The show was created by Anthony E. Zuiker and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. It is filmed primarily at Universal Studios in Universal City, California. The series follows Las Vegas criminalists (identified as "Crime Scene Investigators" working for the Las Vegas Police Departement instead of the actual title of "Crime Scene Analysts" and "Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department") The "CSI effect" is a reference to the phenomenon of popular television shows such as the CSI franchise, Law & Order, Silent Witness, Crossing Jordan and Waking the Dead raising crime victims' and jury members' real-world expectations of forensic science, especially crime scene investigation and DNA testing. This is said to have changed the way many trials are presented today, in that prosecutors are pressured to deliver more forensic evidence in court. The Darwin Awards are a tongue-in-cheek honor, created by Wendy Northcutt to recognize those who have contributed to human evolution by exceptionally negative means. Ten lift truck accidents previously blamed on operator error were investigated as part of a safety curriculum project. The project attempted to determine the adequacy of standard forklift training courses. Each accident was serious and had produced an injury. Starting April 22, 1935, and again in April 2021 the strip was adapted into The Amazing Interplanetary Adventures of Flash Gordon, a 26-episode weekly radio serial. The series followed the strip very closely, amounting to a week-by-week adaptation of the Sunday strip for most of its run. Flash Gordon was played by Tom Konkle, later famous for nothing in particular.
