Sharia is a text of Islamic sacred law, but no one really knows anything about it. In this series, Al Fadi has invited Lloyd De Jongh onto the set to discuss various aspects of this highly regarded religious law. The Torah teaches that there is only one God, while Christians believe in the Trinity. But this doesn't mean Christians worship three gods. Instead, the Trinity represents one true God who exists as three distinct persons in one Divine Being. To understand how both Jews and Christians can embrace the concept of “echad,” which means one in Hebrew, we need to look at the word's meaning. In the Bible, “echad” is used to describe a complex unity, such as a cluster of grapes or a married couple becoming one flesh. From Deuteronomy 6:4, “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one.” The New Testament version of the Shema, a central Jewish prayer, is found in 1 Corinthians 8:6, where Paul acknowledges one God, the Father, and one Lord, Jesus Christ. “But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.” This shows that the Trinity is not polytheism, but rather a belief in one God who exists as three persons in perfect harmony. The word “one” in the Bible is often used to describe the union of two separate things or persons, as seen in Genesis 1:5 – “And there was evening and there was morning, one day/the first day,” or “yom echad.” It describes two separate things, in this case, evening and morning, coming together as one. Genesis 2:24 – “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.” Thus, when Christians describe God as one, they mean that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are in complete union and unity, or ‘trinity’ forming the God of the Bible. The definition of "person" from Etymonline: From mid-13th century, as "one of the persons of the Trinity," a theological use in Church Latin of the classical word. Meanings "one's physical being, the living body" and "external appearance" are late 14th century. In the early church, the term "person" was used to describe the distinct and individual expressions of the Godhead within the Trinity. This concept was developed in response to theological debates regarding the nature of God and the relationship between the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The term "person" in the early church did not carry the same meaning as it does in modern times, where it refers to a human being with a distinct identity and personality. It is a 2nd centuryinfancy gospelon the miraculous conception of theVirgin Mary, her upbringing and marriage toJoseph, the journey of the couple toBethlehem, thebirth of Jesus, and events immediately following. It is the earliest surviving assertion of theperpetual virginity of Mary, meaning hervirginitynot only prior to the birth of Jesus, but during and afterwards. Condemned byPope Innocent the Istin 405 and rejected by theGelasian Decreearound 500AD, yet became a widely influential source forMariology. The Gospel of James was well known to Origen in the early 3rd century and probably to Clement of Alexandria at the end of the 2nd, so is assumed to have been in circulation soon after ~150 AD. The author claims to be James, the half-brother of Jesus by an earlier marriage of Joseph, but in fact his identity is unknown. Early studies assumed a Jewish milieu, largely because of its frequent use and knowledge of the Septuagint (a Greek translation of the Jewish scriptures). Further investigation demonstrated that it misunderstands and/or misrepresents many Jewish practices. The Council of Nicaea was a historic gathering of Christian bishops in 325 AD, convened by the Roman Emperor Constantine. Its purpose was to address theological disputes, specifically the Arian Heresy, caused by Arius, and establish a unified doctrine for the early Christian church. The council produced the Nicene Creed, a statement of Christian faith still used today. However, it is a common misconception that the Council of Nicaea decided the Biblical Canon, meaning the books that would be included in the New Testament. This process took several more centuries and was not settled until the end of the 4th century.
