New York, 9 March, 1949 takes us back in time to the vibrant streets of New York City's East Side, capturing the essence of a bygone era. Filmed by the US Army Signal Corps, this short film offers a unique perspective on daily life in 1949.
The camera pans low, revealing bustling streets with men and women strolling by, their attire and demeanour evoking the distinctive style of the time. As we traverse Rivington and Orchard Streets, we encounter a pickle and herring stand, where several women engage in lively commerce, emblematic of the neighbourhood's rich cultural tapestry.
From a higher vantage point, we observe another street, its narrow expanse dotted with pushcarts nestled between parked cars—a vivid tableau of urban vitality. A signpost announces "Delancey Street," a testament to the enduring legacy of the city's iconic neighbourhoods. The side walks are a dance of pedestrians and parked cars, painting a vivid portrait of the city's ceaseless motion.
Our lens ascends further, capturing Orchard Street in all its glory. A throng of people clusters around a merchant, his store front adorned with an array of enticing dry goods, a snapshot of a time when local businesses thrived at the heart of community life.
The presence of the US Army Signal Corps in New York in 1949 can be attributed to various factors. In the post-World War II period, the city was undergoing significant transformations, both economically and socially. The US Army Signal Corps was tasked with documenting and preserving moments of historical significance and New York, as the nation's cultural and financial epicentre, held immense importance.
The city's dynamic atmosphere and diverse populace offered a rich tapestry for visual storytelling, making it a prime subject for their lens. Through their meticulous documentation, we're granted a captivating glimpse into a pivotal year in New York's history.

London Soho, 1956. AI Enhanced. Full Colour Documentary, Details Recovered 1080 HD
Experience the vibrant atmosphere of 1950s Soho in this colorful time capsule, which captures a typical day during the annual Summer Fair. The film takes viewers on a nostalgic journey through this cherished bohemian enclave in central London, showcasing its multicultural community and bustling energy. Soho was once home to Italian delis, French patisseries, and Greek-Cypriot cafes, as well as jazz bars like the Granada and market traders selling exotic foods like aubergines.
The parade features models from the "Visual Arts Club," while waiters from local restaurants compete in a race through the streets, still bearing the scars of wartime bomb damage. The film also provides a stark contrast to the area's current state of commercialism and gentrification, which has dulled its once-vibrant character. As such, the film is not only a cherished relic of the past but also a call to action for 21st-century activists.
The original image noise has been removed, and the tone has been balanced, while color saturation has been reduced where necessary. The footage has also been stabilized, and details recovered, sharpened, brightened, and finally upscaled from the original 786 x 576 to full 1080 HD. The original sound was weak and high-pitched, lacking bottom end, which has been corrected.
At 30 minutes, this is the longest conversion yet, with the AI processing alone taking around 5 hours. More to come!

London Pre D-Day, 1944. AI Enhanced. Full Colour Documentary With Sound. Details RecoveredHD
According to sources, the footage of London in 1944 features narration from newsreel cameraman Jack Lieb, whose son Warren recorded his voice in one of his final lectures in 1976. During his 1943 trip to Europe, Lieb used a 35mm black and white camera to capture war coverage for Hearst’s News of the Day newsreels and a 16mm home movie camera to record color footage for his family. After the war, he edited the color footage into a film that he personally narrated during his lectures, which ranged from venues such as the National Geographic Society in Washington, D.C. to his daughter's fourth-grade class in Chicago.
The film has been balanced to reduce extreme white and black areas and show more detail, and the color saturation has been decreased slightly for a more realistic image. Camera movement has been stabilized where possible, and the film has been sharpened, with details recovered, noise removed, and upscaled to HD. The color in the film is original and not generated by AI.

Leeds, Boar Lane, 1898. AI Enhanced. BW. Detail Recovered, Grain Removed, Sound, Upscaled 1080 HD
Back in 1898, the Riley Brothers from Bradford captured a delightful street scene of Leeds that showcases a bustling Boar Lane complete with electric trams, horse-drawn carriages, and plenty of pedestrians. A police officer even poses for the camera, and keep an eye out for the steam-powered tram - a rarity for its time.
The Warwick Trading Company catalogue from the same year lauded this street scene as one of the finest available. The Brothers also filmed a street scene in their hometown of Bradford, which, while of local interest, was not as impressive as the Leeds footage.
Unfortunately, the original film suffered from poor sound quality, scratches, and other damage, which are still noticeable in the upscaled version. For now, manual editing is the only way to correct these issues until AI technology advances further. I increased the frame rate from 18 to 30 to enhance the smoothness of the film's action. Despite these challenges, enough detail has been recovered to bring this charming scene to life in the 21st century.

Edinburgh, 1934. AI Enhanced. BW. Restored, Sharpened & Upscaled to 1080 HD
Marion Grierson's film, "Edinburgh: The Capital Of Scotland," runs for almost 10 minutes and highlights the various tourist attractions that Edinburgh has to offer. Grierson was the head of the film unit for the Travel and Industrial Development Association (TIDA). The film captures the beauty of the city with its busy streets, peaceful parks, and iconic landmarks, including different modes of transportation.
Despite having less recognition than her brother, John, who was a prominent figure in British documentary filmmaking, and her sister Ruby, who passed away too soon, Marion Grierson's career in documentary filmmaking was remarkable. Her distinct style combined advanced techniques with a light and confident touch. Although her films were more popular outside of the UK, they provide a valuable historical record of British life. Most of her work was produced during the 1930s, which was the peak of the British documentary movement. Despite their importance, Grierson's films are not well-known today.
