A bear catching salmon fish
The salmon run is the most interesting time to view bears in the wild. The annual migration sees thousands of mature adult fish aiming to journey from the ocean to the upper reaches of their native rivers.
The migration is a spectacle in itself, with fish battling against fierce currents and leaping out of the water to negotiate waterfalls and rapids.
The event presents a huge feeding opportunity for bears living upstream. Skilled predators, each spends several daylight hours in the water intercepting fish.

A wonderful view of a camel and a small camel
A camel is a large animal with a long neck and one or two humps on its back, and they're designed to survive in extreme desert conditions. These animals come in many shades of brown, from cream-colored to dark brown, and a camel can be over 7 feet tall at its hump!

Mother woodpecker feeds her chicks in the nest
The Pleated Woodpecker is one of the biggest, most striking forest birds on the continent. It’s nearly the size of a crow, black with bold white stripes down the neck and a flaming-red crest. Look (and listen) for Pleated Woodpeckers whacking at dead trees and fallen logs in search of their main prey, carpenter ants, leaving unique rectangular holes in the wood. The nest holes these birds make offer crucial shelter to many species including swifts, owls, ducks, bats, and pine martens.

A fight between two male kangaroo on the beach
A winner is decided when a kangaroo breaks off the fight and retreats. Winners are able to push their opponents backwards or down to the ground. They also seem to grasp their opponents when they break contact and push them away. The initiators of the fights are usually the winners. These fights may serve to establish dominance hierarchies among males, as winners of fights have been seen to displace their opponent from resting sites later in the day. Dominant males may also pull grass to intimidate subordinate ones.

Prothonotary Warbler Sounds
The male has a loud, far-carrying song of 4–14 high-pitched ringing notes, sometimes likened to shouting “tweet-tweet-tweet-tweet.” Each note is slightly upslurred and the series of notes increases in volume at the end. He frequently sings from elevated perches especially early in the morning, singing about 5–6 songs per minute. When close to the nest, his song is often softer; and when he’s with a female he sings a longer song that starts off fast and slows down at the end.

A fight between two black bears ends in peace
If a bear is seen in your town or neighborhood, leave it alone. In most situations, if left alone and given an avenue for escape, the bear will usually wander back into more secluded areas. Keep dogs under control. Stay away from the bear and advise others to do the same. Do not approach the bear so as to take a photo or video. Often a bear will climb a tree to avoid people. A crowd of bystanders will only stress the bear and also add the risk that the bear will be chased into traffic or the crowd of people.

Three little dogs playing ball
Sometimes human desired smaller dogs for practical reasons like wanting them to fit in small spaces where they could hunt rodents. Other times, they simply wanted a smaller dog that could fit comfortably in a lap. Regardless of the reason, humans have been specifically breeding smaller dogs with one another over time to achieve a desired combination of physical and temperamental traits.

A cat tries to catch a magpie, but ....
As you glance over at your cat lounging placidly in the late afternoon sun, you might not realize that a mighty hunter lurks just below that fluffy surface. Cats were born to hunt, although most domestic pet cats who live indoors rarely get to indulge that cat hunting instinct.

Boxing round between cat and dog
As funny as a cat standing up on his hind legs looks, the origin of the move is serious business. When cats feel threatened by a devious predator, they will often attempt to make themselves appear as large as possible. Perching up on the back legs is part of this survival tactic. In extreme cases, you might even see cats shuffling along sideways while in this upright position, which is another attempt to look as large and fearful as possible. Dog, do not mess with a cat on his hind legs!
The popular phrase 'fight like cat and dog' couldn't be further from the truth. This video reflects the commonly held belief that dogs and cats just can't get along because they are natural enemies. People who share their homes with both species know that this is not true. Dogs and cats can form fast friendships. It is life experiences with members of the other species, and not an inborn animosity, that determines how cats and dogs feel about each other.

Help the little ducks to jump behind his parents
As the last egg is laid, the female starts to incubate. She sits very tightly, and her brown plumage blends her perfectly to the background. She rarely leaves the nest apart from short breaks to feed and stretch her legs. About 28 days later the eggs hatch together. This takes about 24 hours.
The ducklings stay in the nest for at least 10 hours while they dry and get used to using their legs. Then, usually in the early morning, the female leads them to water. Bad weather may delay this exodus, but the sooner the ducklings get to water to feed, the better their chances of survival. They cannot survive without their mother, and take 50-60 days before they fledge and become independent. The nest is abandoned, although if it is close to the feeding area, the family may continue to use it for brooding and roosting.

A small polar bear plays with its mother
Polar bears are the largest carnivorous land mammals on Earth. They are about seven to eight feet long, measured from the nose to the tip of their very short tail. Male polar bears are much larger than the females. A large male can weigh more than 1,700 pounds, while a large female is about half that size (up to 1,000 pounds). Bears can weigh about 50 percent more after a successful hunting season than they do at the start of the next; most of this additional weight is accumulated fat. A newborn polar bear weighs only about 1.5 pounds.

Beautiful Timelapse of the Night Sky with Reflections in a Lake
When you observe the night sky with your eyes, you can see the Moon, perhaps several planets, and many stars. If you are in a particularly dark location and if the moonlight is not too bright, you may also see a faint band of light that stretches from horizon to horizon. This pale, white glow has been called the Milky Way for centuries. The word “Galaxy” actually means Milky Way. If you look galaxy up in the dictionary, you will find that the root of this word comes from the Greek and Latin words for milk. I often like to ask students if they know the scientific name for the sugar in milk -- most have heard of lactose, but fewer have heard of galactose. If someone comes up with galactose, though, I try to make the connection between that sugar and our name for the structure in space in which we live.

Lovebirds are capable of melting even the hardest hearts, even their name melts your heart. These softly-looking birds are known because of their short tails. They are named this because they are often seen snuggling up together on the perch. Even they appear in a number of color combinations, the most common lovebird is the peach-faced one.

Sea turtles journey between land and sea and swim.
Seven different species of sea (or marine) turtles grace our ocean waters, from the shallow seagrass beds of the Indian Ocean, to the colorful reefs of the Coral Triangle and the sandy beaches of the Eastern Pacific. While these highly migratory species periodically come ashore to either bask or nest, sea turtles spend the bulk of their lives in the ocean. WWF's work on sea turtles focuses on five of those species: green, hawksbill, loggerhead, leatherback, and olive ridley

Underwater video loop of a school of fish
Collective behavior is embodied in schools of fish. In each of these cases, individuals move through their environment and respond to threats and opportunities almost simultaneously, forming an undulating enclave that seems to operate as a single entity. Such coordinated movement requires the rapid and efficient transfer of information among individuals, but understanding exactly how this information spreads through the group has long eluded scientists. Studying this behavior in schools of fish has been incredibly challenging, because the cues that drive it occur at lightning speed, come from multiple directions and sources, and of course because all of it takes place underwater.
