Therapy season. Riding some of the sandy trails out in Rio Rancho New Mexico. There is a very thin crust of hard pack that has developed over time on this particular trail. Less than a quarter inch thick. Fat bikes are key to keeping from plowing and pizza cutting through that thin crust. This helps to minimize rutting that can lead to erosion in these candy soils. The soils have the consistency of dune sand in most of this area. Smoke from distant forrest fires make for some interesting lighting Mariposa fat bike trails. Out on the mountain bikes after a massive hail storm came through. The desert is so dry it soaked up the moisture within a day.

Beautiful views overlooking White Mesa and Red Mesa. If you keep going you can ride all the way to Red Mesa.

Got a fat bike? Come check out Mariposa Fat Bike Trails. Lots of trails and miles and miles of sandy arroyos to explore. Trailforks App is a good tool. Trails are directional. Extreme desert conditions exist in this area so be self sufficient. Keep in mind when you think it can’t get any sandier, IT Will get sandier and deeper. 4.5 or wider tires highly recommended. Respect the signage. Leave no trace. And tread lightly. We are experiencing a very bad drought and it’s like dry beach sand out in the badlands. Dune sand is another good way to describe the sand in the badlands.

A small segment of this arroyo that goes for miles. Don’t be fooled. Fat bikes can make it look easy. They just float over the soft sand. It only gets sandier and softer the farther down you go.
