Finishing an Epic Battle of Gettysburg Oil Painting 154th New York of Coster’s Brigade Part 2
In this video, I am finishing up work on a large 48in x 24in Civil War oil painting I started before I had a Youtube Channel, on the 154th New York Infantry (The Hardtack Regiment) of Charles R. Coster’s Brigade of Adolf von Steinwehr’s Division of the Union Army’s 11th Corps, during their brief, but bloody action at the Kuhn’s Brickyard on the afternoon of July 1, 1863 during the battle of Gettysburg. Known more famously as “the Brickyard fight:” the decisive action by Coster to place his brigade on this ground, proved to be a vital factor in slowing down the late afternoon Confederate assault, and bought precious time for the other Union brigades of the 1st and 11th Corps to escape to Cemetery Hill. In this video, I will be focusing mainly on finishing up the small details on the long arms, equipment, uniforms and flags.

Painting a Chicago Zouave in Acrylic Gouache
Here is a reconstruction of a Chicago Zouave that were part of Colonel Elmer E. Ellsworth’s United States Zouave Cadets in 1860. It was this uniform that went on tour in the United States during the years just prior to the civil war, that caused the “zouave craze” and would go on to heavily influence American military dress during that period. Many early war militia regiment as well as some volunteer infantry would outfit companies or their entire unit in this flashy and colorful new style of uniform that were inspired by uniforms that were in vogue in France and Europe during the mid 19th Century. The 19th Illinois Infantry (known as the 2nd Chicago Zouaves) would adopt uniforms of almost identical design to that which is shown here with a few minor differences.

Painting a soldier uniform study of Colonel Elmer E. Ellsworth in Acrylic Gouache
In this video Historical Artist Mark Maritato works on a military uniform study painting of Civil War Colonel Elmer Ephram Ellsworth. Ellsworth was the commander of the 11th New York Fire Zouaves who was killed in may of 1861 while attempting to remove a large rebel flag from the roof of the Marshall House Inn, located in Alexandria, Virginia. Ellsworth was a close friend to Abraham Lincoln and his death during the early days of the war would inspire pro-Union fervor in the North to avenge his death. This soldier uniform study is a reconstruction based on historical research of Ellsworth’s uniform, equipment and appearance on the day he was killed. The painting is done in Acrylic Gouache (Also known as Acryla-Gouache) on Bristol.
