As I was helping my parents to clean out their old house I found a 1996 Smithsonian Crystal Growing Kit in my closet and it still had a couple of packets left from when I was a kid! So I'm going to grow these crystals for your amusement and then show you how you can grow your own with some items you may already have, or can get, for just a few dollars. This is a great experiment to do with your children to show them how many of our every day items have to mined. And how crystals can grow!

What Factors Determine Mineral Prices?
This video is all about the little things that might help a gem and mineral collector to justify paying high prices for a world class specimen. Gems, minerals, crystals, and fossils all have tremendous factors that determine prices. Let's talk about that!

EXPLAINED: What is the Difference Between Agate, Jasper, Chalcedony, and Chert?
Agate, jasper, chalcedony, and chert are all varieties of micro-crystalline quartz. Quartz is the crystal form of silicon dioxide. However each of these minerals are scientifically a little different...but also sometimes the same! We'll discuss those differences and more today! We'll also discuss what causes fluorescence (a phenomenon that can happen with some of these minerals) as well!

Can You Tell What Is In A Geode Before Opening It?
Can you tell what type of crystal or color will be inside of a geode before opening it? Unfortunately not! You will not be able to tell what crystals are inside of a geode until it's opened. You can make an educated guess based on locality and some context clues. For instance if I see a Las Trancas geode I can pretty well expect blue chalcedony and quartz of various varieties HOWEVER I have cracked exactly two pink quartz geodes from there. So...

Cracking This Las Trancas Geode Will Knock Your Socks Off!
This is a Las Trancas Geode and you can find several sizes on the website in my channel bio! Sometimes they have sparkly crystals like this. Sometimes they have dainty, weird crystals! But you'll probably enjoy the experience! Geodes are fun! By the way this one is highly fluorescent under a long wave ultraviolet light (365nm). This particular geode has dainty little quartz growths that are coatings a beautiful blue chalcedony.

Examining A Gem, Mineral, Crystal, and Fossil Collection 50 Years In The Making!
This is a re-upload and fixed version of a video I did a few weeks ago after being allowed access to a gem, mineral, fossil, and crystal collection that started being put together over 50 years ago! None of these pieces are available, like I said, private collection. However a mislabeled fossil was pointed out to me and I felt the need to take down the video and fix it. While I was at it, I decided to redo the text graphics as well as track down the scientific names for some of the fossils that had been left a little ambiguous. I hope that you enjoy seeing wonderful amethyst crystals, fluorite you simply won't find anymore, aquamarine, amazonite and more!

Bismuth is an element bearing number 83 on the periodic table of elements. It's widely believed to be a transitional metal and bismuth is WONDERFUL. It has a tremendous amount of industrial applications due to it's stability, low melting point, low conductivity, and low toxicity. You can also grow really cool crystals from it. So let's talk about why you don't see natural bismuth crystals very many places, and how people make the crystals you do see.

Really Old Water Pulled From a Rock (geode) Under a Microscope!
About a year ago I cracked open a geode with water inside. People lost their minds! I eventually cracked two others and had the water put under a microscope. Here are most of the slides from that. The water is filled with a variety of silica minerals (mostly quartz), some calcite, and some iron oxide and hydroxide minerals. The slides are under various magnifications as well as various lenses and lighting (lots of polarized lighting shots). Regardless, these were just so much fun and I just wanted to share them somewhere! Anyway if you are interested in more you can find me at http://mooneyfinemineral.com - or at pretty much any other social media platform!

Snow White Missouri Barite Specimen
An interesting Barium Sulfate crystal cluster that is snow white and was mined in Washington County, Missouri. Barite has tremendous industrial applications! It's used in oil exploration for it's high specific gravity (it's poured onto oil spouts or broken pipes to add some GIRTH to the oil and keep it from spraying everywhere). Barite is also used to make the barium drinks used before colonoscopies. Slightly less fun than oil spouts. Allegedly.

Classic Amethyst and Citrine Specimen
A classic Chihuahua state of Mexico crystal specimen. Probably mined in the early 1990s. Amethyst and Citrine are only delineated by their color. They are both silica dioxide crystals. The only difference is that Amethyst is purple and Citrine is yellow. Both gain their color from iron inclusions in the crystal structure. When they are both on the same specimen it usually comes from differing oxidation levels of the iron in the individual crystals!

Amethyst, Calcite, and Minor Citrine
This fun little multi-mineral specimen hails from the classic Chihuahua state of Mexico. The only difference between Amethyst and Citrine is the color. Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz and Citrine is the yellow/orange by definition!

Flowing Chalcedony from Mexico
This beautiful chalcedony hails from the classic Naica Mexico mining district. This piece could be considered agate as Chalcedony is delineated into two main categories: Agates and Jaspers. Agate being the more translucent Chalcedony and Jasper being the Opaque form.
