness with a supervolcanic eruption. They don't affect the entire Earth, but if one happened near you... trust me, you'd know about it.

The Massive Super Volcano in Australia
#bushfire #wildfire #australia #grassfire #australian #bushfires #victoria #newsouthwales #queensland #westernaustralia #tasmania #southaustralia #fire #fires #bush #geology #geography #earthscience #climate #meteorology
Australia is known as the country of bush fires. Some of the forest fires that occur, especially on the eastern seaboard, are among the worst seen globally. And the worst part? They're a relatively common occurrence.
But it hasn't always been like this. Australia has experienced periods of climatic swings since its inception, but the bush fires and grass fires that it experiences every summer, have a specific reason for existing to the prolific degree that they do. And it's related to the location of present day Australia.
In this video we'll take a look at the past 15 million years of Australia since bushfires began to dominate and change the landscape of Australia, morphing it, and the forests, from the ancient dinosaur age ones that once existed, into the fire tolerant ones that now exist.
Thank you for watching! I hope you enjoy this video!

We primarily release videos that cover topics in the realm of Earth Sciences or natural disasters, but we also release the odd video here or there that delves into other sciences, or other topics altogether depending on how compelling we find the topic at hand.
Our videos are catered for anyone and everyone, and our goal is to attempt to explain hard to understand events in an easy to digest manner that isn't too "dry" in its presentation.
We strive to explain hard to understand scientific phenomenon in a way that isn't too boring, or hard to understand, so that people from all backgrounds can understand, learn, and appreciate this content and what we are discussing to a greater extent.
We release videos once per week at a minimum and we regularly engage with our community to keep them updated on all things OzGeographics!

How New Zealand Might Be Tearing Australia Apart
This is the perfect documentary compilation to understand how the continent-to-continent collision that occurred between Tasmania and Victoria 430 million years ago, the formation of Port Phillip Bay and the greater Melbourne region, the Volcanics of the You Yangs, and the creation of the Gippsland basin, the Tasman Sea, and, new zealand, yes, new zealand, all link together in one intricate dance of geological insanity.

The Massive Super Volcano in South America

Cerro Galan is one of the many supervolcanoes that dot our planet. 2 million years ago, it released a cataclysmic VEI 8 eruption. The scale of this event caused dramatic effects to both the local region, and to the Earth at large. As this event plunged the Earth into a long winded volcanic winter.
Cerro Galan is located in Argentina, and it's the largest post-miocene caldera to exist in the spectacular Andean mountain range. This massive cordillera system, was created as a result of the Nazca plate subducting beneath the South American tectonic plate, and the tremendous mountain range, and the major level of volcanism that exists was formed as a direct result of that. Cerro Galan is located in an area of the mountain called a back arc basin, which is the typica spot we see most subduction related supervolcanoes as a result of the rifting or stretching of the land that exists here.
Cerro Galan began life 15 million years ago, with it ramping up in intensity around 7 million years ago. It released 9 explosive eruptions, existing as composite volcanoes, that erupted at sub plinian, or plinian scale, and pyroclastic flows were a common theme as a result of the andesite to dacite magma chemistry that existed here at this time. After these 9 eruptions, Cerro Galan went dormant for several million years, only to roar back to life with the largest, and most explosive eruption ever released here, which caused the magma chamber to collapse in upon itself, forming the spectacular caldera that exists here in present day.
The wave of volcanic eruptions that occur in the Andes to this day has left behind massive calderas, and spectacular riches, in the form of valuable metals and gemstones.
